  • Apple To Adopt Intel's Ultra Mobile Platform

In a week that saw a legal settlement shut down one Apple rumor site , AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is going to adopt Intel’s Ultra-Mobile PC platform for future devices. The Menlow platform (by the way if you’re looking for a great discussion of the Menlow platform listen to Sierra’s explanation of it on this week’s GBM Podcast ) has been touted since this year’s Intel Devleoper’s Forum and is what a lot of folks are pinning their hopes on for the future of small mobile devices. I don’t know that this is earth shattering news, given Apple’s move to Intel for most of its line, but for all of those watching the mobile space and wondering what Apple’s next big move will be it certainly is intriguing if it is more than a rumor. • TechRepublic's 10 Most Important Business Technology Products of 2007

It is the seaon for Top 10 Lists, that’s for sure. I always find them interesting to read becuase largely they contain the same things. For example, I don’t think we’ll see a Top 10 list in 2007 without the iPhone at the top this year. Jason Hiner of TechRepublic has published his 10 Most Important Business Technology Products of 2007 and it is a good roundup. (He also has a Top 10 Technology Belly Flops list as well.) Interesting to note: Vista and Mac OSX tied at number 7, Outlook 2007 came in at number 3, and the OQO Model 02 came in at number 2. Number 1? You guessed it. • Orb to be available for iPhone, Touch

If you aren't familiar with Orb Networks , you should be. Orb gives you the ability to access all of your music, photos, and other media over the Internet while away from home. And it does it for free. Orb already works on a variety of devices, including laptops, Tablet PCs, and most phones. As an added feature, if you have a TV tuner or PVR on your home computer, you can also stream video from your TV tuner, much like the Slingbox does. The interface is very simple. On the iPhone it works through the browser and will access your Winamp setup at home, giving you access to all of your tunes. If you have succumbed to the iPhone as so many have, then you should check out the video at YouTube to see how well this appears to be working. This kind of activity is commonly called "place-shifting" where you can do something while away from home that you would ordinarily do at home. I think more and more people are doing place-shifiting activities whether they know it or not. And with applications like Orb, it's getting easier every day. via The Register Technorati Tags: Orb , iPhone , place-shifting , Slingbox Can your PC keep up? • Robert Cringley's Thoughts On An Apple iTablet

The Apple / iTablet rumor mill buzz has never been at such a high pitch than what it is right now. With Macworld coming up next month, we can only expect the noise to get much more intense. PBS.org's Robert Cringley penned a great article on why he think's Apple is indeed coming out with iTablet, and it is based on some quite good reasoning. Here is a snippet along with a link to his full article . Thanks for the link, Loren . The next logical WebKit product for Apple, it seems to me, is a much larger version of the iPod Touch. It would be Apple's first tablet computer and, while they'll still claim it runs OS X, Apple WON'T call it a Mac. I'm not the only person thinking like this. Here's more from an old friend who is much smarter than me. He sees an Apple tablet coming in January for five simple reasons: 1) Because MacWorld in January is when Apple stuns the world with improvements and innovations. A well-designed tablet could be a great innovation. An SDK for February 2008, not for just iPhone but for multi-touch devices in general, including a newly available iTablet-- that would be stunning. 2) Because a multi-touch tablet would provide a patent-protected interface for a new class of communication and computer device that Microsoft and its hardware partners would be hard-pressed to clone. The question now is does one get a Mac or a PC? There would be no PC analog to a well-designed Mac tablet, so if an iTablet is compelling, the question then becomes more like, when can I get one? • Touchscreen iMacs Now Shipping

No, they're not from Apple. Troll Touch , a Southern California company, has announced that they're shipping touchscreen iMacs. You have the option of buying it already updated or sending them your existing iMac and having them do the upgrade after the fact. System prices for the new iMacs are of course not cheap, starting at $2299 for a 20 inch, 2.0 GHz with touchscreen. You get a major discount if you provide the iMac for modification, obviously. They are also offering the 24" iMacs in the touch version. Apparently the technology "just works." In related news, the ModBook also appears to be shipping now, although the website is a bit vague and no one seems have ever seen one in the wild. So, if you are a die-hard Mac fan, it appears that you can satisfy both your desktop and portable touch/pen computing needs now, albeit through third party vendors. The big, unanswered question is still - when will Apple join the party? • A Geek Weekend at the Kitchen Table

