  • HTC's Android-driven Dream revealed in glorious spy photos

Filed under: Handsets , Features , HTC , T-Mobile , Android digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/HTC_Dream_Googlephone_first_pics'; Sure, we've seen some blurry videos and a few stolen glimpses when Andy Rubin demonstrated this beast, but now we've gotten our hands on a slew of pictures showing off a very real T-Mobile-branded Dream in all its Android-running glory. Not only does this confirm the design spied in those FCC docs as well as show off that nearly-done version of Android, but it seems to confirm the fact that this will be headed to T-Mobile, and sooner rather than later judging from the looks of the above device. Needless to say, our inner-geeks are completely geeking out right now. Hit the gallery below for a handful of other views of the phone. [Thanks, Michael] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • New York Times: T-Mobile to sell HTC Android phone as early as October

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/HTC_s_Google_phone_hitting_T_Mobile_by_Christmas'; Here we go folks. The New York Times is reporting that T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer Android . According to "people briefed on the company's plans," the HTC phone will go on sale in the US "before Christmas, perhaps as early as October." The NYT's sources also say that the 5-row QWERTY slider from that Dream video (embedded after the break) matches the HTC device that T-Mobile will sell. The device is still waiting for FCC approval with a three-way Google, T-Mobile, and HTC announcement coming as early as September should the feds complete there testing in time. The deal is expected to be exclusive making it the only Android phone available in the US this year. Of course you know what this means? It's the birth of the Android fanboy -- sure you love 'em at First!, but then they never shutup about Street View . • Video: Google demos the HTC Dream at I/O conference

Filed under: Handsets , Announcements digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Google_demos_the_HTC_Dream_at_I_O_conference'; Word on the street is that Google just busted out a live demo of the oft-rumored HTC Dream doing its Android -flavored thing at the company's I/O conference in San Francisco. Reports tell us that the device is a roughly 3-inch by 5-inch touchscreen phone with a slider keyboard. Not a lot is known right now, though apparently the device packs an accelerometer which allows you to tilt the unit to scroll across Google Maps or Street View. A video is on the way, so stay tuned for more information (and images) as we get them. Update: Video after the break! • HTC's Dream again rumored to be first Android phone

Filed under: Cellphones , HTC , Android We've been hearing about the HTC Dream (likely not pictured above) for what seems like an eternity on a tech timeline. Now "a person close to the situation" tells InfoWorld that the Dream is indeed HTC's Android phone. Remember, HTC is widely expected to be the first from the gate with a retail phone featuring Google's open source OS. The Dream is said to measure 3-inches wide by 5-inches long and feature a full QWERTY keypad that "either slides out or swivels." Right, exactly what Forbes told us 5 months ago . Still, it's always a good sign when the rumor mongers align. Whatever happens, we certainly expect the first Android phone to be exceptionally spec'd as a showcase of the OS' power and possibilities to come. • Samsung wants Android phone by next year

Filed under: Samsung , Android Welcome to the party, guys. Actually, Samsung was already a member of Google's Open Handset Alliance -- so a welcoming committee really isn't necessary, and it comes as no surprise that the company has now gone on record saying that it wants an Android phone on the market in early 2009. If anything, it's a little surprising they're waiting so long, considering Samsung's tendency to crank out new models at a largely unrivaled pace -- and also considering that several of the company's existing handsets already include Google functionality of various sorts out of the box. • Official: Google's quest for 700MHz is so on

Filed under: Misc Hear that America? That's the sound of the hammer dropping on our beloved cartel of carriers. Google's bid for the 700MHz "C Block" is on, and they're doing it without any bidding partners. Eric Schmidt, Google Chairman and CEO, says the following: "We believe it's important to put our money where our principles are. Consumers deserve more competition and innovation than they have in today's wireless world. No matter which bidder ultimately prevails, the real winners of this auction are American consumers who likely will see more choices than ever before in how they access the Internet." The bidding begins on January 24th with a minimum of $4.6 billion required for the open-access C Block. Wake the kids, phone the neighbors, it's going to get ugly fast. • WSJ: Google to join 700MHz auction party today

