  • Arima Communications to ship 10 million handsets to LG in 2009, say sources

Arima Communications is expected to produce about 9-10 handsets for LG Electronics (LGE) in 2009 with combined shipments likely to surpass 10 million units, compared to 3-3.5 million units projected for 2008, according to information provided by sources at Taiwan handset component makers. With increasing handset outsourcing to Arima, LGE is expected to replace Sony Ericsson as Arima's largest client in 2009, the sources contended. To help LGE make more inroads into emerging markets such as in Latin America, Arima has begun developing low-cost models using the ULC2+ platform from Infineon Technologies, in addition to existing solutions from MediaTek, the sources noted. Although Arima's shipments to Sony Ericsson were reduced substantially in the first half of 2008 due to a changing product strategy at the vendor, Arima will begin shipping two new handsets, the R300 and T303, to Sony Ericsson later this quarter, said the sources. After shipping 5.46 million handsets in the first half of this year, Arima is expected to see its handset shipments top 4.5-5 million handsets in the third quarter and 4.-4.5 million units in the fourth quarter, estimated the sources.

  • Taiwan market: LG Electronics to launch DVB-T mobile TV handsets in 3Q08

LG Electronics (LGE) plans to introduce its mobile TV handset, the HB620T, into the Taiwan market later this quarter, according sources at Taiwan retail channels. The HB620T, which has already launched in Germany, supports DVB-T as well as 3.5G technology, according to data available from LGE. Despite the fact that Nokia has started selling its N77 DVB-H handsets in Taiwan, the leading handset vendors have recently switched their focus on marketing DVB-T handsets that can receive free-to-air broadcasts as Taiwan's government has not yet set a timetable for the release DVB-H operating licenses, the sources noted. LGE's HB620T mobile TV handset
  • Foxconn and MediaTek land handset orders from LGE

Via investment at a MediaTek subsidiary, Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and MediaTek have secured new handset orders from LG Electronics (LGE), posing potential threats to LGE's existing OEM partners Arima Communications and Compal Communications, according to sources at handset makers in Taiwan. Currently Arima is the major handset OEM for LGE, responsible for the production of 9-10 handsets with shipments already started in 2008. Compal, in the meantime, has also developed a new clamshell model for LGE, the sources said. They noted that all the handsets that Arima produces for LGE support MediaTek's platform. But they also remarked in saying that some new handsets from LGE support mobile platforms from Infineon Technologies and Texas Instruments (TI). Terry Guo, chairman of Foxconn, placed investment at a MediaTek subsidiary earlier. The sources noted that this subsidiary has rich R&D experience as most its R&D engineers were sourced from DARTS Technologies. Foxconn originally planned to acquire the subsidiary but the deal failed because MediaTek still wanted to deploy into the smartphone market via the subsidiary, the sources detailed. The MediaTek handset subsidiary was established in May 2007 on a capital size of NT$430 million (US$14.1 million). The majority of business focuses on handset design. The company currently has about 150 employees. Besides DARTS, some engineers came from BenQ and Quanta Computer. The sources added that shipments of the company's first smartphone to a Thailand-based distributor started recently. source
  • Arima Communications and Elcoteq suspend merger talks; to kick off joint production for LGE

Taiwan-based ODM handset maker Arima Communications and Europe-based EMS provider Elcoteq have temporarily suspended talks for a possible merger and instead the two companies will team up together for the production of low-cost handsets for LG Electronics, according to sources close to the deal. The merger talks between the two companies have continued for three years but have hit a deadlock recently as the companies disagreed over the scale of equity acquisition, the sources indicated. Arima had preferred to acquire part of Elcoteq's assets in order to integrate its own ODM capability with Elcoteq's EMS strength in handset production, whereas Elcoteq was more willing to sell its assets in a bundled deal, noted the sources. Although Arima and Elcoteq have failed to finalize the acquisition talks, the two companies have agreed to join forces to produce low-cost handsets for LGE, said the sources. Under the cooperation plan, Arima will switch its outsourcing of LGE's low-cost handsets targeting the Latin American market from Flextronics International to Elcoteq's plant in Brazil, with the production volumes likely to reach 'several' million units, the sourced added.
  • LG set to release HB620T and other DVB-T handsets in Taiwan later this quarter
