  • Sony Ericsson's TM506: T-Mobile AWS 3G support included

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , UMTS When Sony Ericsson's TM506 was leaked earlier this month, there was no mention made of the flip's support of AWS 3G . Thankfully (thankfully!), the official launch brings along confirmed support for the protocol. SE is linking up with T-Mobile USA once again, providing a stylishly small handset that sports a 2-megapixel camera, built-in A-GPS (TeleNav), stereo Bluetooth support, an M2 card slot, multimedia playback, outer / inner displays and 9.5-hours of GSM talk time (250-hours on standby). Curiously, no price is mentioned, but you can find out for yourself when this lands in stores early next month. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Sketchy claims, pictures of first AT&T Touch Pro emerge

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA With all the Touch Diamond / Touch Pro news surfacing for these US CDMA carriers, quite a few AT&T subscribers are beginning to get restless. Calm down, folks -- it seems the AT&T Touch Pro is a reality waiting to happen after all. Based on some admittedly dodgy claims and even dodgier photographs, one particular soul has apparently paid $900 for a pre-release Touch Pro with North American 3G . Only time will tell if he got duped, but we're going to believe that AT&T wouldn't let this gem pass it by for too much longer until proven wrong. • Telstra gives data users more megabytes for same dollars

Filed under: Telstra , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Misc Oh sure, Telstra's Next G HSDPA network is pretty swank , but what's the use in having a potent high-speed infrastructure if it's too expensive for anyone to use? Thankfully, said carrier is finally loosening up a bit on its data pricing by giving Aussies more megabytes for the same price that they're currently paying. Starting now, $10 mobile data packages include 150MB per month (up from 20MB), while the $29 pack includes 300MB per month (up from 80MB). Additionally, excess data rates have been "reduced" on both packs, though dollars and cents weren't mentioned on that. Best of all, customers already subscribed to one of the aforesaid plans won't have to do a thing in order to see their capacities bumped. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • HTC Touch Diamond finally gets FCC approval with US 3G HSDPA support!

Well that sure took a while. As the rest of the world had the honor of being part of HTC’s launch markets for the up and coming HTC Touch Diamond, the US has had to wait for HTC to push their US-spec HTC Touch Diamond through the FCC. The HTC Touch Diamond already passed [...]
  • Nokia's North American E71 now available at Chicago flagship store

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA Call it a hunch, but you shouldn't have to wait too awfully long (like, hours / days / weeks ) to secure Nokia's North American E71 today. Said handset is now available at the company's flagship store in Chicago, complete with a QWERTY keyboard and US-friendly 3G. Eager to grab one? Total cost will be $483 plus a roundtrip ticket to Chi-town, considering the store won't ship to out-of-towners (or so we hear). [Via IntoMobile ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • T-Mobile's entire 3G lineup gets handled

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Samsung , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , UMTS T-Mobile's still doing its darndest to keep its fragmented 3G network launch on the DL -- the carrier can't deliver a wide footprint just yet, and it look like it doesn't want to put customers under the false impression that it can. A great way to make sure no one cares about your high-speed handsets is to make sure they're all totally anonymous, low- to midrange devices with minimum shelf appeal, and what can we say, T-Mobile? Mission accomplished! PC Magazine has devoted some quality time to checking out all four of the 3G models currently offered -- the 3555 and 6263 from Nokia along with the t819 and t639 from Samsung -- and it looks like they've managed to develop a really potent power user repellent with the lineup. The 6263 scrapes by with the most generous review of the review, but even it is hampered by a lack of HSDPA (meaning 3G data's capped at a theoretical 384kbps) and a measly 1.3 megapixel camera. Clearly, T-Mobile wants these phones viewed in exactly the same light as the remainder of its consumer-class models, and we'll give 'em that much, they've done a bang-up job in that regard. Maybe too good, in fact. Read - Nokia 3555 Read - Samsung t819 Read - Nokia 6263 Read - Samsung t639 Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T launches BlackBerry Bold promotional site

