  • UPDATE: Street View and Walking Directions come to Google Maps for Mobile

Not yet available for Windows Mobile smartphones, today Google launched a new version of Google Maps for Mobile with the same street-level imagery as available available on desktop. Furthermore, Google's new Maps for Mobile features walking directions (beta) which I wrote about some weeks ago and which Google recently recently launched on desktop. Last but not least, Google Maps Mobile also features to help you search for and get to businesses and locations. You can now read business reviews, so you'll know if it's actually worth driving across town to that store. Finally, Google hopes we'll notice significant improvements in search speed with this version, as well as better location accuracy in all versions thanks to this week's My Location update. • SERVICE: Google introduces Mobile Search with My Location for Windows Mobile

Previously, when you went to google.com from your Windows Mobile phone's browser and performed a local search, the results were tailored to the last location you entered. Now, using the Gears Geolocation API, Search with My Location approximates your actual location using the same Cell ID technology used by Google Maps Mobile. So if you want to find sushi nearby, just type "sushi" and Google will return local business listings around you. If you want to know the forecast, type "weather". If you want to search somewhere else, specify a location in the query like "pizza Kansas City". [ Permalink ] (c) 2008 by the::unwired - All Rights Reserved

HTC just send out a press information where the Taiwanese smartphone manufacture confirmed that it's still on plan and and in time for its first Google Android smartphone launch. HTC replied to a report from Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research who recently said that HTC is "having structural problems to incorporate Google's demanded feature set" and HTC is "demanding a guaranteed minimum revenue surety from Google", from which Chowdhry concludes that "Probably HTC does not think there will be enough demand for GPhone". • MAPPING: Google releases Google Maps Mobile 2.2 with Transit Directions

A few weeks ago the Google Mobile team released Google Maps Mobile with Transit directions for BlackBerry and Java-based handsets. But now, with the release of Google Maps Mobile v2.2, Google also released Transit directions for Windows Mobile (Professional and Smartphone 5.0 or later) or Symbian S60 (3rd edition or later) smartphones as well as added other improvements to its latest Google Maps Mobile client. Transit directions on works by brining up Directions from the main menu and you'll see a second tab labeled called "Transit" or "Public Transport", where you can request a route using only public transportation. You'll receive a number of alternatives that take you (car-free) to your destination. [ 2 Comments ] [ Permalink ] (c) 2008 by the::unwired - All Rights Reserved

While it's not yet clear why Google want to use Tele Atlas maps for Google Maps and Google Mobile, it could be an indication that Google wants to join the GPS navigation area as well. While real Windows Mobile 7 information are still in the dust, Kevin Chen, HTC's General Manager for MEA and CIS is quoted that HTC plans to release its first Windows Mobile 7 smartphone at Q1 next year. That's at least what PhoneReport says, which had the chance to chat with Chen during the HTC Touch Diamond launch event in South Africa. • COLLABORATION: Opera to extend (Google) Gears to Desktop and Mobile Devices

Opera Software announced today it will support (Google) Gears in its desktop and mobile browsers (which includes Opera Mobile for Windows Mobile as well). • UTILITY: Google releases Google Search Windows Mobile plug-in

A few weeks ago, Google launched a mobile plug-in for Symbian devices that put a Google search shortcut onto the phone's home screen. This shortcut reduces the time it takes for you to get answers from Google by eliminating the initial search steps like finding and starting the web browser and navigating to Google.com before entering your query. The same plug-in has been available for BlackBerry devices since last December and today Google made it available for Windows Mobile devices too. Basically it's quite similar to Microsoft's original Windows Live search plug-in as available for Windows Mobile. [ Permalink ] (c) 2008 by the::unwired - All Rights Reserved

  • RELAUNCH: Google Mobile now combines Web, Images Local Business and News results

Google has revised its mobile portal for smartphones which now combines results from web, images, local business directories and news searches in one page. Google believes that users searching on a mobile phone are more likely to be looking up snippets of information, such as football scores or directions, rather than conducting in-depth research and the search company has tailored its mobile results to suit this requirement. This means that searching for specific terms now provides links to photos of the terms as well as web pages - as Google said today. [ Permalink ] (c) 2008 by the::unwired - All Rights Reserved
  • SOLVED: Gmail's IMAP finally works proper with Windows Mobile [UPDATE]

Following earlier user reports that the IMAP issue with Windows Mobile and Google's Gmail seems to be solved, Google has now confirmed it has fixed a problem that was causing Windows Mobile phone users to receive blank Gmail messages. In October last year, Google began supporting IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) for Gmail. That means messages that mobile users send or receive from their phones are synched with their Gmail accounts, appearing the next time users access their accounts from the web or any other IMAP E-Mail client. But shortly after the announcement, Windows Mobile users began complaining in online forums about problems. [ Permalink ] (c) 2008 by the::unwired - All Rights Reserved
