  • Unlock your AT&T Tilt 8925 to work on any GSM network - Turn your AT&T Tilt into an HTC Kaiser TyTn II

While HTC Kaiser TyTn II owners are enjoying the ability to surf any GSM network in the world, AT&T customers with a brand-new AT&T Tilt 8925 are stuck with the AT&T-flavored GSM network. Nevermind that HTC has been sued over the lack of a graphics hardware driver , a problem which also afflicts the HTC Kaiser TyTn II. HTC sells their mobile phones unlocked out of the box, but AT&T locked the GSM radio in their version of the HTC Kaiser - until now. XDA-Developer forums user, jockyw2001, has posted instructions on how to fully unlock ( SIM unlock ) your AT&T Tilt 8925 to work on any GSM network in your country. And, if you need to travel abroad and your AT&T Tilt doesn’t like to play nice on foreign networks, jockyw2001 has posted instructions to make that happen as well ( SuperCID ). Head on over to XDA-Developer forums to get your hands on the AT&T Tilt unlock and SuperCID solutions . • IntoMobile's 3G vs EDGE webpage load-time shootout - just how slow is the iPhone?

Right, we all know just how much faster 3G data speeds are in comparison to EDGE speeds. Theoretical speeds are one thing, straight-up throughput numbers are impressive, but what about the most important aspect of any device’s wireless data connection - actual web-browsing performance? Unless you’re one of the harder-core mobile warriors that uses their mobile phone as a wireless modem (tethered to a laptop), chances are your cellphone’s data connection is predominantly used to serve up webpages on your handset’s display. So, just how much faster does a 3G data connection allow you to surf the web? Or, conversely, just how much does the iPhone’s EDGE-only data connection slow down the web-surfing experience? (Hint: not that slow) Well, we set to find out exactly what kind of load-times you can expect in real-world situations and with real-world devices. For this test we used an AT&T Tilt 8925 ( HTC Kaiser TyTn II ) on AT&T’s 3G network, and squared it off against an Apple iPhone on AT&T’s EDGE network. Webpage load-times were the focus of this test, and load-times were rounded down to the nearest second. Load-times were recorded from the moment the page started to load until the status-bar indicated that the page was finished loading (until the progress indicator-bar disappeared). Hit the link for the video. Hypothesis : Webpage load-times are bottlenecked by the device’s processing power and page-rendering technology. This should result in similar load-times between the iPhone and the Tilt. Results : What we found was completely expected. There’s more at play then just throughput. The iPhone’s web-kit based Safari browser allowed it to load pages almost as fast as the AT&T Tilt. We used the Pocket Internet Explorer that comes pre-installed on the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional-based AT&T Tilt - and it proved to be the device’s downfall. Both devices had similar processor speeds, so...
  • No-name firm files suit against Apple and other handset makers for patent infringement

In our land of the lawsuit-friendly legal system, it’s no surprise that we’re hearing of another no-name company coming out of the woodwork with a patent-infringement case. The latest patent-infringement suit comes from Delware-based AutoText Technologies. A 32-page complaint was filed against 23 companies that AutoText Technologies claims infringed on a 1994 patent for a computer-based transcription device. Apparently, the AutoText patent covers any device made in the US with a display, keyboard, storage for vocabulary, and method for sorting keywords by frequency. Apple has been named in the suit for infringing on AutoText Technologies with Mac OS X Tiger, the Safari web browser, and related products. Other high-profile companies named in the suit include HP, IBM, HTC, Motorola, Palm, Microsoft (for its Windows Mobile 6 OS), and carriers like AT&T, Helio, and Verizon. Game console manufacturers Nintendo and Sony have been named in the suit for their Wii and PlayStation 3 systems, respectively. AutoText Technologies is seeking a a minimum of a royalty from each company and is seeking damages. Good luck, AutoText. We don’t have high-hopes for your case - we’re thinking you might get a settlement out of some of the bigger players. But, that’s what you were going for in the first place, wasn’t it? • Microsoft launches System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 - pushing mobile enterprise mobile to the edge

So, we’re here at CTIA San Francisco 2007 and the first thing on our agenda was the Microsoft launch luncheon (try saying that three times, fast). Here’s what they’ve got planned… In keeping with the Microsoft’s expertise in enterprise mobile solutions, Microsoft has launched their first “dedicated mobile device management server” - Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. And, to help roll-out device compatibility with the Mobile Device Manager, Microsoft has teamed up with AT&T and Sprint to bring Microsoft has keyed in on the business customer’s needs beyond the realm of simple email, contact management, and calendar sync-ing. They’re leveraging the Windows Mobile platform to bring a new level of integration and user-level management to the enterprise IT professional. With features like over-the-air application delivery and secure VPN connectivity, the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 aims to ensure that fleet-management of Windows Mobile devices maintains “end-to-end data integrity” as well as providing secure access to corporate data - in other words, Windows Mobile device fleets can all be updated and synchronized with ease and allow user-corporate VPN connection under the watchful eye of the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Center 2008. IT heads will be happy to hear that the new Mobile Device Center will employ an “always on” connection - affording them the control they need to maintain and ensure fleet integrity. Should the “always on” connection drop-out, Microsoft’s “fast reconnect” technology gets the user securely back online without having to re-authenticate. And, if the IT department sees a problem with any device in their fleet, System Center Mobile Device Manager provides the IT Administrator with the power to lock down a specific handset - they can disable Bluetooth, SMS/MMS, WLAN (WiFi), InfraRed, POP/IMAP...