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS See that image above? Yeah, that's a sexy new side angle of RIM's BlackBerry Bold , and it's coming to us courtesy of AT&T. Just as Sprint did with its fashionable Instinct , AT&T is launching a promotional site for the forthcoming BlackBerry in order to drum up interest and get you (re)informed. Straight from the carrier's mouth, we've got GPRS / EDGE / UMTS / HSDPA support, integrated WiFi / GPS, 480 x 320 resolution display, a side-loaded memory slot, 1GB of built-in storage, a 624MHz CPU, 128MB of Flash memory, Bluetooth 2.0 with handsfree support and up to 5-hours of GSM talk time (13 days in standby). You'll notice that the operator makes no mention of an exact release date, but we're crossing our fingers and sticking to that leaked July timeframe until we hear otherwise. • China Mobile opens "experience shops" as TD-SCDMA softly launches

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Others , Samsung , GSM , Misc , China Mobile We knew good and well China Mobile was all geared up to launch its homegrown 3G standard in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou and Shenzhen (among other locales), and though China's government hasn't issued 3G licenses yet , TD-SCDMA has finally made its soft launch. In order to garner interest in the service, said carrier has also opened up "experience shops" in the aforementioned cities "to allow the public to experiment with TD-SCDMA handsets and gain confidence with TD-SCDMA's capabilities." During the initial launch, some 60,000 dual-mode TD-SCDMA / GSM handsets and 15,000 data cards will be on sale in these outlets, with most of the units being in the "mid- to high-end range" and costing between $286 and $572 (those are subsidized prices). Here is where we suppose China Mobile holds its breath and hopes for things to take off. [Via mocoNews ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • China to issue 3G licenses, calls for Unicom / Netcom merger

Filed under: China Unicom , GSM , CDMA , Misc , China Mobile This just in: don't believe anything you hear regarding an official 3G rollout date in China. After quite a bit of rigmarole , the Chinese government has finally announced that it will issue a trio of 3G licenses. Notably, the announcement comes with a bit of baggage -- it's also calling for a merger between China Unicom and Netcom, two of its four biggest telecommunications providers. Furthermore, it stated that it would call on China Telecom, the nation's largest fixed-line carrier, to "purchase Unicom's CDMA network." Unfortunately (though not unexpectedly), there's no time frame given for implementation, but some analysts are asserting that "a full launch of 3G services is [still] years away." Baby steps are better than no steps, we reckon. [Thanks, James] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T's 3G comes out on top in speed tests, will only get faster in 2009

Filed under: ATT , Sprint , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EV-DO , HSDPA , Studies , CDMA , Misc , HSUPA , LTE The folks over at Computerworld just ran the current 3G providers in America through their paces, only to discover that AT&T came out on top in almost every category. Well, it appears the monolithic telco plans to keep its edge (er...) on the competition -- by upping its HSPA service to a whopping 20Mbps come 2009. Our main man Ralph de la Vega said that the process wouldn't require a major overhaul to the provider's infrastructure, and that they're already working on punching up the current 3.6Mbps speeds to 7.2Mbps "in the labs." Apparently, this won't stall plans for forthcoming 4G / 700MHz / LTE service from the company -- it'll just be icing on the cake. Read - Which 3G network is the best? • Motorola L800t gets FCC blessing on way to China's TD-SCDMA

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , GSM , EDGE Remember that rumored L800t that got outed as part of Motorola's Asian lineup for '08 not long ago? We still can't really confirm that it's called the L800t, but we can confirm that the device itself is real thanks to an FCC approval -- and really, that's all that matters, isn't it? This unassuming candybar should mark Moto's first foray into China's budding TD-SCDMA network that hopes to eventually blanket the country's metropolitan areas with a proprietary form of 3G. The next question, naturally, is why the phone has found its way into American labs when it'll be biding its time over in Beijing, and the answer is pretty simple: we've got EDGE data on the 1900MHz band here, so theoretically, it could be used (with reduced performance) in the States -- just don't expect any high-speed action out of it. • T-Mobile admits that 3G iPhone will be tested in Austria

Filed under: Handsets , T-Mobile , GSM , UMTS , Apple , OS X derStandard , the same publication that announced that the iPhone would be sailing into Austria via T-Mobile is now reporting that the same carrier will be testing the 3G iPhone in the aforesaid country. During a press conference in Vienna, T-Mo Austria reportedly affirmed that a UMTS version of Apple's handset would "soon be available," and that Austria would be the "testing ground" for the new mobile -- not to mention "among the first countries in the world with the UMTS iPhone." Furthermore, bigwigs stated that "more flexible" offers would be made available, but details beyond that were scant. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
