  • Vodafone gets the drop on Santa, announces Christmas lineup early

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , RIM , Sagem , Samsung , Sharp , Sony Ericsson , Vodafone , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA This may well be our first unofficial Christmas article, as Vodafone gets the jump on the holiday season with a sizeable list of new handsets for your enjoyment. The early launch features the new 8GB Nokia N95 , Samsung SGH-F700V (by the by, that V at the end there stands for "vroom vroom"), Sony Ericsson W910i , BlackBerry 8310 Curve, and the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl . On the "B" list we can expect two new Windows Mobile devices, six devices based on Series 60, six 3G devices from leading manufacturers, and three new Vodafone branded sets (Vodafone 920, 720, 810). The final items on the menu are 13 new HSDPA handsets, not bad huh? While the devices are lumped into all those categories above, the devices specific to each are not, but in no particular order we can expect the Sharp GX33 and 880SH, Sagem my850v Crystal and my411 Cv. More Samsung goodness will arrive in the form of the SGH-i640v and SGH-ZV60, Sony Ericsson's W660i and V640i, with the Nokia 6120c rounding out the show. Don't take our word for it, but it seems like Christmas may be a good time to hop on Vodafone. Check the gallery for the pics we were able to cobble together of this grand event. %Gallery-7207% Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Alltel antes up BlackBerry 8830 World Edition

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Alltel , 1xRTT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , EV-DO , CDMA They're a little late to the party , but it looks like Alltel has started slipping its own variant of RIM's BlackBerry 8830 World Edition into retail channels in the past few days. Thanks to a 900 / 1800MHz GSM radio packed in there beside the standard CDMA / EV-DO fare, the 8830 gives subscribers to CDMA carriers like Alltel a somewhat painless route to international roaming without juggling multiple handsets. The cameraless posterior means that the 8830's pretty much all business -- but with GPS in the mix, it's a darned good business to be in, we reckon. Check it for $250 on contract after rebates. • Sprint scores silly marketing points, pairs BlackBerry 8830 with private island

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Sprint , 1xRTT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , EV-DO , CDMA Sprint must figure that if you need a phone whose name includes the phrase "World Edition," you're probably the jet-setting type. Like, the type that needs a private island, apparently. A tipster pointed us out to a pretty clever new ad campaign involving Sprint's BlackBerry 8830 World Edition that offers an enticing combo package: an 8830 for $200 (after contract and rebates, of course) and an "Exotic Island plus amenities" for a shade over ten mil. Total cost: $10.5 million. Of course, if you actually go through the process of trying to place an order, the site calls you out on it -- but here's where it gets interesting, they actually offer to take your information through an email and get you in touch with the appropriate brokers if you are, in fact, serious. Talk about customer service! [Thanks, Jake] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • BlackBerry Pearl 2 in the wild

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , GSM , GPRS , EDGE If you're trying to figure out what's different here from the original... well, first of all, you're probably not a Pearl owner, and second, most of the fun stuff is under the hood. Pinstack has scored a plethora of high quality shots detailing the GSM / WiFi variant of the Pearl 2 , OS 4.3 and all. As we'd heard before, the presence of WiFi excludes the presence of GPS here and it'll be up to carriers to decide which model to carry -- an especially tough decision considering that there's no 3G radio. Most of the Pearl 2's rumored improvements are in full display in this gallery, too: the 3.5mm headphone jack, external microSD slot, moderately improved keypad , and a fresh coat of paint. Hit the Pinstack link for the remainder of the visual stimulation. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • AT&T crippling BlackBerry 8820's GPS, too?

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE If the rumor mill pans out, the upcoming BlackBerry 8820 stands to be a bottomless piggy bank for AT&T. Why? First we heard that the device's WiFi capability would be unusable without an EDGE data plan -- despite the fact that there's absolutely no reasonable correlation between the two -- and now we're hearing that its GPS service may suffer a similar fate. Boy Genius Report is saying that the 8820's navigation capabilities will be usable only with TeleNav at a cost of $9.99 per month. Don't get us wrong, TeleNav gets the job done, but why can't any app we choose tap into the GPS signal? The phone isn't out yet (the latest intel suggests September) so we'll withhold judgment until then, but please, AT&T, we beg of you: let us use our hardware however we choose. • BlackBerry 8820 on AT&T next month?

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE Sources are telling us that RIM's upgraded 8800 , the 8820 , will finally be ready for AT&T come the 15th of September. As a refresher, the 8820 adds WiFi to the 8800's buttoned down, all-business spec sheet, but it turns out there's a very sneaky catch: WiFi won't be usable unless the subscriber hooks up a data plan. We're guessing this'll be hacked in all of about 15 minutes, but yeah, buyer beware. AT&T will be touting the 8820 as rocking twice the battery life of Verizon's 8830 , so at least you'll be able to curse the data lockdown for twice as long before you run out of juice. • September's bumper crop for T-Mobile to include first 3G handset?

