  • LightPole debuts end-to-end publishing solution

    Mobile application service provider LightPole announced the release its LightPole Publishing System, a solution promising publishers, bloggers and other content providers the tools to distribute content to mobile devices and engage subscribers in two-way communication. According to LightPole, the service enables subscriber access to real-time, location-based mobile information while supporting a variety of business models including subscriptions, transactions and advertising; publishers may also configure their content to enable reader comments, link sharing and online dialogue. LightPole launches its mobile infrastructure with third-party solutions from partners including Yahoo, Yelp, Platial and MappyHour--the service also supports hundreds of devices from AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.   • Yahoo debuts mobile content management solution

    Web services giant Yahoo announced the launch of Yahoo onePlace, a mobile content management solution promising to instantly organize personalized information and content into a single location. According to Yahoo, onePlace bookmarks instantly link to news feeds, websites, videos, images, emails, search queries and related online content, with all information automatically updated as well as categorized and tagged to enable subscribers to more intuitively find and combine content in ways that make the most sense to them. Yahoo cites the example of a user planning a vacation to Paris, who could create a mobile "Paris" collection linking to weather conditions, city guides, restaurant reviews, hotel reservations, walking maps, Edith Piaf songs, English-French dictionaries, winery recommendations, and so forth. Consumers may configure onePlace for hundreds of different topics. Yahoo said onePlace will launch during the second quarter in tandem with its new oneConnect mobile search solution. "Yahoo onePlace is where users will be able to find what matters to them the most, no matter where their interests, passions and information come from," said Yahoo executive vice president Marco Boerries in a prepared statement.     Mobile application service provider iamota announced the release of iamota impact, a new service enabling users to create and launch their own mobile services. According to iamota, the impact service takes care of all wireless carrier certifications, device-specific content optimizations and DRM requirements, freeing the user to concentrate on adding content and promoting their services. iamota promises agencies and brands of all sizes can be up and running on the mobile platform within 24 hours, offering three impact flavors--Starter, Growth and Professional--with services beginning at $49.99 per month. "iamota impact is a unique solution that brings the mobile channel to agencies and brands in a self-serve, user-driven way," said iamota president and CEO Pete Smyth in a prepared statement.   • Ericsson debuts Multimedia Communication Suite

    Technology provider Ericsson unveiled the Ericsson Multimedia Communication Suite, a new mobile user interface promising more intuitive access to mobile messaging and presence applications. Launched via Sony Ericsson feature devices including the W760, the Ericsson MCS solutions enables consumers to access new address book features like avatars, photos and personal free text, with presence features keeping track of contacts and their respective applications. The MCS applications are integrated with existing voice, video and messaging services, promoting additional handset services as consumers share their everyday experiences with family and friends. "We see from studies that the communication patterns are changing, messaging type of services is dominating and the demand for enriched communication is here," said Ericsson head of multimedia solutions Claes Ödman in a prepared statement. "With our Multimedia Communication Suite we can take the consumer experience one step further, making it easier with intuitive interface and allow people to communicate in a richer way."   • Medio Systems unveils On-Device Portal

    Mobile search and advertising solutions provider Medio Systems announced the launch of the Medio On-Device Portal, a consumer "search-and-discover" application embedded on handsets and created for mass-market users. Promising one-click access to content like real-time news, sport scores, weather, flight status and local directory information, the open-platform Medio ODP features a graphical user interface and a universal search box at the top of the handset screen. According to Medio, the ODP also enables operators to customize their portals, with T-Mobile already agreeing to pre-load the application on the Nokia 6263 and Motorola RAZR II devices. Additional phones will follow in Q1 2008. "While smartphones are popular, it is easy to forget that 89 percent of U.S. subscribers are still using 'feature phones,'" said Medio Systems CEO Brian Lent in a prepared statement. "These phones typically retail for less than $100 and are not optimized for mobile content consumption and Internet connectivity. For these feature phone users, finding content on their device has often been a frustrating process.   • The Wall Street Journal goes mobile

    The Wall Street Journal and mobile solutions provider Action Engine announced a free, downloadable application promising consumers wireless access to the WSJ.com, MarketWatch.com, and Barrons.com websites. The service enables users to read news, manage their personal stock portfolio, track the stock market, view video clips and listen to streaming podcasts. The Wall Street Journal service will debut exclusively on Windows Mobile-based handsets--Windows Mobile is also the launch advertiser. "We recognize that today's busy professionals need continuous access to top business and financial news, and we can now ensure they have it anytime, anywhere," said Dow Jones & Company vice president of franchise development Matt Goldberg said in a prepared statement. "By offering this mobile application that consumers can download directly onto their phones, anyone--not just Wall Street Journal subscribers--can receive instant access to news, stocks, videos and information across our suite of news sites."     Mobile messaging software provider Funambol and mobile advertising solutions provider Amobee Media Systems together announced an ad-based mobile email solution that promises to generate operator revenue by shifting content subsidization from mobile users to advertisers. According to Amobee and Funambol, the solution integrates the former's Handset Application Programming Interface with the latter's Java ME push email client, displaying ads from Amobee's media partners. The Amobee Media Network ensures the ads and brands displayed in users' mobile email adhere to the editorial control and production standards of operators and service providers that deploy the solution. "Research indicates that many more people would use mobile email if it were more affordable and it worked on their existing phones. The Amobee Funambol solution accomplishes just that," said Amobee CEO Zohar Levkovitz in a prepared statement. "We are excited to work with Funambol as their solution is gaining major traction with mobile operators and service providers around the world. The combination of Amobee and Funambol represents the first to market end-to-end telco grade ad-based open source mobile e-mail solution for the mass market."
