  • $5,000 reward for working HTC Kaiser video driver

    It looks like HTC Kaiser users over at the xda-developer forums have really put their money where their collective mouths would be. In response to HTC’s veritable cold-shoulder response to the HTC Class Action Organization’s petition for updated video drivers for HTC smartphones using the Qualcomm MSM7500 and MSM7200 chipsets (which includes the HTC flagship smartphone, the HTC Kaiser), the group of enthusiasts has put up a $5,000 reward for anyone that is able to craft their own homebrew video driver that is capable of boosting the devices’ video performance. Actually, the bounty for a working video-acceleration driver is set at $5,199.5. Instead of looking towards buying future HTC smartphones with better graphics performance (as HTC would have them do), these guys are taking matters into their own hands. Keep in mind that the HTC Class Action Organization also put up a $3,000 reward for a working video driver - to no avail. If you’ve got the time and know-how to get a working video driver that takes advantage of the Qualcomm MSM7500 and MSM7200 chipsets’ ATI Imageon hardware, there’s a good chunk of change waiting for you.   • HTC: Our devices are fine the way they are, buy new devices if you want better graphics

    There’s nothing like a bit of class-action to goad a corporation to respond to allegations of wrong-doing. In response to claims from the HTC Class Action Organization that HTC devices using Qualcomm’s MSM7500 and MSM7200 chipsets didn’t perform as well as they could in terms of graphics acceleration , HTC has issued a public statement: “HTC believes the overall value of its devices based on their combination of functionality and connectivity exceeds their ability to play or render high-resolution video. These devices do still provide a rich multimedia experience comparable to that of most smartphones and enable a variety of audio and video file formats” It seems that HTC believes that their devices have delivered on exactly what they promised - which doesn’t include stellar graphics performance that leverages the ATI Imageon hardware lying dormant inside certain HTC smartphones. We’re sure HTC customers don’t exactly see it that way. Furthermore, HTC says that they have: “Plans to include video acceleration hardware in future video-centric devices that will enable high-resolution video support.” In other words, HTC smartphones have delivered on their advertised performance. If you want better graphics performance, you’ll just have to buy a new HTC smartphone. Now, if we were HTC, we might just cough up the necessary cheddar and give our customers what they want. Otherwise, there may be less customers willing to buy the next-generation of graphics-powerhouses from HTC. Even if HTC is the cat’s meow of Windows Mobile smartphone manufacturers. Hey HTC, do what’s right and make use of that ATI Imageon hardware. There are a lot of pissed off customers out there that are swearing to never touch HTC hardware ever again.   • HTC Class Action Organization sues over software inadequacies, offers $3,000 reward for a fix

    Our favorite Windows Mobile smartphone manufacturer has landed itself in a bit of hot water. We can’t imagine that this class-action lawsuit will have little more effect than to convince HTC to release some updated firmwares, but it’s still a bit off-putting to see our dear HTC in legal trouble. You see, there’s this class-action lawsuit that was filed against HTC, complaining that HTC failed to provide support for a particular graphics driver. The resulting lack of software has led the plaintiffs, the HTC Class Action Organization , to claim that their Qualcomm MSM7200 and MSM7500 chipset-based smartphones are getting out-performed by older HTC models as well as competing handsets. Apparently, the Qualcomm MSM7200 and MSM7500 chipsets include ATI Imageon hardware, but HTC overlooked the necessary driver to enable hardware graphics acceleration. Even the HTC flagship, the TyTn II (aka HTC Kaiser/AT&T Tilt 8925), has been listed as one of the afflicted devices. The HTC Class Action Organization has even put up a $3,000 reward to anyone that comes up with a software solution to the graphics-performance-issue. We’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out. If we were HTC, our end-game would be to quietly roll out that darn driver and appease the 4,000-strong group of disgruntled HTC smartphone customers.