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , RIM , Samsung , T-Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS Though we still don't have a great sense of exactly when or where T-Mobile plans to kick off its long-overdue 3G launch , the hardware is thankfully starting to materialize -- so they'll at least be ready when the time comes to flip the switch. Boy Genius Report has apparently scored some additional intel detailing the Samsung SGH-T639, a phone we saw grace the FCC not long ago (which is how we happen to know it rocks T-Mobile's particular flavor of WCDMA, 1700MHz). If this slide pans out, it looks like the T639 is a pretty unremarkable offering considering its rather remarkable place in T-Mobile history, sporting a meager one megapixel camera in an ultra-conservative flip package. It looks like it'll hit on the 10th of September, though there's no indication whether any 3G markets will light up on the same day. In other T-Mobile news, it looks like the carrier will be rereleasing the first-gen BlackBerry Pearl in three new colors on September 4 while the more interesting 8320 variant of the Curve -- WiFi and all -- hits on September 24. Finally, Motorola pulls two out of its sleeve for the month: the low end W490 clamshell and the "RAZR V3 06," which as far as we can tell, is yet another rehash of the tired RAZR V3. At any rate, kudos, T-Mobile! Read - Samsung SGH-T639 Read - RIM BlackBerry Curve 8320 Read - RIM BlackBerry Pearl Read - Motorola RAZR V3 06, W490 Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • RIM's new Pearls and Curves: WiFi or GPS, not both

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , 1xRTT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , EV-DO , CDMA It seems RIM's going full force with the "you can't have your cake and eat it too" rule with its new batch of devices, even though we're pretty sure we could have our cake and eat it too -- if only RIM would let us. If a slide deck over on Pinstack turns out to be legit, the next-gen Pearl and the 8300 Curve's slightly newer cousins will be available in carriers' choices of WiFi or GPS variants, but for whatever reason, never both. We're guessing RIM has some fancy explanation about battery drain or engineering issues, but whatever -- we can think of plenty of devices that do both with aplomb, so we're not too happy about the whole mess. As the Curves go, the 8310 will do GPS while the 8320 will pack the 802.11b/g action, but the devices' internals are otherwise unchanged from the original. The Pearl 2 meanwhile has a more expansive list of updates from its predecessor, stepping up to a 2 megapixel camera, an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headphone jack, and "new firm keypad technology" ( yay !) among other things. In the Pearl's case, network determines the add-on feature: GSM gets WiFI (probably to make up for the agony of EDGE) while CDMA gets GPS. Look for all of these to hit well before the year's out. • Vodafone picks up GPS-equipped BlackBerry Curve 8310

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Vodafone , GSM , GPRS , EDGE Just days after we Americans got a taste of BlackBerry with a hint GPS , now those in Germany can look forward to the same delicacy. The BlackBerry Curve 8310 will be picked up by Vodafone and sport built-in "GPS navigation and advanced multimedia functionality." Furthermore, the smartphone will include Vodafone Navigator software, a two-megapixel camera, microSD expansion slot, 320 x 240 resolution display, quad-band GSM support, Bluetooth 2.0, USB connectivity, and a media player to boot. Notably, the first 5,000 individuals to mosey on in and pick one up will reportedly be blessed with a 1GB microSD card gratis, and better yet, it will include the current 100 top chart songs pre-installed as MP3s (hooray!). So head on down to your local Vodafone outlet with €99.90 ($136), and be sure to navigate your return trip through all sorts of back roads. • BlackBerry 8820 to hit AT&T for $299, 8800 to see quick exit?

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE We can't be sure until folks are actually leaving AT&T retail locations with 8820s firmly in-hand, but Boy Genius Report's latest intel allegedly has the WiFi-equipped BlackBerry on shelves as soon as next week. Of course, another tipster has it pegged for August -- we suspect no one really knows for sure -- but either way, it looks like it'll retail for a believable $299 on contract and the 8800 will be phased out very quickly to make room for the new unit. Not surprisingly, sales folk are apparently being asked to downplay the 8820's WiFi capabilities unless specifically asked -- it's a feature AT&T generally despises, after all. • FCC approves WiFi-equipped BlackBerry

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , GSM , GPRS , EDGE We're not sure whether this is the 8820 we played with a while back, but the ID label documentation for this newcomer to the FCC's ranks shows a crappy rendering of a quadband GSM device that certainly looks in line with the 8800 series. For end users, that means we can expect a WiFi-equipped 'Berry that lacks the Curve's sex appeal, but may very well be the average business user's dream come true -- especially considering the inclusion of 802.11a alongside b and g (or so the SAR report alleges, anyway) and the probable lack of an integrated cam. No word on a release, but business focus aside, this would look pretty nice in T-Mobile's Hotspot @Home lineup, would it not? [Via TG Daily ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sprint launches BlackBerry 8830 World Edition

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Sprint-Nextel , 1xRTT , GSM , GPRS , EV-DO , CDMA While Sprint's launch of the dual-mode BlackBerry 8830 doesn't come as a surprise -- we knew it was only a matter of time before it hopped into Sprint's portfolio -- subscibers may raise a cheer if looking for some worldwide phone action. For only $199 (with a new two year agreement and data plan, of course) Sprint subscribers will be talking in 170+ countries and surfing in more than 70 -- which makes RIM's 8830 device just a wee bit handier than a GSM set. As an added bonus, Sprint has served this thing up SIM unlocked, which, for the GSM uninitiated, means you can buy a local SIM card when abroad, pop it in, and take advantage of local calling tariffs. This thing has launched on carriers everywhere and seems a no-brainer if you travel in areas only serviced by GSM and can't survive without RIM's finest at your side.
