  • Alltel debuts Voicemail MAX celebrity greetings

    Alltel Wireless announced it will debut Voicemail MAX, a new application enabling subscribers to personalize their outgoing voicemail greetings with the addition of celebrity voices. Developed by mobile content distributor 9 Squared, Voicemail MAX presently features over 500 audio clips from categories including Hip Hop Celebrities, Rock Stars, Sports, Business, Holiday and Cartoons; marquee names include comedians Larry the Cable Guy, Steve Harvey, Orlando Jones, rapper T.I., and stars from Comedy Central's Reno 911. Each greeting is $2.99. "With hundreds of messages to choose from, customers can select voicemail greetings that match their personalities for incoming calls from friends, family and colleagues," said Alltel's director of multimedia content Kristi Crum in a prepared statement.   • Alltel launches LBS Nationwide Roaming

    Alltel Wireless announced the launch of LBS Nationwide Roaming, enabling subscribers to access GPS-based navigation and location applications outside of their home network area. According to Alltel, LBS applications including TeleNav GPS Navigator, Alltel Navigation, Axcess Family Finder and WHERE will now function across the operator's existing network as well as in more than 45 major metro areas that were inoperable prior to recent network enhancements. Standard roaming charges apply. "Through LBS Nationwide Roaming, our customers are able to use a GPS application when it matters most, especially when they are in unfamiliar territory," said Alltel director of multimedia content Kristi Crum in a prepared statement.   • Alltel signs up for AAA Mobile

    Alltel Wireless announced an agreement with motoring and leisure travel organization AAA to launch the GPS application AAA Mobile via the operator's Axcess Shop. AAA Mobile enables Alltel customers to receive visual and audible directions to AAA-approved points of interest and related sites, including Diamond Rated hotels and restaurants, as well as access AAA member roadside assistance. Powered by navigation and local search firm Networks In Motion's LBS platform, AAA Mobile is available for $9.99 per month or $2.99 per day on Alltel handsets including the Samsung u520, LG AX8600, Samsung r500, Motorola Z6M, Motorola V9m and Motorola V3a.   • Alltel launches Spinvox voice-to-text service

    Last August, Alltel announced its plans to deploy Spinvox's voice-to-text service in fourth quarter 2007, and the carrier is making good on that promise. The service is available in a variety of pricing packages: For $19.99 per month subscribers get 100 voicemail conversions with each additional conversion costing 10 cents each. For $9.99 per month, subscribers get 50 voicemail conversions with each additional conversion costing 20 cents. And for $4.99 per month, subscribers get 20 voicemail conversions with each additional conversion costing 25 cents. According to Craig Kirkland, director of messaging and voice services at Alltel, the carrier believes that the Spinvox service will drive more data usage and will increase the likelihood that subscribers will use text messaging. "This is a very good service. It's extremely accurate," Kirkland said in an interview with FierceMobileContent .     Alltel Wireless introduced Digby Powered by Alltel, a free mobile shopping service optimized for BlackBerry smartphones. Developed by parent firm 30 Second Software, the Digby service provides Alltel's Blackberry customers access to books, music, electronics and gifts from retailers including Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Godiva Chocolatier, FTD, Fossil and Vermont Teddy Bears--product selection is updated daily, with new items and retail partners added weekly. Digby was earlier honored as one of FierceMobileContent 's 2007 Top Mobile Applications Awards winners.
