  • Bell reels in HTC 5800

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Bell Mobility , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Canada and the US regionals are now officially pwning Sprint and Verizon on this one. Bell becomes the latest carrier to offer the Windows Mobile 2006-based QWERTY slider -- Libra -- as the HTC 5800, offering EV-DO, a 2 megapixel cam, stereo Bluetooth, tethering capability, and microSD expansion. Come on Verizon , we're getting impatient! Grab it now north of the border for a nice, round $149.95 CAD (about $141) on a three-year agreement. • Alltel launches HTC PPC6800

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Alltel , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Gee, Verizon, go ahead and take your time there, will ya? Alltel follows up Sprint to become the second network in the US to launch HTC's next-gen CDMA Windows Mobile 6 Professional handset (Alltel's site claims it's Windows Mobile 5, but we're not believing that -- check the screen shots), offering WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, 2 megapixel cam, and just about all the EV-DO you can handle as the HTC PPC6800 . Grab it for $549 off contract, or $249 after two-year agreement and a $100 snail mail rebate. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Qwest picks up HTC S720 as "Fusion"

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA If our brief time with the GSM variant (the S710 Vox) is any indication, Qwest subscribers should be pretty freakin' stoked about this. The regional carrier has just picked up HTC's S720 Libra, the CDMA radioed version of the manufacturer's slide-out QWERTY smartphone rocking Windows Mobile 6 Standard. The naming is a little confusing -- Qwest calls it the "Fusion HTC 5800" -- but whatever they want to call it, it's pure gold by HTC and Windows Mobile standards. The spec sheet tells of a 2 megapixel cam, A2DP, microSD expansion, and EV-DO all packed into a pleasantly compact (we know from our experiences with the Vox) shell. Grab it now for two bills on contract. [Via Phone Scoop ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint's roadmap for remainder of '07 outed, too?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , LG , Motorola , Palm , Pantech , RIM , Samsung , Sanyo , UTStarcom , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Following a thorough run-through of Verizon's plans for the rest of the year, this broader peep into Sprint's near future than we've seen before -- if real, anyway -- means that we now pretty much know everything there is to know about the wide world of CDMA here in the States for the next few months. It's a warm, fuzzy feeling, ain't it? Anyway, let's have a look: Palm is said to come swinging in with two, the 500 on the low end with a $99 price point on October 14 and an 800w ("w" stands for Windows Mobile 6 here, friends) up top -- though the latter doesn't grace shelves until Q1 of '08. Novatel gets down with an updated version of the U720 dubbed U727 (what else?) come September 30. Sanyo meanwhile should add the S1 candybar to replace the SCP-4930 on October 14, but November 4 is allegedly when things really start to heat up. That day should bring the LG LX260 , RIM BlackBerry Pearl 2 , HTC Vogue , and the UTStarcom PX-00, a low-cost Rev A data card to replace the PX-500 . The Motorola Q9c -- possibly with GSM international roaming -- should drop by a little later in November, while a dual-mode CDMA / GSM rendition of the Samsung BlackJack replaces the IP-830w early next year. Again, this is all unconfirmed, but it seems plausible enough. We'll throw up any corroborating info as we get it. [Via Slashphone ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint event showcases CDMA Touch, LG Rumor, and more

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , LG , Palm , RIM , Samsung , Sanyo , Sprint-Nextel , Verizon Wireless , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA If you've been patiently awaiting details about, well, a whole slew of handsets, chances are that a recent Sprint event held the answers to a-many of those very questions. First up was the Palm Centro (also coined Gandolf and Treo 800 ), which you've already seen plenty of earlier today . Moving on, the Sprint Touch (read: CDMA ) was said to be rockin' a potent 400MHz CPU, and it also touted EV-DO, 128MB of RAM, a two-megapixel camera, built-in GPS "to be activated in a Rev A upgrade," and a likely launch date in November. Furthermore, an EV-DO BlackBerry Pearl was on display along with a "petite candybar" from Sanyo, the sliding LG Rumor, and the Sprint Airave home cell site (once known as the Samsung Ubicell ). We know you're craving the dirt on all of the aforementioned gizmos, so be sure and hit the read link for the full skinny. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Verizon's roadmap for remainder of '07 gets liberated

