  • Hands-on with Modelab's Hummer and Levi's handsets

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Others , GSM , EDGE We've seen both the Levi's and Hummer sets over the last few months, but haven't had opportunity to talk to the gents over at Modelabs or get a chance to see them in real life. While we weren't able to glean too much new info, we did hear that they do hope to see these things land over here but not with a carrier, these will simply be sold as unlocked handsets -- potentially through Hummer dealers and Levi's stores. Specs are sketch, but we do know neither sports 3G, WiFi or other high speed access technologies. Build quality is very nice on both handsets, but the Levi's set is actually pretty fantastic, we're not big on the Levi's branding, but the screen and device materials are jaw-droppingly fantastic. We only say the black iteration of the Levi's set, but the Hummer branded phone comes in yellow, and dark and light camo. Pics are just below. %Gallery-13467% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • iriver says iPhone-like interface just proof of concept

Filed under: Handsets , GSM We hit the show floor excitedly looking for iriver's GSM phone which they showed off earlier in the week, but when we got to their booth, the little guy was nowhere to be found. We managed to wrangle a chat out of some of the company's product designers and marketing people, and they explained their hesitation at continuing to show the W7-***-GSM-phone due to the similarities of the phones UI to an all-too-familiar device. According to the iriver people, the iPhone-like interface which was showcased originally was only meant to demonstrate what the phone was capable of, not a finalized version of the OS. Of course, it's little consolation to us, having seen a brief snippet of the phone, though we're assured that some new hotness -- or hot newness -- is on the way from the cats in Korea. • Hands-on with Samsung and Bang & Olufsen's svelte Serenata

Filed under: Handsets , Features , GSM , EDGE , UMTS We bumped into the Bang & Olufsen Seranata at Samsung and were sure you'd all love it's crazy design. This has been around for a while now , but it was our first opportunity to get our hands on it. First impressions? Impressive! The feel of the handset is total money, hefty, amazing material choices, and that wheel is almost addictive when you spin it. We popped it open and blasted some tunes and the quality really was good for such a small set, though it is definitely form over function here. We want, right now. %Gallery-13385% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Samsung surprises on the last day of CES with the SGH-F490

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Looks like the folks at Samsung woke up on the right side of the bed this morning, and decided to gift us all with the SGH-F490. This handsome prada-esque set features full screen browsing on its 3.2 inch screen in both landscape and portrait mode, 5 mega pixel camera, 3.5 mm audio jack, 130 MB of internal storage, and memory expansion via microSD. The disappointing bit is that we're only getting tri-band GSM / EDGE and HSDPA in the European 2100 MHz band. Price is set for for about 530 (roughly 780) and is expected to ship in February. • Hands-on with Qualcomm's Snapdragon-powered "Anchorage"

Filed under: Handsets , Others , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We sat down with one of Qualcomm's fancy new reference designs today, the Anchorage QWERTY slider phone. Let's be perfectly clear -- the Inventec -crafted device won't ever see the light of day in this exact form, Qualcomm just needed some eye candy with which to demonstrate its new Snapdragon platform. The chipset features a highly specialized and customized ARM-based core and graphics from ATI -- both actually licensed this time around, we're told -- and tries to take advantage of as many technologies that Snapdragon offers as possible: MediaFLO support, blazing clock speeds (1GHz to be exact), high resolutions (SVGA here), and the list goes on. Snapdragon-powered devices should hit retail from HTC and Samsung by the end of the year. Click on for pics, just don't get too attached since this is as close as you'll ever get to it, alright? %Gallery-13248% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Palm's GSM Centro spotted in white

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Palm OS , GSM Yeah, there it is, a shiny white Palm Centro in a booth for all to see, I'm sure Palm will be ever so delighted about this. Apparently an accessory vendor put it out to display some of its wares on the show floor and the gents at TreoCentral were there to catch it live. Adding insult to this slip up is that fact that the handset is a GSM model that you see there my friends, and interestingly it is different then the AT&T branded Centro we saw a while back. More on this as soon as we can get our grubby mitts on it. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia 3555 breaks cover at CES