Filed under: Misc The deadline for declaring an intent to bid on that sweet, sweet 700MHz spectrum in the US is December 3rd. According to the Wall Street Journal , Google will announce their intent , today. Hear that Verizon? All your legal posturing and lobbying to block the Open Access (only to about-face with talk of your own openness ) seemingly have been for naught. Now it's time to put up or shut up in what's estimated to be a very costly bidding war for the prime "C" block swath in January. • More details from Google's Android press release

Filed under: Software We're probably going to be hearing a lot about Google's Open Handset Alliance and Android mobile phone software platform in the days to come, but the official press release contains quite a few things to chew on while we wait for the deluge. The big dogs in OHA appear to be Google, T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm and Motorola, but the list of companies that have joined the group is insanely long -- we're counting 33, and that's just the companies who've joined as of today. Notables include Intel, LG, Samsung, Sprint Nextel, KDDI, Broadcom, Marvell, Texas Intruments, NVIDIA, and, randomly, eBay. Equally interesting are the prominent absences from the list -- it looks like Nokia, Microsoft, AT&T, Verizon and Softbank aren't in on this party just yet. • Somebody, please get Eric Schmidt an iPhone

Filed under: ATT , Apple Ok, imagine this for a second. You're Eric Schmidt -- head of the most powerful internet company in the world, worth $4.8 billion dollars, member of Apple's board of directors... and you don't carry Apple's new cellphone. So what's a brother got to do to get a friggin iPhone ? Check this: Walt: "... Steve was flashing his iPhone around. I held it for 20 minutes." Eric mentions he hasn't held it, and doesn't have one. Walt: "Your a member of Apple's board! Eric: "No...I'm still waiting for mine." So either Eric still has his iPhone in pocket-stealth mode, or Steve's totally stiffing his bud down in Mountain View -- we're bummed either way. P.S. -Walt asked about the Google phone , which Eric non-denial denied exists . Instead Eric just talked about phones, platforms, application layers, partnerships with KDDI, LG, Samsung, etc. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Google cooking up more apps for the iPhone and other details

Filed under: Software , ATT , Apple So The Seattle Times got a sit down with the rather guarded Glenn Lurie, AT&T's man on the ground for the iPhone . While he didn't give much up in the way of the phone's finer details, he did have one takeaway that left us interested. When asked about the mass skepticism over the iPhone's price, he replied "... There are other things -- you have the widgets, some of the Google applications that are coming -- there are just so many things here that the price will not be an issue." Now, we don't want to get all weird here and read tea leaves, but he did say Google applications (as in plural), so we think it's safe to say Google has more planned than just Gmaps for the iPhone. We wouldn't be surprised to see a Google news reader, Gmail, or even Gcal apps on there, but given the fact that Apple already has its own agenda for mail, calendaring and the like, it might stand to reason the iPhone won't be locking its users out of 3rd party add-on apps after all. Another interesting detail: "people are going to be asked to have an unlimited [data] package" with the iPhone. Hm, no surprise there. Ok, discuss / argue amongst yourselves. • Google Phone launching end of 2007?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Google_Phone_launching_end_of_2007'; The on-again , off-again Google Phone rumors just got a healthy stir by Digitimes. The Taiwanese tech rag says that HTC is building the phone with initial shipments set to hit by the "end of 2007" -- globally in 2008 -- citing "handset component makers" as their source. The phones will feature Texas Instruments' 3G platform with EDGE and of course built-in G-Mail and Google Maps. Unfortunately, they will not be GPS enabled. The handsets are also said to sport both Google and carrier branding with "sources" claiming that European's Orange might be the first carrier to see the hotness. Digitimes doesn't have the best track record with rumors so please everybody... exhale and let's wait for secondary confirmation.
