  • Nokia and AT&T announce 6555 3G flip

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS Hey, we'd been told we'd see this next month -- but who are we to complain when the phone fairy drops in a couple weeks early? Nokia and AT&T today have announced the immediate availability of the 6555 , a rather attractive flip -- "smoothback design," as they call it -- sporting UMTS, a QVGA primary display, microSD expansion in case the 30MB onboard ain't enough, and the full spread of GSM / EDGE bands for global dominance. It hasn't shown up on AT&T's site just yet, but we're told we can get it today for $49.99 on a two-year agreement. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Palm Treo 500 gets dressed for September 12 announcement

Filed under: Handsets , Palm , Vodafone , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS Okay, we suppose it might not be as silly looking as we'd originally thought, but let's be honest: would this be your first choice for a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device? Yep, that's right, we said " Standard ," meaning there's no touchscreen in the cards for Palm's latest and greatest device, a distinct departure from Treos of yore. So yeah, anyway, if this document turns out to be legit, the long-rumored Gandolf is going to end up christened as the Treo 500 when it's announced for Vodafone on the 12th . 3G data will thankfully be in tow, too, though there's no word on whether it'll be HSDPA or plain ol' UMTS. Not bad, but seriously, there are plenty of solid WM6 Standard handsets in the pipeline from manufacturers big and small. Best of luck, Palm. • HP introduces iPAQ 600 and 900 series Windows Mobile 6 phones

Filed under: Handsets , Windows Mobile , HP , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS In its fray of iPAQ introductions today come two new phones from HP -- the first since the rather bland 510 -- potentialy throwing the once-dominant Windows Mobile force back into the hunt. First up, the 600 series Business Navigator comes equipped with integrated GPS, a generous 2.8-inch touchscreen, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM, 3 megapixel autofocus cam, WiFi, and Windows Mobile 6 Professional, all sitting atop a Marvell PXA270 putting along at 520MHz. The 600 rocks a numeric keypad; a dealbreaker for some, yes, but the nifty touch-sensitive scroll wheel integrated into the keys may be enough to sway a few back. The 900 series, meanwhile, swaps out the numeric pad for a standard QWERTY outfit and steps down to a 2.46-inch display, but the specs remain otherwise similar to its stablemate. Look for both to ship before the year's out. [Via Phone Scoop ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia N95 for North America: get it September for $699

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Bet you didn't see that coming, did you? The shock of a real, honest-to-goodness N95 with North American 3G bands becoming reality (sorry, T-Mobile, not you!) is still wearing off, and now the company's spouting off about a September release for the darned thing. As we found in our hands-on , this particular variant of the S60 superphone gets tweaked just a bit from the original -- though not as much as the bigger-screened N95 8GB -- offering a redesigned, recessed camera lens (sans protective cover), twice the RAM, dimpled music control keys, and re-upped battery capacity. Nokia claims this very special version of the N95 was made in part because it's been "extremely pleased" with response to the European N95 in these parts -- so to everyone with an N95 in your pocket right now, thanks! As we mentioned, grab it starting next month through a variety of online retailers plus Nokia's flagship stores in New York and Chicago for $699. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia announces XpressMusic 5310 and 5610

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS Nokia has added two models to its music oriented XpressMusic series today. The 5310 candybar clocks in at just 9.9mm thick, offers 18 hours of music playback -- through the 3.5mm jack if you're so inclined -- a microSD slot supporting capacities up to 4GB, dedicated music controls, and a QVGA display for €225 (about $307) when it ships in the fourth quarter. Next up, the 5610 rocks a slider form factor and features a nifty slide navigation bar underneath the display, metallic and high-gloss finishes, a 2.2 inch QVGA display, 3.2 megapixel camera, microSD slot, and close to a full day of music playback for a tad more than its sibling, €300 (about $410), with a drop date also in Q4. • LG's KS20 ready for the suits with WinMo 6 and HSDPA

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Vodafone , GSM , GPRS , HSDPA Oi, say 'ello to 12.8-mm thin LG KS20 , the 3.2Mbps HSDPA cuz to their KU990 touchscreen hottie. Although the KS20 shares much of the looks of the KU990, they've actually trimmed back the display to 2.8-inches (compared to 3-inches on the KU990) while acing that 5.1 megapixel shooter for a skimpy, business-minded 2 megapixeler all riding atop a Windows Mobile 6.0 OS. Expected Q4 in Europe running on some of that Vodafone carrier action, at least. We'll be sure to get up close and personal with it at IFA later in the week if that's ok with you. Thought so. • LG's KU990 touchscreen "Viewty" is a 5 megapixel, HSDPA beauty

Filed under: Handsets , LG , Vodafone , GSM , GPRS , HSDPA , CDMA It's out. LG's newest heartthrob -- the KU990 -- is official and on the way to the UK (likely with Vodafone ) this fall. The German IFA show at the end of the month will mark its coming out party seeing the KU990 dressed up in a 5.1 megapixel shooter with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, image stabilization (likely digital), auto focus, 120fps video, and ISO 800 sensitivity. Sure, the camera is nice and all, but this pup is packing a 3-inch, 240 x 400 touchscreen riding on 3G HSDPA data. Hoozah! With a European launch imminent (Sorry, no Stateside details), the wait for the iPhone is suddenly less of a burden, eh? [Via Akihabara News ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia N95 with American 3G gets FCC'd!

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We're speechless. In fact, we think we might cry -- but rest assured, they're tears of joy. Rumors of a Nokia N95 packing American HSDPA have been spreading like wildfire as of late, and we're ecstatic to see that they were totally true. Though this sucker gets down with the 850 and 1900MHz bands, it doesn't get in on the 1700MHz action, suggesting that if the T-Mobile rumor is still true, this ain't it. Though arguably not quite as attractive as the decidedly non-US 8GB N95 in black that we saw this morning, this phone's innards are pretty much the most beautiful thing we've seen all day. Nokia, we turn the floor over to you to answer questions about pricing and availability. [Via Wirelessinfo.com ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

  • Danger Zante / Sidekick Slide in the wild

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , T-Mobile , Danger , GSM , GPRS , EDGE Boy Genius has scored some hands-on time with the undisputed hottest member of Danger's Hiptop lineup, the so-called "Zante," also known (as best we can tell, anyway) as the Sidekick Slide for T-Mobile. Sharp, we love ya and all, but we've got to hand it to Motorola for producing what looks to be a nice lil' device. Hit the link for the goods. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Vertu's 3G Ascent Ti hits FCC

Filed under: Handsets , Vertu , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS You've gotta give credit to Vertu for maximizing the life of its Signature and Ascent models by tweaking colors and precious metals ad nauseam, but at some point, you knew they had to just gut the thing and start anew. This here "Ascent Ti" just passed through the FCC, taking the Ascent formula and updating key specs to bring the luxury phone well into 2007. Namely, the Ascent Ti offers UMTS 2100 (for 3G data pretty much everywhere but here), a whopping 3 megapixel autofocus camera with flash, and what appears to be a well-updated, Vertu customized build of Series 40. No word on release date, but unless your last name happens to be "Rockefeller," you may need the time to save the dough anyway. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
