  • Microsoft inks Silverlight deal with Nokia

    Microsoft is poised to announce it will create of a version of its Silverlight cross-platform browser plug-in for the Symbian OS, enabling video and interactive web application services for Nokia Series 60 smartphones and Series 40 devices. Microsoft and Nokia are scheduled to announce the agreement today at Microsoft's MIX08 conference. Microsoft is positioning the integrated rich-media Silverlight solution as an alternative to Adobe's Flash Player, and already boasts content partnerships with NBC and Major League Baseball. Microsoft will release a Windows Mobile-based version of Silverlight later this year, according to John Case, general manager of Microsoft's developer division: "The whole Silverlight strategy is to provide one programming model and ubiquity," Case told CNET .   • Vivendi, Nokia ink Download! mobile gaming deal

    Vivendi Games Mobile announced an agreement with Nokia to bring a spate of mobile titles to hundreds of thousands of handsets via Nokia's Download! application, which is embedded on more than 50 phones, N-series and E-series devices worldwide. According to Vivendi Games Mobile, the client-based Download! mobile shop is constantly refreshed over-the-air with the latest hit titles, among them franchises like Crash , Leisure Suit Larry and Spyro --Vivendi and Nokia will also offer related content like wallpapers and ring tones. "The challenge in the mobile games value chain is not only to make great games and attract customers, but also in the effective merchandising of games and the ease with which consumers can find, purchase, and download games," said Vivendi Games Mobile president Paul Maglione in a prepared statement. "Nokia has met this challenge by providing visibility and easy access to great content via Download!. The end result is a new and promising distribution channel that creates further 'impulse buy' opportunities for our titles and also allows customers to enjoy the best mobile games on demand."
