  • Velocity Mobile's WinMo-powered 103 handset splashes down in FCC's database

Filed under: Handsets , Others , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE If you thought Velocity Mobile just rolled over and died after showing off a few handsets at CTIA earlier this year, you'd be exactly wrong. The outfit's Windows Mobile-powered 103 has just surfaced in the FCC's lair, giving us a smidgen of hope that a US release is but moments / weeks / months away. Unfortunately, this filing doesn't spill the beans on any other specifications, but the 67 page User Manual does dive into great detail on changing the battery, inserting microSD cards and navigating around within the operating system. C'mon Inventec, give us the good stuff. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Pantech C530 pops up in FCC, likely AT&T bound

Filed under: Handsets , Pantech , ATT , GSM , EDGE Pantech has an awesome habit of delivering a handful of fairly anonymous devices to AT&T -- C810 WinMo dual slider notably excepted -- and judging from what little we can gather in the test reports, we've got another one on the way. AT&T-bound models from the Korean outfit start with "C" (an homage to Cingular, no doubt) and this one fits the bill with GSM / EDGE on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. Other than that, though, your guess is as good as ours -- it seems pretty wide, though. A QWERTY piece, perhaps? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Samsung launches plain M150

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , GSM Frequent web browsers, email checkers, and game players need not apply for Samsung's latest, the rather simple SGH-M150. The dual-band candybar does manage to pack Bluetooth and an integrated FM radio, but you're certainly not going to find anything approximating 3G here -- and the 160 x 128 display and VGA cam aren't exactly barn-burners, either. It'll be available in German starting next month in a selection of five colors with other markets coming online shortly thereafter. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • HTC Diamond firmware enables 850Mhz support - New HTC Diamond radio ROM does 850Mhz

The one thing keeping the HTC Diamond from sweeping across America as the next big competitor (and a capable one at that) to the iPhone 3G is the HTC Diamond's lack of support for the 850Mhz GSM frequency band that us Yankees love to use. Sure, 850Mhz has better penetrating power than the higher frequency [...]
  • T-Mobile stores don't have the Sidekick 2008 yet, but Craigslist does

Filed under: Handsets , Sharp , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , EDGE Want one o' them fancy new 2008 model Sidekicks before the kid down the street? Of course you do, and if you've got a particularly fat wallet on hand, you might just be able to hook that up. Some mysterious individual has popped up on Craigslist of all places, offering a prototype Gekko -- though it's "n0t [sic] f0r [sic] sale unless a Big [sic] Offer [sic] c0mes [sic]." Gotta pay to play, as they say, though you'd better get on this sweet little deal before Danger smokes out the profiteer. [Via Hiptop 3 ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Tony Hawk Sidekick LX now available to everyone

Filed under: Handsets , Sharp , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , EDGE Feeling a little left out, non-T-Mobbers? Keep your chins up, because the Tony Hawk cut of the Sidekick LX is now available to each and every one of you after a limited release exclusively to current subscribers (not the first time they've engaged that tactic). Expect to shell out $299.99 on contract after rebates for the privilege of being just as cool as your favorite skateboarder -- just don't go trying your luck at the half-pipe now, you hear? • Unofficial Touch Diamond ROM magically unlocks GSM 850

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE We'd given up any hope of the Touch Diamonds out in the field ever being completely function on North American networks; the lack of 3G sucks enough as it is, but the mysterious absence of GSM 850 was the final slap in the face. xda-developers has taken its usual no-mountain-too-high approach, though, and has somehow managed to uncover and enable GSM 850 capability lying dormant in the Touch Diamond's circuitry. Granted, you'll still be poking along at EDGE speeds at best, but at least you'll be doing so in a wider swath of the colonies. [Via wmpoweruser.com ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • BlackBerry Bold gets priced on T-Mobile Germany

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Sorry, T-Mobile yanks, this one actually goes out to your German cousins; we still don't have a Bold commitment stateside from anyone other than AT&T. It's cool, you've got the WiFi Curve , remember? But yeah, back to T-Mobile Germany for a second -- those guys have become the first anywhere to slap a price tag on RIM's latest and greatest, charging €219.95 (about $348) on the carrier's Max S plan and going down from there if you want a heftier voice / data package. T-Mob claims that interested parties will see the Bold pop up in July, which should give you enough time to pick out a nice, rugged case . • Samsung's i900 Omnia launching next week in Italy

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS If you've had your eye on Samsung's forthcoming Omnia , you've known good and well it was coming to Europe sometime this month. Thankfully, Sammy has removed the mystery by announcing that Italy will get first dibs when it launches in said country on July 22nd. We aren't told who will be second, third or last, but most major European locales should have it before September dawns. Obviously, prices will vary depending on operator and contract terms, but the 8GB edition (along with an Xbox 360 Arcade, as part of some random promotion) will reportedly be €499 ($789) without subsidy. Glean from that what you will. [Via phoneArena ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Gekko is the Sidekick 2008 after all, launches July 30

Filed under: Handsets , Sharp , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , EDGE Never before have we dealt with so much naming drama leading up to a new Sidekick's release. Gekko , Gecco , Aspen , Sidekick 2008 , the list of candidates goes on, and we finally have a winner: Sidekick 2008 it is ! The name comes courtesy of some new internal documentation for T-Mobile reps, which also reveals that the low-end piece will be available come July 30 (seemingly putting the kibosh on Best Buy's July 27 date ) with interchangeable shells , a 2 megapixel cam, and a 2.6-inch WQVGA display that'll definitely be a nice bump up from the iD's specs. • Rogers announces $30 smartphone data plan

Following on Rogers' attempt to appease the disgruntled iPhone 3G masses with a generous $30 data plan, the Canadian GSM carrier has announced that it is extending the more-reasonably priced data plan to all its smartphones. Rather than opting to brave continued criticism over their data plan offerings, Rogers will be giving customers 6GB of [...]
  • Meizu M8 finally launching in August?

Filed under: Handsets , Others , Windows Mobile , GSM The saga of the Meizu M8 is one of the more entertaining dramas in the phone biz these days, owing partly to the endless delays and tweaks, granted -- but owing much more to the truly masterful ripping of the iPhone's industrial design. Unfortunately, there's been very little actual bite to follow up the bark coming out of the Meizu camp, and it looks like we might get a real taste of this thing for the first time as soon as next month. A post on Meizu's website, seemingly from none other than CEO J. Wong himself, claims that a first cut of the M8 will arrive next month -- along with plenty more pictures and details -- but it'll be a somewhat neutered rendition that features just 128MB of RAM and zero flash. October will bring the real deal, a 256MB baddie that rocks 8GB of storage for 2180 yuan, which works out to about $320. Meanwhile, pictures have surfaced of the latest prototype floating around Meizu's labs, looking both as slick and as litigation-prone as ever. Bring these stateside, Mr. Wong, and we'll be the very first to sign up -- just don't be surprised if Apple is right behind us.