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Nokia , ATT , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , UMTS Every once in a while -- and when we say "every once in a while" we mean "quite often" -- a major manufacturer's booth will feature a totally unannounced device tucked away in some dark corner without an announcement, without fanfare, and without reason. This time around, Nokia takes the honor with the 3555, a low end 3G piece that the FCC tells us will hit both AT&T and T-Mobile at some point down the road. The particular example shown at Nokia's CES booth here was unbranded, so we don't know what bands lied under hood, but it's cool that someone besides some sterile FCC lab gets to touch it finally. We guess. %Gallery-13172% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • iriver 3-inch touchscreen "GSM phone" headed for the States

Filed under: Handsets , GSM Iriver 's been pushing out all sorts of product at this year's CES, but this is the biggest surprise from the company yet. The "iriver GSM phone" is an iPhone-esque handset featuring a 3-inch 480 x 272 touchscreen, and a Linux-based UI that is practically mimics the iPhone feature for feature. The actual hardware is quite similar to iriver's own W7. According to PC Mag, the phone has 4GB of flash storage, Rhapsody and other media support, a two megapixel camera (with video, take that Apple), Adobe Flash support, GPS and mobile TV. While it's unclear what sort of wireless options this has, like WiFi or 3G, and what carriers will support it, iriver has committed to bring this to the States. Iriver's Owen Kwon promises the phone will be "more affordable" than the iPhone, but otherwise there's no other info on release. There's video of the phone after the break. • Hands-on with Neonode's N2 in new colors and a peek at the booth

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Others , GSM , EDGE Neonode have busted onto the CES scene with a monster booth, new colors for the existing N2, new prototype devices, and whispers of a 3G N2.5 or 3. Now all we have to do is wait for the carrier to get announced and hear word on pricing. We're looking forward to how things roll out for them over here. %Gallery-13128% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Hands-on with Moto's new W230 and W270 handsets

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Motorola , GSM We've already posted about the two Moto show stealers at CES, we figured that the W230 and W270 deserved their 15 minutes of glory as well. While definitely not loaded to the teeth with features, these will both make great low-cost options. Follow the link for the goods. %Gallery-13107% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Hands-on with FIC's OpenMoko-powered FreeRunner

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Others , Linux , GSM , EDGE So this is a really early version of the FreeRunner , but mad love to FIC for bringing it out for us all to play with nonetheless. The first thing you'll notice is that it's still sporting its predecessor's "Neo1973" branding, an indiscretion we were promised would be put to bed prior to the scheduled spring launch to OpenMoko's developer community. Anyone used to toting a smartphone of average size could totally get used to carrying the FreeRunner around, which we think is probably key to the device's success outside the enthusiast community. The current build of the software, though, is another matter entirely -- it's in a pretty raw alpha state right now and hugh swaths of core functionality appear to be missing. Then again, they've got a few good weeks until spring, and even then the FreeRunner will find its way into hackers' hands before the masses; they've got some solid-feeling, solid-spec'd hardware here and we're still really hopeful that the final product is going to rock. %Gallery-13092% Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • LG shows a KS20 clone with WiMAX

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Windows Mobile , GSM Looks like a KS20 , does it not? Ah, but looks can be deceiving! Gearfuse says this bad boy has been gutted to use WiMAX in addition to GSM, a combo that won't likely be welcome on Sprint's XOHM network. Here's where it gets interesting, though: an LG rep went on record saying that it would be a pretty trivial matter to swap out the GSM silicon for CDMA, which would make Sprint far warmer to a hookup. The same cat went on to say that they'll be doing seamless handoff between WiMAX and GSM / CDMA networks, which is going to be a pretty critical feature as XOHM builds out -- a buildout that could take many, many years. LG, Sprint, let's make this happen, k? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
