If you still haven’t upgraded your AT&T 8525 to the newer Windows Mobile 6.0 ROM, you still have time - luckily. You see, HTC and AT&T offered up the free upgrade for AT&T 8525 customers, with the caveat that the ROM would be taken offline on February 1. So, if you’ve been lagging on bringing back your device’s fresh and clean (install, that is) feeling, you just lucked out. It seems the download deadline has been lifted. In our land of the lawsuit-friendly legal system, it’s no surprise that we’re hearing of another no-name company coming out of the woodwork with a patent-infringement case. The latest patent-infringement suit comes from Delware-based AutoText Technologies. A 32-page complaint was filed against 23 companies that AutoText Technologies claims infringed on a 1994 patent for a computer-based transcription device. Apparently, the AutoText patent covers any device made in the US with a display, keyboard, storage for vocabulary, and method for sorting keywords by frequency. Apple has been named in the suit for infringing on AutoText Technologies with Mac OS X Tiger, the Safari web browser, and related products. Other high-profile companies named in the suit include HP, IBM, HTC, Motorola, Palm, Microsoft (for its Windows Mobile 6 OS), and carriers like AT&T, Helio, and Verizon. Game console manufacturers Nintendo and Sony have been named in the suit for their Wii and PlayStation 3 systems, respectively. AutoText Technologies is seeking a a minimum of a royalty from each company and is seeking damages. Good luck, AutoText. We don’t have high-hopes for your case - we’re thinking you might get a settlement out of some of the bigger players. But, that’s what you were going for in the first place, wasn’t it? So, we’re here at CTIA San Francisco 2007 and the first thing on our agenda was the Microsoft launch luncheon (try saying that three times, fast). Here’s what they’ve got planned… In keeping with the Microsoft’s expertise in enterprise mobile solutions, Microsoft has launched their first “dedicated mobile device management server” - Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. And, to help roll-out device compatibility with the Mobile Device Manager, Microsoft has teamed up with AT&T and Sprint to bring Microsoft has keyed in on the business customer’s needs beyond the realm of simple email, contact management, and calendar sync-ing. They’re leveraging the Windows Mobile platform to bring a new level of integration and user-level management to the enterprise IT professional. With features like over-the-air application delivery and secure VPN connectivity, the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 aims to ensure that fleet-management of Windows Mobile devices maintains “end-to-end data integrity” as well as providing secure access to corporate data - in other words, Windows Mobile device fleets can all be updated and synchronized with ease and allow user-corporate VPN connection under the watchful eye of the Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Center 2008. IT heads will be happy to hear that the new Mobile Device Center will employ an “always on” connection - affording them the control they need to maintain and ensure fleet integrity. Should the “always on” connection drop-out, Microsoft’s “fast reconnect” technology gets the user securely back online without having to re-authenticate. And, if the IT department sees a problem with any device in their fleet, System Center Mobile Device Manager provides the IT Administrator with the power to lock down a specific handset - they can disable Bluetooth, SMS/MMS, WLAN (WiFi), InfraRed, POP/IMAP...

We thought it would never happen. After missing rumored launch dates left and right , AT&T has finally set a launch date for their AT&T Tilt. It looks like AT&T is going to be offering up the US-spec HTC Kaiser TyTn II as the AT&T Tilt (without the front-facing camera) on October 5. The No. 1 wireless carrier will be asking AT&T Tilt hopefuls for $299.99 (and a 2-year contract) in return for all that 3 megapixel camera, 3G HSDPA, GPS, WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, microSDHC (compatible with microSD cards up to 32GB), QWERTY-keyboard (with the cool tilting screen), and Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional goodness. It should be pretty obvious why we call this thing the “ holy grail ” of smartphones - a “superphone” if you will. We’re really closing in on AT&T’s launch of their own-branded version of the hotness that is the HTC Kaiser TyTn II P4550 . Following on the heels of that AT&T Tilt mockup picture, we have real, live shots of the “holy grail” - snapped in the wild. The AT&T Tilt is looking mighty fine with it’s AT&T branding taking the place of that forward-facing video-call camera. Props to Mobility Today for getting their hands on these live shots of the HTC Kaiser in it’s AT&T-guise. Oh, and it looks like the AT&T Tilt is posing with the Verizon UTStarcom VX6800 and Samsung SCH-i760. Right, hybrid keyboard/keypad setups are nice and all, but we’re eyeing that US-spec Kaiser pretty hard. It’s just too bad that AT&T is going to miss their September 25 launch due to “network certification” issues.
