  • Qualcomm's 2007 MediaFLO finances show greater losses

The ugly-duckling of Mobile TV standards definitely didn’t get off to a good start in 2007. MediaFLO, wholly owned by lawsuit-loving Qualcomm, has shown that 2007 wasn’t a great year for profits. MediaFlo’s 2007 statement-filing with the SEC details yet another year of red-ink. Qualcomm’s Mobile TV initiative has posted losses of $240 million for 2007. That’s means Qualcomm lost $118 million more than last year, on this whole “Mobile TV” deal. And, Qualcomm is blaming its QSI (Qualcomm Strategic Initiative) arm’s lackluster financial performance on MediaFLO’s losses. Apparently, MediaFLO took a $70 million hit on its Verizon Wireless-launch last year and the company’s expected launch on AT&T may just widen the gap between profits and losses. Let’s hope Qualcomm’s headed for “greener” pastures with MediaFLO’s 2008 performance. • Samsung A827 "Access" to bring up AT&T's lower-end MediaFLO TV lineup

It looks like AT&T is going to be offering a MediaFLO TV -compatible handset in a range of price-points . What you see here is the newly announced Samsung A827 Access, complete with a dedicated “TV” button to “access” all that MediaFLO TV goodness. With a 1.3 megapixel shooter, small display, and fairly unremarkable design, the quad-band Samsung Access looks to be firmly planted in the lower-end of AT&T MediaFLO lineup. We’re expecting a likewise low-end price-point for this handset as well. ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:AT&T MediaFLO Mobile TV coming ASAP in 2008Samsung drops SGH-J200 candybar - the lower end E590Samsung Katalyst t739 for T-Mobile HotSpot@Home service?MetroPCS launches the Samsung R410Samsung SPH-M800 getting primped for Sprint
  • AT&T MediaFLO Mobile TV coming ASAP in 2008

So, the AT&T deal with Qualcomm to bring the mobile TV technology MediaFLO to its stable of mobile phones (including a few Nokia handsets) didn’t exactly help calm the Nokia-Qualcomm battle this year. In fact, the incessant quarreling was probably the reason that AT&T had to delay launching its MediaFLO service until next year. We’re hearing from AT&T that they are working to bring MediaFLO “as soon as possible” in 2008. The network-tests are reportedly going very, very well” and AT&T wants to “make sure the user experience is absolutely optimal” before they go live with the mobile TV service. So, network test’s are going honky-dory but AT&T wants to delay the launch of MediaFLO? Sounds like the hold-up might have more to do with Qualcomm and Nokia’s bitter-feelings than AT&T’s desire to ensure “absolutely optimal” performance. You see, Nokia is pushing DVB-H as the mobile TV standard of choice, but AT&T’s MediaFLO deal with Qualcomm will require Nokia to do more business with Qualcomm - something we’re sure Nokia is loath to doing. In any case, AT&T’s MediaFLO-based mobile TV offering will be pretty much on par with Verizon Wireless’s VCAST TV service (which has been up and running for, like, ever). Unfortunately, we’re also hearing that AT&T’s prmoise of “advanced MediaFLO capabilities” may not make the cut. Datecasting and music features aren’t in the cards for AT&T’s MediaFLO, sorry. • Samsung A747 SLM goes live on AT&T

The slim Samsung A747 clamshell that we spotted on the FCC’s website has finally come out of hiding and into AT&T’s stable handsets. We speculated that the Samsung A747 flip-phone would be the dual-band successor to the music-centric AT&T SYNC and it seems we were right. The Samsung A747 will be hitting AT&T’s network as the AT&T Samsung SLM - in homage to the clamshell’s slim design - and will be the first Napster Mobile -compatible handset in the carrier’s lineup. And, the Samsung A747 SLM’s brushed metal exterior packs in a 2 megapixel camera, large external color display, Video Share, mobile banking , AT&T Mobile Music, stereo Bluetooth, and external memory microSD - making this a solid mid-range musicphone. The Napster Mobile service will allow users to download songs directly to the Samsung SLM for $1.99 per song or $7.49 for five songs. And, every download is complemented by an email that allows the user to download the Napster Mobile songs to the user’s home computer. If you’re looking for a mobile phone that can download Napster’s huge portfolio of music directly to the handset, then the AT&T Samsung A747 SLM might be just the ticket. And that brushed metal finish is definitely a winner. • AT&T launches nationwide mobile banking

It looks like AT&T is getting down with mobile banking. The No. 1 US wireless carrier has just launched their nationwide mobile banking service. Wachovia and SunTrust customers will be able to check balances, pay bills, and transfer funds using their AT&T cellphone - all for free. AT&T has partnered up with Wachovia and SunTrust to bring the mobile banking platform from Firethorn Holdings LLC, and Firethorn’s strategic partner, CheckFree Corp. to AT&T mobile phones across the nation. AT&T will start pre-loading the banking software on handsets starting later this year, and has made the mobile banking software available as a download to 30 of the most popular AT&T handsets already out on the market - representing about 30 million handsets. Mobile payments would be a lot more convenient - we can already take advantage of all our online banking features by logging straight into the online banking portal on our iPhone (or whatever other capable handset we happen to be using at the time). But hey, we’ll take what we can get. And we’re sure those with lesser handsets will be happy to hear that they can get all their Wachovia and SunTrust banking done on their cellphone. Full press release on the link. SAN ANTONIO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AT&T Inc. today announced the launch of a comprehensive, easy-to-use mobile banking platform that will enable consumers to view account balances and history, transfer funds and pay bills from their AT&T mobile handsets. Through an innovative relationship, AT&T, Wachovia Corp. (NYSE:WB), SunTrust Banks Inc. and mobile banking and payment enabler Firethorn Holdings LLC — and Firethorn’s strategic partner, CheckFree Corp. (Nasdaq: CKFR) — are providing a mobile banking solution that is accessible to millions of Wachovia and SunTrust customers. “The ability to perform banking functions using a wireless handset is attractive for people who need to make financial decisions on the...
  • Microsoft launches System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 - pushing mobile enterprise mobile to the edge