I’m been without my voice, suffering from laryngitis since last weekend. On top of that it was a crazy week at work, so I got no rest on that side of my life. (I secretly think my staff likes it when I can’t speak.) But, my staff came to the rescue and stepped up to give me the weekend off from the theatre to rest my voice. The timing was excellent on a number of fronts. I could sure use the rest. My wife and I are searching for a new car purchase. And I had a number of geek and gadget projects to work through this weekend including setting up a new iMac, updating the Sprint (HTC) Mogul, and getting a printer hooked up for the Asus Eee PC. We don’t have a large apartment (life rarely gives us time there) and so when I’m geeking out, I’m usually working at the kitchen table, or setting in my easy chair. This weekend’s projects took over not just the kitchen table, but also the kitchen. Setting up a new iMac The biggest of these projects was setting up a new 20” iMac for my office. I lugged the box home on Thursday after it arrived and got down to some work with it on Friday night. I’ve been contemplating this move for my office desktop computing needs for some time now and since the newer iMacs are now starting to show on the Apple’s refurb list, I thought I’d take the plunge. So far, my theory that I can run whatever desktop apps I need from seems to be holding. Why buy a Windows only machine when you can run both Windows apps and Mac apps on the same machine through virtualization? I’m using a combination of Boot Camp and VMWare Fusion for these needs (Thanks to Marc Orchant for some tips on this) and that is working quite well. I also think that rumor or not, we’re heading to some sort of new Apple mobile device sooner rather than later, and I need to get prepared for that eventuality. Also of note, I installed Vista Ultimate on the iMac and opening up Windows Journal (yep it is there and opens) it is interesting to scribble in Journal with a mouse. I may have to pick...
  • An iTablet in January 2008?

Ok, before anyone goes crazy, let’s consider the source here. Appletell is linking to information from LoopRumors , and that name alone should make anyone pull out their skeptic hat. But it is a Friday, it is December, and let’s take a look at the speculation shall we? LoopRumors is reporting that Apple will unveil an Apple iTablet that will be an entirely new class of device, aimed at those who arleady have a Mac. It will have its own variant of Leopard, geared to the features of the device. Other info says it will contain a solid state drive, a mini-DVD reader (interesting), and get this: users supposedly will be able to interact with the devcie using both sides of the Tablet. Of course it would have multi-touch capability as well. LoopRumors is leaning on a January 2008 release , most likely at MacWorld. Again, keep your skeptics hat on, some, all, or none of this may be as real or imagined as the rendering accompanying this article. But we’re hearing more and more about an Apple Tablet surfacing in January. I’d love to see it come true, especially if it is along the lines of the companinon devcie this new speculation seems to suggest. That would go well with the new iMac I just bought for my office. • Multi-Touch and Apple

PC Joint has uncovered an Apple patent application regarding Multi-Touch . What really caught my eye was this description from Apple: Identification and classification of intuitive hand configurations and motions enables unprecedented integration of typing, resting, pointing, scrolling, 3D manipulation, and handwriting into a versatile, ergonomic computer input device. PC Joint gives a good list of scenarios based on how this new Multi-Touch would look on a potential Mac Tablet, including: Have to write or draw something? Just pretend you hold a stylus or pen in your hand and start writing/drawing. If that is still not good enough, pick up the real stylus and start writing with it. • GBM InkShow: Touch on a MacBook? Let's See....

Apple Tablet PC rumors have been brewing for years, but they have hit their peak over the past several months with hints that Apple has something in the works, and the latest rumblings about Asus confirming that Apple is working on something. Whether it is touch or touch + ink or nothing at all remains to be seen. That said, Warner posed an interesting question to me several weeks back wondering if Leopard was poised for touch, and how the current features "stack" up. Having been a Mac user for quite some time, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the things Apple is doing with Leopard that just might show where they could be headed. Also in that light, I take a look at some user experience issues that would need some serious attention if touch were enabled on Leopard. It goes without saying that if Apple were ever going to do touch on a MacBook, it would need to be optimized in some major areas. I don't "touch" on InkWell in this InkShow since I don't have a Wacom tablet, but based on this video from Loren Heiny , a lot of work would need to be done in the recognition and 3rd party software department, too. Microsoft holds a tremendous lead over Apple in the whole recognition area, so it wouldn't surprise me to see Apple leave InkWell alone, and soley concentrate on optimizing the touch experience. • Nobody Wants Tablet PCs (?!)

So claims Mitch Wagner over at InformationWeek . Obviously I completely and totally disagree, but it disturbs me that someone thinks that Tablet PCs are so completely useless. He goes on to claim that Apple would not release a Tablet PC because there is no reason for it - " It's not a product that makes sense ". He does have one valid point: The real problem with notebooks isn't the keyboard, it's the weight and bulk. A tablet PC is just as bulky and heavy as a notebook, and less usable. There's no real benefit to 'em. As we've discussed here in the past, the bulk and weight of many Tablet PC designs can be a real turn-off, although I take issue with the "less usable" part of the comment. I'm not sure why adding features would make something less usable, and many convertible Tablet PCs just add a swivel hinge, a digitizer, and a pen and call it good. I'm not saying that is a good design ethic, but these are additions, not subtractions, so they shouldn't reduce usability. There's some active discussion going on over at Information Week, so stop by and add in your $0.02. • Mac Folks Talking About the Rumored Mac Tablet

This is good stuff. The folks at MacMost.com produce a daily Vlog, and their topic today was the much talked about Apple Mac Tablet rumor . It is great to hear some Mac enthusiasts talk about Tablet PC technology, the cool things you can do with it, and how they'd like to see it in a Mac. Sounds like a ringing endorsement of the past five years to me!
