  • Rumor Mill: T-Mobile will launch an Android phone when it debuts 3G

More rumors are circulating about T-Mobile USA's UMTS rollout. The company has been offering 3G service in New York since March and has said it will launch additional markets throughout 2008, ending the year with 3G coverage in 20 to 25 core markets. Last week we heard that the firm had launched 3G in Chicago, but the carrier would not comment on that report. Now comes speculation that T-Mobile USA will debut 3G in 20-plus markets on Oct. 1 and it will introduce the HTC Dream smartphone, which many believe will use the Google Android operating system, as one of its first 3G phones. The launch of the first Google Android phone would give T-Mobile some much-needed buzz as it rolls out UMTS. T-Mobile spent more than $4 Billion on AWS spectrum in 2006, which gives it the ability to roll out UMTS in several markets nationwide. • Google considering 3G GPhone solutions - could we see a 3G Google Phone from HTC?

We’re all eagerly awaiting Google’s entry into the mobile phone market. The near-mythical Google Phone (or GPhone, if you will) has spurred rumors and speculation from the get-go - and it looks like the rumor mill has been cranked back up. Grapevine news has Google considering a 3G solution for the GPhone. We initially expected Google to go with an EDGE radio from Texas Instruments (TI) for their Google Phone, but they’re now said to be looking into 3G data speeds. We’re still looking for HTC to handle the manufacturing of the GPhone, but we might even see a Google-developed OS to go heads-up with Windows Mobile and Symbian (not to mention Linux) platforms. A Google-branded Google Phone, made by HTC, rocking 3G and running Google Mobile? That would be a nice sub-$100 surprise indeed. • Google now mulling 3G for gPhone

Although Google remains mum on the subject of its much-rumored branded handset, Digitimes reports the search giant is in the process of finalizing the device specifications, operating system, manufacturing contractor and operating partners, citing sources inside the Taiwan handset maker community. While most insider buzz has speculated the so-called gPhone will boast an EDGE solution developed by Texas Instruments, Digitimes says Google is now mulling a 3G handset with a chipset developed by Qualcomm. However, should Google opt for the 3G option, the change in platforms and related licensing issues would likely delay the gPhone launch until the first half of 2008, as opposed to its anticipated late 2007 debut. HTC is tipped as Google's manufacturing partner thanks to its expertise in ODM and brand business as well as its carrier relationships. Digitimes ads Google is still considering development of its own OS.