So, we’re here at CTIA San Francisco 2007 and the first thing on our agenda was the Microsoft launch luncheon (try saying that three times, fast). Here’s what they’ve got planned… In keeping with the Microsoft’s expertise in enterprise mobile solutions, Microsoft has launched their first “dedicated mobile device management server” - Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. And, to help roll-out device compatibility with the Mobile Device Manager, Microsoft has teamed up with AT&T and Sprint to bring Microsoft has keyed in on the business customer’s needs beyond the realm of simple email, contact management, and calendar sync-ing. They’re leveraging the Windows Mobile platform to bring a new level of integration and user-level management to the enterprise IT professional. With features like over-the-air application delivery and secure VPN connectivity, the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 aims to ensure that fleet-management of Windows Mobile devices maintains “end-to-end data integrity” as well as providing secure access to corporate data - in other words, Windows Mobile device fleets can all be updated and synchronized with ease and allow user-corporate VPN connection under the watchful eye of the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Center 2008. IT heads will be happy to hear that the new Mobile Device Center will employ an “always on” connection - affording them the control they need to maintain and ensure fleet integrity. Should the “always on” connection drop-out, Microsoft’s “fast reconnect” technology gets the user securely back online without having to re-authenticate. And, if the IT department sees a problem with any device in their fleet, System Center Mobile Device Manager provides the IT Administrator with the power to lock down a specific handset - they can disable Bluetooth, SMS/MMS, WLAN (WiFi), InfraRed, POP/IMAP...
  • HP iPAQ 910 on AT&T's 3G network?

Wouldn’t that be nice. Well, it seems AT&T’s higher-ups thought so too. According to HP’s website (Warning: PDF link), it looks like the new HP iPAQ 910c ( HP iPAQ 914c ) is headed to AT&T’s network. We’re expecting HP’s renewed effort into smartphones to bring the 2.5 inch 240×320 touchscreen, 3 megapixel camera, A-GPS, WiFi b/g, Google Maps, and all that delicious 850/1900Mhz HSDPA love to AT&T’s 3G network. Oh, and let’s not forget that all those guts will be powered by the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional OS. AT&T’s going to have all their bases covered when it gets around to releasing all those WinMo6 devices in the coming weeks . Whatever your preference, AT&T has your form-factor and price-point covered. • HTC TyTn II P4550 Kaiser could rock HSUPA

With the recent release of the uber-smartphone from HTC, we’re squirming in our seats for AT&T to bring us the HTC Kaiser TyTn II P4550 as the AT&T Tilt . The HTC Kaiser will be the most bad-ass smartphone on the market - with integrated GPS, quad-band GSM with tri-band UMTS (HSDPA makes this thing 3.5G), 3 megapixel autofocus camera, Bluetooth 2.0, 256MB ROM/128MB RAM, WiFi b/g, 2.8 inch display, Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional, and of course, that trick tilt-up keyboard, it’s not hard to see why. One thing that was missing, however, was the inclusion of HSUPA. We kind of expected the mother of all smartphones to get HSUPA high-speed upload speeds of 1.4Mbps to complement the HSDPA connectivity, but the launch details didn’t make any mention of such luck. However, it seems there might still be some HSUPA goodies in the cards. French carrier Orange has released an HSUPA upgrade roadmap for it’s handset lineup - and it seems to indicate that the HTC TyTn II Kaiser P4550 will support HSUPA data connections once Orange’s infrastructure is up to speed, as it were. How great would it be to get HSUPA upload-speeds with our AT&T Tilt? It’s nice to dream. • AT&T Samsung BlackJack slated for Windows Mobile 6.0 upgrade on September 17?

With Samsung’s Windows Mobile 6.0 upgrade for the Samsung SGH-i600 already out in the wild, it makes sense for the AT&T-branded BlackJack get the same OS refresh. Word on the street has it that the Samsung BlackJack will be getting some Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard love from AT&T. We’ve been expecting this upgrade to be released in late summer , and guess what, it’s pretty late in the summer season. While the WM6 rollout for the BlackJack missed the late July window , a September 17 release date still works for “late summer” timing (wait, that is still summer, right?). Now, will the WinMo6.0 upgrade endow the AT&T BlackJack with that hidden Video Share feature that we mentioned earlier ? We don’t know, but give it a couple weeks - we’ll know more then. If you just can’t handle the couple-week wait for AT&T to drop the WM6-bomb on us, you can always get yourself that leaked Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard ROM - although, it’s quite buggy (Google is your friend). • AT&T / Cingular Blakjack may be getting Windows Mobile 6.0 and Video Share soon!

According to WMExperts.com, the AT&T (formerly Cingular) Blackjack may be poised to take on Video Share functionality and AT&T-branded Windows Mobile 6.0 come late July. The rumor is based on unconfirmed speculation involving a hacked version of the AT&T Windows Mobile 6.0 Blackjack ROM that included a Video Share icon. The late July release is [...]
