  • LG's VX8350 for Verizon comes into view

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA The heir apparent to the VX8300 is coming into full focus now, thanks in no small part to an interactive manual popping up over on Verizon's Testman site. The aptly named VX8350 dispenses of its predecessor's unsightly aerial antenna, replaces the external OLED with a traditional color LCD, and ups the max expansion to a full 4GB via microSD; the external music controls, stereo Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel cam, and 220 x 176 (blech!) primary display all carry over. phoneArena reports that this one will start to phase in as VX8300 stock depletes, running $79 on a two year contract after $50 rebate. • Sprint's roadmap for remainder of '07 outed, too?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , LG , Motorola , Palm , Pantech , RIM , Samsung , Sanyo , UTStarcom , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Following a thorough run-through of Verizon's plans for the rest of the year, this broader peep into Sprint's near future than we've seen before -- if real, anyway -- means that we now pretty much know everything there is to know about the wide world of CDMA here in the States for the next few months. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling, ain't it? Anyway, let's have a look: Palm is said to come swinging in with two, the 500 on the low end with a $99 price point on October 14 and an 800w ("w" stands for Windows Mobile 6 here, friends) up top -- though the latter doesn't grace shelves until Q1 of '08. Novatel gets down with an updated version of the U720 dubbed U727 (what else?) come September 30. Sanyo meanwhile should add the S1 candybar to replace the SCP-4930 on October 14, but November 4 is allegedly when things really start to heat up. That day should bring the LG LX260 , RIM BlackBerry Pearl 2 , HTC Vogue , and the UTStarcom PX-00, a low-cost Rev A data card to replace the PX-500 . The Motorola Q9c -- possibly with GSM international roaming -- should drop by a little later in November, while a dual-mode CDMA / GSM rendition of the Samsung BlackJack replaces the IP-830w early next year. Again, this is all unconfirmed, but it seems plausible enough. We'll throw up any corroborating info as we get it. [Via Slashphone ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • LG says "Aloha" to Virgin Mobile

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Virgin Mobile , 1xRTT , MVNOs , CDMA Pardon the pun -- it can't be helped. Virgin Mobile is known for keeping its handsets on the lower end, owing largely to the fact that the MVNO does the lion's share of its business with prepaid accounts (read: contract-free phones). In fact, two of its existing clamshells lack an external display -- a nearly standard feature on all but the most inexpensive flips -- so it comes as no surprise that the newly-introduced LG Aloha is in the same vein. Features include a color display, speakerphone, and support for up to 199 contacts, but that's about it -- if you need a camera or Bluetooth, look elsewhere. Grab it starting in September for $34.99. • Verizon's roadmap for remainder of '07 gets liberated

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , LG , Motorola , Others , Palm , Samsung , UTStarcom , Verizon Wireless , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA phoneArena scored a wealth -- nay, a veritable cornucopia of information detailing Verizon's releases for the rest of 2007, and we can say with some confidence that there's something in here for everyone. Starting with smartphones, SMT5800 , XV6800 , Samsung i760 , and Motorola Q9m should hit in October, October, September, and August (yay, this month!) respectively. A second, business oriented variant of the Q9, dubbed the Q9c, will follow on in the fourth quarter. If Windows Mobile ain't your cup of tea, have a gander at the Palm Treo 755p and RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 (pictured), both coming in November. There isn't much to say about the 755p that hasn't already been said, but the 8130 is indeed a Pearl of the "new" variety , upping the cam to 2 megapixels while adding A2DP and a 3.5mm jack. Turning to dumbphones, Verizon's got the full spread from low to high end. The Samsung U410, self-branded CDM-8630 and LG VX8350 all appear to be pretty simple flips coming some time this half of the year. The Motorola Z6c looks to be a MediaFLO-less version of the Z6tv slider; the former drops in November while the latter is nebulously scheduled for the second half. Finally, the fancy U700 and U900 flips from Samsung offer 2 and 3 megapixel cams, respectively, and will both be available before the year's out. Whew! • LG LX160 gets real for Sprint

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Sprint-Nextel , 1xRTT , CDMA Sprint has launched the low-end (think "free") LX160 this week, offering up what appears a decent flip for those who don't need EV-DO or a camera. Features include Vision access (Sprint's way of saying 1xRTT), Bluetooth, tethering capability, voice memos, and speakerphone. Grab it now for nary a penny after activation -- $169.99 without. • Alltel intros "Wave" from LG

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Alltel , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA It seems Alltel's really rolling deep with this whole cute naming scheme it has going these days , christening its latest flip from LG the "Wave." The 1.3 megapixel cam isn't anything to get too excited about, but between the microSD slot, GPS, stereo Bluetooth, and EV-DO data, the clamshell seems like a decent deal for the $80 Alltel's asking on a two-year plan after rebate -- not to mention the added bonus of a "rolling design that mimics the curl of a wave as the deep colors fade into black." Alltel's verbage, not ours! Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Hands-on with the LG Muziq

