  • Klausner sues Verizon Wireless and LG over Visual Voicemail

Lawsuits over patented technologies are nothing new in the mobile industry. And, with frivolous lawsuits popping up left and right, it’s hard to keep a straight face whenever we hear of patent-holding firms suing industry big-wigs. Except this time, there’s some serious precedent in favor of the plaintiff. Verizon Wireless recently introduced their own Visual Voicemail [...]

  • AT&T adds LG Invision to Mobile TV lineup

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Just as we'd envisioned , the Invision candybar (if a phone this stubby can, in fact, be called a candybar) from LG is now a reality for AT&T. The phone becomes just AT&T's third to support its MediaFLO -based Mobile TV service, taking a similar line to Samsung's Access by stuffing a landscape display, 1.3-megapixel camera, and HSDPA into a squarish case that's sure to make minimalists and traditionalists swoon; what's more, it also takes the honor of being AT&T's smallest Mobile TV-equipped handset to date. It's available today for $99.99 with a $50 rebate and two years' worth of commitment -- just be sure to factor the cost of the Mobile TV add-on into your budget. • LG's CB630 "Invision" coming to AT&T Mobile TV in August

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , LG , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS So, we figure one of two things has happened here: either the Samsung Access has been a solid seller for AT&T, leading the carrier to request a near-clone from competitor LG -- or LG saw the Access and felt compelled to provide a clone of its own volition. Either way, the CB630 Invision is getting to the AT&T Mobile TV fight a little late, because we're actually hearing that the Access is already scheduled for an official sunset (not Sunset ) on August 24, along with the Sony Ericsson Z750 , Samsung SLM , and the Mobile TV-less version of the LG Vu , the CU915. We're also hearing that it'll launch on August 13 for $99.99 on contract with a $50 rebate, so getcha popcorn ready, people. [Thanks, anonymous tipster] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Samsung Instinct, LG Dare, iPhone 3G... fight!

Filed under: Handsets , Features , LG , Samsung , Apple Alright, you three are sworn enemies, so what are we waiting for? Let's get it on! Go ahead, seriously, exchange some blows. No better way to get the party started than with a little speed test; the Instinct's data services still seem to be jacked , but the Dare and iPhone 3G squared off with the LG model consistently besting Apple's by between 50-100kbps over Verizon's EV-DO network (see the gallery for the side-by-side). That's not to say the Dare is consistently the faster phone -- it has everything to do with the network in your area, the time of day, the circumstances, and which side of the bed you woke up on this morning -- but it's an interesting observation here nonetheless. We'll follow up with an Instinct speed test (and another round of testing on the Dare and iPhone) when we can. Gallery: Samsung Instinct, LG Dare, iPhone 3G... fight! • Iron Man contest winner announced!

Filed under: Handsets , Features , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Announcements After weeks of hand-wringing, we've finally settled on a winner of our contest for LG's uber-limited $1,500 Iron Man edition Shine ! We asked you to send in pictures of the busted-up pieces of garbage you call "phones," and holy cow, did we get some doozies. Without further adieu, our winner, Mark H., comes to us from Novato, California. Here's his story: "I need a new phone as you can see. I have had this Nokia phone since 2001. I'm in the military service and my friends make fun of my old phone and now they're really on me since my phone was run over by a car and I use electrical tape to keep the faceplate together. I don't get payed enough by the service to buy a nice new phone." Congratulations, Mark! Even if this relic were in perfect condition, it'd still be time for an upgrade. Let's try to keep this one a little less scuffed, because that solid gold battery cover definitely does not live up to the "Iron Man" name. Follow the break for some honorable mentions -- you guys made it really hard to choose! Continue reading Iron Man contest winner announced! Permalink | Email this | Comments

  • Hands-on with the LG Vu, Samsung Access, and AT&T Mobile TV

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Multimedia , LG , Samsung , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS These days, voice is the tip of the iceberg. Carriers are always -- and we do mean always -- looking for crafty ways to boost their average revenue per user, and with everyone and their brother offering an unlimited voice plan at this point, it's about data and value-add services more than it ever has been before. To that end, Verizon and AT&T have embraced MediaFLO as a way to keep their subscribers entertained on the road to the tune of a few extra bucks per month. AT&T's service, simply christened Mobile TV, has just launched with a pair of devices from Samsung and LG; naturally, we wanted to know whether the phones were worth the $199 and $299 AT&T's asking, respectively -- but perhaps more importantly, we had to figure out whether the service was worth sucking another $15 a month out of our already-strained wallets. • Sliders, colors the themes with AT&T's new arrivals

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Sony Ericsson , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS That black LG Shine we'd heard AT&T would be picking up is finally starting to trickle into stores, along with a green rendition of the Sony Ericsson W580i -- a phone that's no stranger to new paint jobs . Neither device is up on AT&T's site yet, so as of now, it looks like the only way to pick these two up is going to be to mosey on down to your local retailer. Sorry, couch potatoes! • Engadget Mobile, LG, and Stark Industries want you to have a $1,500 Iron Man phone

Filed under: Handsets , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Announcements If ever there were an LG Shine to live up to its lofty name, this would definitely be it. We'd like to introduce you to the Iron Man phone -- presented here by our boy Robert Downey, Jr. -- based on the Shine slider as sold by AT&T. Unlike the garden-variety Shine, the Iron Man edition trades up to a deep red case with gold plated highlights and a solid 18K gold battery cover to commemorate the launch of the film in style. That's plenty enough element 79 to give this thing some serious heft. We're not bragging, though -- we want you to have it. The phone is valued at a princely $1,500; twenty are being given away by LG directly -- we've got the twenty first. How do you pry it out of our hands? Easy: we want to see just how nasty, disgusting, and close to complete breakdown your current face candy is. Send us a pic and tell us a little bit about your poor, dilapidated phone and the long journey it's taken to its current state of disrepair. We'll pick the saddest entry and let you retire that terrible thing for something just a little flashier. One word of advice though: don't bother breaking your phone or taking a photo of your dad's Dynatac or something, that's not what we're looking for. Check out the gallery to see shots of the very Iron Man phone that could be yours, and don't forget to enter. Good luck! The rules (yeah, there are always rules) Send us your original photo. If we find your picture elsewhere on the internet, you will so be disqualified. Don't test us here, we've seen every picture of every phone. Ever. Email submissions to contests [at] engadget [dawt] com with the subject "I am Iron Man!" And for the love of our inbox, please keep your images 1MB or under, ok? You may only enter this contest once. If you enter this contest more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. Contest is open to anyone...
  • LG Vu officially available from AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , LG , ATT , GSM , EDGE No surprises here -- particularly since LG's Vu has been on sale through a number of AT&T retail outlets since late last month (whoops!). Today, however, the carrier is officially listing LG's latest for sale, and the Mobile TV -supporting handset is going for a stiff $549.99 sans contract, or $299.99 after giving away your cellular soul for two years and waiting anxiously for a $100 mail-in rebate to arrive. Check out our hands-on gallery to see if you're really ready to make this kind of commitment. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T launching 10 channels for AT&T Mobile TV tomorrow on LG Vu and Samsung Access

The long wait for AT&T's new mobile TV service, appropriately dubbed "AT&T Mobile TV," will soon come to an end. As expected, the new AT&T Mobile TV service is set to launch on May 4 (tomorrow) with 10 full-streaming TV channels. But, there's a catch.
