  • Hands-on with Motorola's MOTOMING A1600

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Motorola , Linux , GSM , EDGE Does the MING series have a place in North America? The stylish (well, depending on who you ask) Linux-based Moto smartphones have always been designed from the ground up for the Chinese market going back to the original A1200 , but from afar, it's easy to see why you might want to put one in your pocket no matter where you live; after all, they look unlike anything else on the market, they're smartphones, they're delightfully compact, and they rock touchscreens. But realistically, is it possible to make a MING your daily dialer? Read on! Thanks to the good folks at Wireless Imports for the hookup! • Motorola A1600 MING 2 garners FCC approval

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Linux , GSM , EDGE Yo, Americans: if you want to learn more about a sweet-looking phone that Motorola doesn't think you should have, we've got just the place for you. Take a stroll on over to the FCC's documentation site, where you'll find a wealth of information on Moto's rumored A1600 MING 2 . The Linux-based smartphone carries over the important parts of the original MING's trademark industrial design but upgrades to a respectable 3.2 megapixel camera, quadband EDGE, and allegedly WiFi -- though we couldn't find any mention of it in the manual. Sadly, as we mentioned, there doesn't appear to be any plan to bring the A1600 to the States with a user's manual emblazoned with "Asia/EMEA" on page 1, but with that worldband radio, at least it'll be pretty painless to import and use it if you're so inclined. • Why wait for the launch? Motorola MING 2 being sold in China

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Linux , GSM First seen last year and rumored for a Q2 '08 release , it seems like some impatient individuals in the Far East (where the handset is presumably made) decided to take matters into their own hands and have a little "launch" of their own, if you will, with a prototype unit that fell just a little too far from the manufacturing facility's tree. Unwired View turned up this A1600 MING 2 for sale in Shenzen, China, offering a fabulous glimpse at the Linux-based MING successor; turns out she sports WiFi, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and integrated GPS. Add world-band HSDPA, Motorola, and our money is yours. Honest. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Motorola launching MOTO Ming 2 in Q2 2007

Remember when we said that there were rumblings of Motorola’s Linux-based MOTOMING successor, the Motorola A1600 Ming 2, launching in February of 2008? Right, well, it turns out that the MOTOMING 2 is due out in Q2 of 2008. DigiTimes reports that Inventec has secured the manufacturing contract. Bill Chen, General Manager of Motorola Taiwan’s Mobile Device business has confirmed that the next-gen MOTOMING will be hitting the mainstream later than expected - and in high-end and low-end trim. Both trim-levels are EDGE-only, which is a bit confusing. EDGE on a low-end device makes sense, but on a high-end handset? Hey, if the iPhone can do it, why not a Linux-based smartphone from Motorola? • Motorola A1600 MING 2 - MOTOMING successor coming next year?

The successor to Motorola’s svelte and dated MotoMING A1200 MING PDA phone has been a long time in the making. Motorola’s original A1200 MING was a great idea, but it just never quite captured a significant following in the US - although you can still find some brand-new (albeit years-old) A1200 MING handsets in some cut-rate third-party retailer storefronts. Well, now we’re hearing that Motorola is prepping the successor to the A1200 MING with their new MotoMING A1600 MING 2 smartphone. The new A1600 MING 2 will sport essentially the same design philosophy of its forebear, but will be packing in the goods - 3.2 megapixel camera (with autofocus and LED flash), quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM radio, WiFi, AGPS, talking dictionary (the A1200 was a hit with the Chinese set, after all), and a faster CPU. According to Enet , the new MING 2 will boast a 17.5mm-thick profile and a new Linux-based touchscreen UI. We’ve heard that the MOTOMING 2 would sport some US-friendly 3G frequencies as well, but we’ll just have to wait and see how that rumor pans out. Word on the street has it that Motorola will be launching their A1600 MOTOMING 2 in February, so the wait won’t be all too unbearable. With 3G, GPS, and WiFi, we’re certainly looking forward to getting a MOTOMING 2 in our hands.