Filed under: Handsets , Features , LG , Sprint-Nextel , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Forgetting the obviously Chocolate -inspired exterior for just a moment (Verizon will be hearing none of that, thank you very much), the LG Muziq is Sprint's latest entry into the booming midrange musicphone market. The EV-DO data, stereo Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and FM transmitter are all carryovers from the Muziq's most direct predecessor -- the Fusic -- but it's hard to argue that the new model hasn't made huge strides in its visual appeal, losing the aerial and trading up to a glossy black shell. And, oh yeah, the price is down to $99 on contract, too -- an $80 drop from the Fusic's initial go-to-market sticker. Needless to say, for tunes on the cheap, it's a good time to be in the market. %Gallery-4899% For better or worse, anyone familiar with Sprint's standard featurephone UI will feel right at home on the Muziq. It was a bit laggy at times, but not quite to the point where we wanted to throw it at a wall at high velocity. The music player is an extraordinarily basic Java-based one -- kinda odd for a phone named "Muziq," we reckon -- but it got the job done. Stereo sound quality was average to good using the included headphone adapter along with our own midrange 'buds. The Muziq bucks one of the latest industry fads, dual loudspeakers, though we found that its single speaker adjacent to the external controls was plenty loud and reasonably clear. We also had luck pairing the Muziq with a Motorola S9 to rock out with stereo Bluetooth; sound quality was about on par with wired headphones. The Muziq's physical controls are a mixed bag. The external touch sensitive music controls were actually a pleasure to use, thanks largely to haptic feedback (call us simpletons, but getting a little "bzzt" every time you touch a key just never gets old). The volume rocker is another story, though -- LG inexplicably put the thing...
  • Sprint launches LG Muziq -- uh, hoorah?

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Sprint-Nextel , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Right on schedule, Sprint has launched its new Muziq flip from LG. No surprises here: $100 (after instant savings, mail-in rebates and 2 year contract) buys you LG's LX570 clamshell with dedicated music controls, A2DP Bluetooth stereo audio, 1.3 megapixel cam, and a weak-azz 64MB MicroSD card (in the box) with room to grow up to 4GB at your own expense. It's also one of a few handsets to feature an FM Transmitter for untethered pumpage of your tunes over the car radio. Of course, it's also Sprint Music Store, Radio, and TV enabled as you'd expect a Sprint media phone to be. Come on, at least you could pretend to be a little excited. • Motorola W385, new LG Chocolates live on Verizon

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Thinking back to when we first caught wind of it , the turnaround on the ambiguously named VX8550 Chocolate from LG wasn't that bad -- but the same can't be said of Verizon's other retail introduction today, the midrange Motorola W385. This thing's been kicking around as a rumored Big Red device since April at the latest -- and yes, we'll admit that our sense of time is a bit skewed, but that's, like, forever . Anyhoo, pick up the VGA-cam'd, 160 x 128 screen'd W385 for $70 after all the contracts and discounts have been applied; meanwhile, the VX8500 successor can be yours for a nice, round hundie. • Up close with the Motorola W385, LG orange enV for Verizon

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA We've known these two were in the pipe, but there's something about big, pretty pictures that really drives the point home. First up is the Motorola W385 , an entry-level flip that borrows some design cues from its KRZR stablemate while deleting the external music controls and "ooh, shiny" finish. The orange VX9900 enV is... well, orange -- a color probably well-suited for the phone's decidedly funky attitude and target demo. Check the gallery for more footage! • LG's VX8700 clam launches with Verizon

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Prepare to get your shine on VZW customers -- the LG VX8700 is up, pretty, and ready for purchase. As a wink-wink, nudge-nudge in the direction of LG's Shine branding, Verizon calls the new clamshell a "shiny new addition" to their LG lineup. No surprises on the specs: V Cast support, stereo Bluetooth, microSD expansion and 2 megapixel cam. Ink a 2-year deal and she's yours for $179.99 after $50 online discount. • Hot flips: launch details for Verizon's VX8700, MOTORAZR maxx Ve

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Verizon's finally fessed up to a couple hotly-anticipated handsets that've been kicking around in rumorland for some months now: the MOTORAZR maxx Ve from Motorola and LG's VX8700 . The maxx Ve is the CDMA rendition of the V6 maxx for GSM networks, offering a 2 megapixel cam, touch sensitive controls, and a thin, sleek package -- in other words, nothing has changed since yesterday spec-wise -- and will drain your wallet, purse, or other currency-toting device of $200 after rebates on a two-year agreement when it hits on April 24. Announced alongside the maxx Ve, the VX8700 takes LG's Shine formula and brings it to the US for the first time, although Verizon has opted not to tag the phone with Shine branding for some reason. Like the maxx Ve, you get a 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, but this one's for the high-style types with a champagne-hued brushed metal case. It'll beat the Moto to market, rolling out on April 6 for $180 after rebates with the requisite contract.
