  • China finally awards 3G licenses, winners no surprise

Filed under: China Unicom , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA , China Mobile If you thought Vodafone or Telefonica would somehow emerge as a big winner in China's 3G spectrum launch... well, yeah, think again. China Mobile , China Unicom , and China Telecom have now been armed with licenses for TD-SCDMA , WCDMA (UMTS and HSPA that is), and CDMA2000 / EV-DO, respectively, meaning the world's largest carrier will be rolling out China's homegrown 3G standard -- not to say Unicom's or Telecom's footprints will be anything to sneeze at, either. In fact, in the long term, it's suggested that Unicom and Telecom will actually be able to grow faster since they're using standards that other countries have actually heard of, but for the next few years, Mobile's still the safe bet if you absolutely, positively must have the most insane Chinese coverage available. • AT&T slowing EDGE to force customers to switch to 3G?

Filed under: ATT , EDGE , HSDPA Been holding on to that now-antique EDGE device to keep from extending your contract with AT&T? Well, if you've been experiencing some sluggishness -- and not just general EDGE sluggishness, mind you -- you might have more to blame than just those recent outages . Open for Business reports that AT&T has been quietly lowering EDGE signal strength to give more 3G love to all you iPhone 3G and Bold users. To add to the shadiness of the situation, AT&T reps are all offering up the same solution -- buy a 3G device. Unsurprisingly, AT&T's Mark Siegel has denied Open for Business's claims, and says that the mega-carrier is not requiring anyone to switch to a 3G phone. We'll put on our Sherlock Holmes outfits and try to do some digging, but it's not like we actually expect these guys to admit to a move that would definitely lead to a lot of backlash. • China starts to look into that whole 3G licensing thing

Filed under: HSDPA , UMTS , HSUPA It's a damn shame they had to be all reactionary about it instead of getting the ball rolling on this years ago, but China is just now expected to start awarding 3G licenses to carriers who'd like to save their subscribers from the horror of the General Packet Radio Service. The nation's regulators are apparently being spurred to action by the flagging economy, hoping to give the wireless industry a swift kick in the pants by sending a few massive next-gen build-outs into action. The government is hoping for an investment on the order of $29 billion to get things underway, but screw the shot in the economic arm -- we just want us some high-speed data. • T-Mobile likely to skip HSPA+, head straight to LTE

Filed under: T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Misc , HSUPA , LTE When you know what's just around the bend, biting on the best the world has now is that much more difficult. Just ask T-Mobile International, who told Unstrung at the World Telecoms Conference in London that it would probably bypass the whole HSPA+ thing and look straight to LTE . More specifically, CTO Joachim Horn noted that "if I need to invest into more hardware, I think it's better to start early [with LTE]. LTE is a more future-oriented technology." He did admit that T-Mobile would "deploy HSPA as long as there is no hardware replacement necessary," but that means the current 3G network would only ever hit 14.4Mbit/sec (at most). Interestingly enough, Horn also showed interest in TD-LTE, which China Mobile is currently backing as a migration path from TD-SCDMA . At any rate, T-Mob users should probably hope LTE gets here in a hurry, particularly now that you know what you're waiting for. • T-Mobile boosts 3G coverage ahead of G1 launch

T-Mobile USA announced Friday that it was expanding its 3G network coverage, broadening its UMTS/HSDPA footprint in advance of the Oct. 22 of the G1, the first phone running on Google's Android OS. The carrier, which has lagged behind the other incumbent wireless carriers in 3G deployment, said its network had gone live in Sacramento, Calif., this week. It also said coverage would be coming to Memphis, Tenn., and Tampa, Fla., next week and to Washington, D.C., and its surrounding metro area in November. There has also been a slight semantic change to T-Mobile's rollout. When the operator announced an aggressive rollout of UMTS/HSDPA into new markets earlier this fall, it said it would have coverage in "27 markets" by year's end, and now declares that it will be operating in "120 cities" by the end of the year. • AT&T and Option launch USBConnect Quicksilver

Filed under: Peripherals , Others , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA AT&T and Option jointly announced the launch of one of the world's smallest HSPA USB devices today, the USBConnect Quicksilver. The latest in the carrier's line of LaptopConnect devices, this mobile broadband unit weighs just 1.2-ounces and can roam (for a price, of course) in more than 150 countries, with 3G available in over 60. Best of all, this USB modem actually looks halfway decent for the fashionistas that care, boasting an "intelligent" protective cap and a mildly curvaceous flair. Oh, and did we mention that it's available today at no cost if you ink your name to a two-year DataConnect plan of $60 or more? 'Cause it is. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • US 3G version of LG's KC910 pops up, speculation abounds

Filed under: Handsets , LG , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Based on what we've learned about LG's KC910 (or the Renoir, as it's affectionately known), we had all ideas it was being reserved for corners of the globe not named USA. But after taking one look at the specifications on the outfit's Global web portal, we're beginning to have second thoughts. Granted, this whole thing could just be a copy and paste blunder, but the 8-megapixel cellie sure shows up as having support for 850/900/1800/1900 GSM bands. Everything else looks par for the course, but we'd be lying if we said we weren't a wee bit excited about the possibilities here. Hold tight -- we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more details. • ASUS-built O2 Xda Zest gets official, barely detailed

Filed under: Handsets , ASUS , O2 , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Sure enough, the ASUS-built O2 Xda Zest is more than just a figment of someone's imagination, though speaking of imaginations, we simply can't hear this phone's name without thinking about the soap. Sorry, just can't do it. All that aside, the handset has finally made its way onto the carrier's "Coming Soon" page, where we're told that it will include Windows Mobile for opening up Office documents, a 3-megapixel camera, 3G, WiFi, 356MB of internal memory and a microSD expansion slot. Looking for more? Strap yourself down and wait until November, vaquero. [Via CoolSmartphone ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
