  • U.K. advertising authority bans iPhone ad

The U.K.'s Advertising Standards Authority has banned an ad for the iPhone that promises users access to "all parts of the Internet" on their Apple device. The TV ad shows a person surfing through holiday-related Web pages on the iPhone while a voice says, "You never know which part of the Internet you'll need ... which is why all parts of the Internet are on the iPhone." The ad prompted two disputes with the ASA, both of which claimed the ad was misleading because the iPhone doesn't offer Flash or Java and not all Web sites can be seen in their entirety. Meanwhile, Apple says the ad is not misleading and instead refers to the iPhone's ability to offer "full" Internet access rather than WAP pages or the walled-garden approach. • Jobs: Adobe Flash not good enough for iPhone

According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, a large chunk of web video content is unavailable for viewing via the computing giant's iPhone because software developer Adobe Systems' Flash Player mobile media player simply isn't good enough. Speaking at Apple's annual shareholder meeting Tuesday, Jobs said the iPhone requires a media player more robust than the current Flash mobile solution, arguing that while the Flash Player for laptops fits the bill, it is designed for devices larger than the iPhone, and therefore performs too slowly on handsets. "There's this missing product in the middle," Jobs said. Web-based videos for iPhone must be optimized for Apple-endorsed file formats--at present, only user-generated video site YouTube is willing to jump through that particular hoop, greatly limiting the video content available to iPhone users. • Google: iPhone traffic dominates mobile search

Web services giant Google this week said Apple's iPhone is responsible for 50 times the number of mobile searches of any rival handset, with Google's mobile head Vic Gundotra forecasting that mobile search will soon overtake traditional web search if other device makers make mobile web access as user-friendly. Speaking to The Financial Times , Gundotra said he first assumed the iPhone search data was a mistake: "[We] made our engineers check the logs again," he said. At Mobile World Congress, T-Mobile announced it will drop Google in favor of new mobile search partner Yahoo--according to Gundotra, operator deals similar to the T-Mobile partnership are becoming less vital as subscribers browse beyond the confines of the carrier deck. "The world is changing. Users want an internet without fences. They know how to type in Google.com if they want to get to it. Two years ago the operators were still playing the role of gatekeepers, but that is no longer the role for them." Gundotra added that Google maintains no plans to build its own handset based on the company's fledgling Android mobile OS. "We want every phone to be a Google phone," he said. "We are ultimately talking about thousands of devices." • iPhone web traffic to Google outpaces all other smartphones

iPhone, Safari, web-browsing. There’s not much that needs to be said about the iPhone’s web-surfing prowess. We’ve lauded the Apple phone’s web-browser time and time again , and it seems the iPhone-owning population is really putting it to work. The New York Times is reporting that iPhone web-traffic to Google has surpassed that from BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices. Moreover, iPhone-traffic to Google outpaced traffic from the Nokia-favorite Symbian platform on Chrismas. Is it any wonder that Google customized its iGoogle offering for iPhones ? Now, to put all that iPhone web-traffic into perspective - Windows Mobile devices hold 11% of global smartphone market share, BlackBerry boasts a 10% market share, while Symbian maintains a 63% strangle-hold on global market share. Just how did the iPhone, with its lowly 2% global market share (according to IDC), manage to outpace web-traffic from all other smartphone platforms? It’s the web-browser/multi-touch combo that we’ve been praising this whole time. EDGE-smedge - even with a slow data connection, the web-browsing experience is un-paralleled on the iPhone. • ESPN launches PodCenter for the Apple iPhone

Even with the limitations of the iPhone, ESPN has chosen to partner with Apple to release an iPhone-specific version of their PodCenter. The service will bring “a network of 35 different podcasts and a portfolio of 15 to 20 sponsors” to the iPhone, Andrew Hampp reports for AdAge . Marc Horine, ESPN’s VP-digital partnerships and radio, says that the decision to relaunch the PodCenter service for the iPhone was based on the fact that, “It’s not as easy to deliver podcasts through mobile devices right now. [The] iPhone allows us because the Safari internet browser takes you to the special player. Most [phones] don’t have the functionality the iPhone has.” Starting today, iPhone users will see the re-launched, iPhone-friendly content on ESPN PodCenter . And, iPhone users can expect exclusive PodCenter content to start showing up through iTunes - all thanks to that iPhone’s functionality. Says Mr. Horine, “We’re constantly trying to innovate building applications to better serve sports fans, and the iPhone player was developed to make it better to consume content. What’s great about the [PodCenter] player is it’s now wherever you are.” [Via: Apple Phone Show ] ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:Apple launches the Apple iPhone guided tour!Brand new Apple iPhone YouTube advertisement!ESPN goes mobile, againApple iPhone release date confirmed - iPhone Launches June 29!!ESPN plans to patent system for mobile content analysis
  • Online storage service Box.net adds support for iPhone

Everyone needs additional storage space these days. Yeah, hard drives are cheap as never before, but having some of your stuff online gives you that edge of mobility, many of us are looking for. So it doesn’t surprises online storage providers are having more and more users every day. One of the most popular such services, Box.net, recently added support for Apple’s handset. Located at “ i.box.net “, the optimized interface allows iPhone users to easily access their files from everywhere. Box.net already had a mobile-optimized version, but this one is (as expected) more slicker to suit that uber-cool style Apple is pushing. Suddenly your 4 or 8 GB iPhone could store more than you imagined… Also to check - SeeFile.com’s iPhone storage service . • iBloglines - Bloglines optimized for iPhone

While there is no real iPhone RSS feed reader application, there are a number of web-based solutions which could be easily used on your shiny new handset — Apple even made its own web-based RSS reader optimized for their phone. Still, you may want to use your current RSS reader on your iPhone, to keep track of all the saved entries and categories/tags. In case you’re using Bloglines, well… now you can use it on your iPhone! The popular web-based RSS reader just launched the version of its service optimized for iPhone’s touchscreen at i.bloglines.com . All your feeds are there and the images are re-sized for faster loading time, which I find especially important when accessing through EDGE network. One thing that bothers me is that I can’t see my saved entries. Hopefully, Bloglines will fix this… ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:37signals' Ta-da List for iPhone releasedZoho optimizes for iPhone; Launches iZohoMorfik announces iPhone web development tool; Now it's easy to make iPhone-optimized web appsOneTrip, first iPhone-optimized 3rd party (Web) appHello World - First REAL iPhone 3rd party app is here
  • Seek out the Internet's music files with SeeqPod

Like they say, you can never be too thin, too rich, or have too many songs stored on your iPhone. Well, maybe we made that last part up - but it’s true, nonetheless. We want unlimited storage with access to virtually every song to ever grace a pop chart. But, alas, we only have 8GB of storage space - and searching out and downloading music on a P2P network buying music on iTunes can be a trying experience. First, there’s the aspect of cost. Then there’s the time it takes to download, then there’s the need to get it onto your iPhone. Wouldn’t it be great if all you had to do to enjoy some quality music was to search the Internet, hit “play,” and sit back and listen? SeeqPod seems to think so. The new SeeqPod Playable Search streaming music service (in beta form) scrubs the internets for music files and lists them in their comprehensive collection - by artist name. Search for the song you want to listen to and, like magic, the track starts streaming (in its original form, no transcoding) on your iPhone - for free! How trick is that? With a few more featuers, like an integrated playlist function, the SeeqPod service could go toe-to-toe with the premium iTunes music service. Curious? Point your iPhone’s Safari browser to seeqpod.com and the website will automatically detect your iPhone and whisk you away to the magical land of no-fee, no-wait, streaming music! Did we mention the service is free?