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , LG , Motorola , Others , Palm , Samsung , UTStarcom , Verizon Wireless , Palm OS , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA phoneArena scored a wealth -- nay, a veritable cornucopia of information detailing Verizon's releases for the rest of 2007, and we can say with some confidence that there's something in here for everyone. Starting with smartphones, SMT5800 , XV6800 , Samsung i760 , and Motorola Q9m should hit in October, October, September, and August (yay, this month!) respectively. A second, business oriented variant of the Q9, dubbed the Q9c, will follow on in the fourth quarter. If Windows Mobile ain't your cup of tea, have a gander at the Palm Treo 755p and RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 (pictured), both coming in November. There isn't much to say about the 755p that hasn't already been said, but the 8130 is indeed a Pearl of the "new" variety , upping the cam to 2 megapixels while adding A2DP and a 3.5mm jack. Turning to dumbphones, Verizon's got the full spread from low to high end. The Samsung U410, self-branded CDM-8630 and LG VX8350 all appear to be pretty simple flips coming some time this half of the year. The Motorola Z6c looks to be a MediaFLO-less version of the Z6tv slider; the former drops in November while the latter is nebulously scheduled for the second half. Finally, the fancy U700 and U900 flips from Samsung offer 2 and 3 megapixel cams, respectively, and will both be available before the year's out. Whew! • Telus Windows Mobile 6 update for P4000 is live

Filed under: Software , HTC , Telus Mobility , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA The wait is over patient Telus P4000 users, the Windows Mobile 6 update is here. After seeing the recent flow of HTC updates , it is grand to see a provider on top of its game and delivering the goods in a timely manner. The update process is well documented and even includes the steps and numbers needed to reprogram your phone's settings via Over-The-Air Service Provisioning (OTASP) once the update is in. Of course, if you've never flashed your handset before, know that all contents of your handset are wiped during the process, so back up any important stuff before you get started. Hit the read link to begin the quest to Windows Mobile 6 glory. [Via PocketPCThoughts ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Verizon preps for launch of UTS XV5800?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , UTStarcom , Verizon Wireless , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Is Verizon having a busy summer ? We guess it depends on who you ask . For some, the time for the HTC Vox (aka UTStarcom XV5800 ) finally hit the hands of employees last week and the device should be available for sale sometime in August. All the stats remain the same like a Qualcomm 7500 series EV-DO Rev A chipset and a 400MHz processor. The only thing we noticed was the change for internal storage which is claimed to be 162MB, which sounds a little strange to us. Let's hope that Big Red can pull this one off in time for Labor Day. • Bell Canada releases "HTC 6800"

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Bell Mobility , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Bell Canada has finally shipped HTC's beastiest, beast as the HTC 6800. This is, of course, the same goods shipped by both Sprint (branded as Mogul), Telus (as P4000), and the oft-promised Verizon VX6800, but unlike Telus, it rocks WIndows Mobile 6, not 5. This'll go out the door from a Bell shop for as little as CAN $199 -- that is, if you're crazy enough to commit for 3 years -- with a minimum monthly package purchase. This is hands-down Bell's best Pocket PC offering, so if you've been dawdling and contemplating stepping up to Windows Mobile, now's the time. • HTC Vogue sees FCC approval

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA Thanks to the characteristically loose-lipped folks at the FCC, it looks like HTC's making good on the rumor that a CDMA rendition of the Touch was in the pipeline. The "Vogue" has just gotten hooked up with regulatory approval, and though the documentation is kept to a bare minimum, we've already heard enough to suspect that Qualcomm's pride and joy (CDMA, that is) will be the lucky recipient of a TouchFLO -enabled handset in the not-too-distant future. Where the Vogue is ultimately headed remains to be seen -- but it could be argued that both Sprint and Verizon are in pretty desperate need of a smartphone lineup overhaul, so by all means, bring it on. • HTC preps a few more models (hint: CDMA Touch!)

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA HTC's model naming convention has always been just a little tricky to commit to memory, and with this latest batch, it certainly ain't getting any easier. A couple of these we've heard about before -- namely the Nike , Kaiser , and Shangri-La -- but the rest are brand new to us and very exciting. First up, the S640 "Iris" is a CDMA rendition of the Excalibur and Cavalier , tossing in EV-DO rev. A and WiFi atop Windows Mobile 6 Standard. The "Vogue" is essentially a Touch (TouchFLO UI and all) with the same EV-DO rev. A guts as the Iris -- good news for Verizon and Sprint customers, we'd imagine. GSM users have reason to celebrate here too, though, in the form of the "Volans" and "Polaris." These two are upgrades to the Vox and Artemis , respectively, adding in much-needed 3G radios and faster processors. Finally, the P6550 "Sedna" appears to be some sort of industrial device with support for a credit card reader -- though with a 3 megapixel cam and 3G data, we wouldn't mind having one ourselves. Release dates are up in the air on most of these, but our money is on late '07. [Via The Boy Genius Report ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint Mogul review roundup

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Sprint-Nextel , Windows Mobile , 1xRTT , EV-DO , CDMA We thought the Sprint Mogul was a little bit of alright , but do the 'nets agree? By and large, yeah, it seems the bottom line is that this is the must-have upgrade for PPC-6700 owners. Mobile Tech Review points out that MMS client is notably missing and picture quality on the 2 megapixel camera could be better, but hey, it's still an improvement over the Apache's 1.3 megapixel unit. Boy Genius Report found that the ridges on the phone's posterior were a little funky, too; just like the Mogul's crazy bright yellow UI, it's probably an acquired taste.
