  • RIM's BlackBerry 8700 finally hitting China - Chinese businessmen rejoice

Following on the recent announcement from RIM that China’s government gave the green-light to bring the outdated BlackBerry 8700 to the Chinese masses, China Mobile has announced that they will be launching the BlackBerry 8700 by month’s end. TCL Communications, the Chinese manufacturer of RIM’s BlackBerry 8700 said that they’ve gotten an order for 10,000 BlackBerry 8700 handsets from China Mobile, which will be sold under the “Alcatel BlackBerry 8700″ branding. TCL owns the Alcatel brand and helped RIM push certification of the BlackBerry 8700 through the Chinese beauracracy. The Alcatel BlackBerry 8700 will presumably be used with China Mobile’s existing BlackBerry wireless plans (available for BlackBerry handsets from abroad). There are two plans offered by China Mobile - one costs RMB 398 ($53.8) per month and the other will run RMB 598 ($80.8) per month. We’re sure Chinese businessmen will be happy to hear that they can now get an official BlackBerry 8700 from China Mobile. You know, instead of the more advanced BlackBerry handsets that could just as easily be brought in from, say, the US. • Google announces new 'My Location' service for Google Maps Mobile - find yourself without GPS

Maps are great if you know exactly where you’re currently located, but what good are they when you’re completely lost? Navizon is a great solution to help locate your approximate position based on cell-tower signal triangulation (we’ve been using on our iPhones with great results for some time now), and now Google is treading all over their turf. With Google’s announcement of their new “My Location” service on compatible phones with Google Maps for Mobile marks the launch of a public test of the new faux-GPS position location feature. Google says they’ve compiled a database of cell-tower locations through previous Google Maps users, and has employed some “algorithms” (we call them “triangulation equations”) to quickly give Google Maps for Mobile users a fairly accurate lock of their current position. By simply pressing ‘0′ on your keypad, the service can pinpoint locations to within several meters in optimal condition - presumably with at least three cell-towers in range. The “My Location” service is available for free to anyone with Google Maps for Mobile and a compatible cellphone - its in open beta testing, but is available to most BlackBerry, S60, and Windows Mobile users. Users with integrated GPS receivers can use the new “My Location” service for Google Maps Mobile to complement their satellite position-fix when buildings or mountains obscure the line-of-sight required for a GPS signal-lock. Head on over to Google’s download page to find out if your phone is compatible with the upgrade. • RIM CEO: Apple and Microsoft who?

Talk about talking smack. Mike Lazaridis, CEO of RIM (Research In Motion), makers of the addictive CrackBerry handsets, is being quoted as saying that the iPhone is no threat to the BlackBerry lineup. He suggested that people “try typing a web key on a touchscreen on an Apple iPhone, that’s a real challenge. You cannot see what you type” - directly taking a stab at the iPhone’s lack of a hard-keyboard. “The Apple iPhone has severe limitations when it comes to effortless typing. Of course you have more screen space, with more artistic interactions, but that’s not enough. We’ve seen this before when Palm tried virtual keyboards. When they launched the Treo they licensed our keyboard,” Lazaridis said. RIM’s co-CEO Jim Balsillie also mentioned that the Microsoft Windows Mobile platform poses no real threat to the BlackBerry lineup. He was quoted as saying that, “Windows Mobile isn’t that big a competitor…They are a modest force to RIM. Microsoft should be working at services, not at distributed PCs, which is what Windows Mobile actually still is.” Sounds to us like RIM is shaking in their boots and playing tough. We have a feeling that their boardroom convo’s are skewed towards topics about what to do about the looming threat of Apple’s UI-appeal and Microsoft’s new Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 - which takes aim at RIM’s BES server technology. RIM is something of a one-trick pony with their push-email and corporate syncing prowess, and with Microsoft breathing down their necks, they’ve got to be just a little worried. So, how do you show investors that you’re company is still in a strong, leveraged position? Lie and front like you’re good to go. Good luck with that strategy, RIM.
