  • Motorola named by AT&T as outstanding supplier, highlights strength in teamwork

Now this is just sad. Motorola doesn't seem to be doing anything more productive with its time than cutting jobs and publicizing a rather pathetic commendation from AT&T. Apparently, Motorola has been named, by AT&T, as an "Outstanding Supplier," among 27 other companies, in "the area of teamwork." Had Motorola been named "Most Innovative," "Best in [...]
  • Microsoft launches System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 - pushing mobile enterprise mobile to the edge

So, we’re here at CTIA San Francisco 2007 and the first thing on our agenda was the Microsoft launch luncheon (try saying that three times, fast). Here’s what they’ve got planned… In keeping with the Microsoft’s expertise in enterprise mobile solutions, Microsoft has launched their first “dedicated mobile device management server” - Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. And, to help roll-out device compatibility with the Mobile Device Manager, Microsoft has teamed up with AT&T and Sprint to bring Microsoft has keyed in on the business customer’s needs beyond the realm of simple email, contact management, and calendar sync-ing. They’re leveraging the Windows Mobile platform to bring a new level of integration and user-level management to the enterprise IT professional. With features like over-the-air application delivery and secure VPN connectivity, the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 aims to ensure that fleet-management of Windows Mobile devices maintains “end-to-end data integrity” as well as providing secure access to corporate data - in other words, Windows Mobile device fleets can all be updated and synchronized with ease and allow user-corporate VPN connection under the watchful eye of the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Center 2008. IT heads will be happy to hear that the new Mobile Device Center will employ an “always on” connection - affording them the control they need to maintain and ensure fleet integrity. Should the “always on” connection drop-out, Microsoft’s “fast reconnect” technology gets the user securely back online without having to re-authenticate. And, if the IT department sees a problem with any device in their fleet, System Center Mobile Device Manager provides the IT Administrator with the power to lock down a specific handset - they can disable Bluetooth, SMS/MMS, WLAN (WiFi), InfraRed, POP/IMAP...

  • AT&T goes live with Motorola RAZR2 V9 - now available on AT&T website

With Big Red and Sprint already having launched their own versions of the Motorola RAZR2 V9 , it’s about time AT&T got with the program. The AT&T-branded MOTORAZR2 V9 is actually ahead of schedule (early September) and looks to be going for $299.99 (after a $450 web discount). Nope, that wasn’t a mistake. This little “mahogany” (we’d call it “purple” but hey, who are we to correct AT&T) RAZR2 V9 touts a retail, out-of-contract price tag of $750! The MOTORAZR2 V9 is only available online to business premier customers, but should become available to all web-customers as well as in-store customers very soon. That $750 price tag had better be a joke. But, we have a sneaking suspicion that it’s entirely legit. • Mysterious Motorola Q's waiting in the wings?

Aside from the features of the Motorola Q9m and Q9h, Motorola’s newly launched Moto Q9 promotional website hints at a couple unannounced Moto Q’s waiting in the wings - literally. Flanking either side of the center-staged Motorola Q9m and Motorola Q9h are two blacked-out silhouettes of what we presume are Motorola Q variants. With the Moto Q9m destined for Verizon (expected August 20 ) as a multimedia-centric Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphone, and the Moto Q9h headed to AT&T (look for an August 24 launch) as an HSDPA 3G variant of the WM6 handset, we can’t imagine what Motorola is hiding - GPS and WiFi? Now that would be cool. • ChangeWave survey shows just how much Apple iPhone is changing the US wireless industry

We all know the iPhone is doing well. Almost everyone we talk to is incredibly pleased with their newly acquired gadget (we have heard complaints, but the pros seems to greatly outweigh the cons). So, it’s not really surprising to hear that the iPhone is changing the wireless game in the US. ChangeWave conducted a survey of 3,003 ChangeWave Alliance members to gauge just how well the iPhone was doing. The results are encouraging, if a little expected. The iPhone is popping up on the market-share-meter with a full 1% of the wireless market. But, and this is where it gets really interesting, when the respondents were asked about their mobile phone purchases in the coming six months, 16% said they’d plunk down the necessary coin for an iPhone. That’s 16% of the wireless market - “catapulting Apple ahead of all other manufacturers.” In comparison, planned purchases of Motorola handsets declined to 14% (from 33% in October 2006). Future planned BlackBerry purchases were up to 13% (from 10%). And, corroborating “street reports” of iPhone satisfaction, ChangeWave found that an astounding 77% of iPhone owners were “Very Satisfied.” Research In Motion’s BlackBerry garnered a “Very Satisfied” rating from 50% of owners. However, Motorola (36%), Palm (34%), and SonyEricsson (29%) owners didn’t hold their handsets in as high regard. Another interesting finding shows that, since the iPhone’s release, 30% of ChangeWave Alliance members planned to switch to AT&T as their wireless carrier (up from 28%). In contrast, only 19% indicated that they would switch to Verizon (down from 22%), continuing the down-ward trend for the third consecutive survey. It should be noted that ChangeWave is pegging AT&T’s market share at 28% (up from 27%), with Verizon’s market share at 29% (down from 30%). “There’s no doubt about it, consumers are embracing the iPhone. And judging by the numbers...
