  • Where the hell is the 3G iPhone for Europe? We might know.

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , GPRS , HSDPA , UMTS , Apple The only thing more slippery than an iPhoneSIMFree release date has to be the magically, mystical 3G iPhone rumored for Europe . At least with the latter, Apple has been kind enough to drop a few dreggy hints. Add 'em all up and Apple Expo -- kicking off September 25th -- seems to be the prime time for Apple to announce a new flagship 16GB, 3G iPhone. Don't believe it? Check this: Berlin's IFA show is over with nay a peep from Apple or from the major European carriers about a European iPhone, even though the deals seem pretty well sewn-up . Apple's current top-o-the-line 8GB iPhone just received a remarkable $200 drop in price. That opens the door for another iPhone priced at what's been proven to be a consumer-acceptable, $599 price point. That $200 easily buys Apple a total of 16GB of NAND flash (about $70 for the extra 8GB) like that found in their new iPod touch as well as a tri-band HSDPA radio with plenty of profit left over. Apple told us during the Q3 fiscal call that more information about the European iPhone would be made available at the end of their current -- big product transition -- fiscal quarter which ends September 30th. Apple Expo has seen the launch of the redesigned iMac G5 and other Apple products in the past. Pretty strong case eh? Of course, we're only speculating, but we're not alone. In fact, 9to5Mac who burst onto the rumor scene recently with their nano "fatty" and iPod touch details was humming a similar tune just a few weeks ago. • iPhone's latest update improving WiFi and camera?

Filed under: Handsets , Software , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Despite the fact that we had a bit of trouble with the latest iPhone update , some users are reporting drastically improved WiFi reception and camera performance since installing v1.0.2. Although Apple didn't exactly go into detail about what "bug fixes" were being addressed, a number of posters on various forums are apparently thrilled with the boost in WiFi reception and the "vast improvement in the camera's live video update." Of course, it's very possible that these betterments are simply due to differing circumstances in use before and after the update, so we'll leave it up you: have you noticed any drastic meliorations since the update, or is this stuff just all in our head? • Mess of circuitry unlocks iPhone, software solution next?

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Welp, 'tis done friends, but we're going to have to wait a week for all the gory details to be released. Geohot and his crew of trusty fiddlers have apparently found a solution for sorting the iPhone for worldwide consumption by hardware unlocking the beast. We've seen a video, and know he's been well involved with iPhone shenanigans since day one , but until we see it in our hand color us excited but not sold -- though we're stoked that they report a software based version may be on the horizon. But in the unhappy event that it ends up being hardware unlock only, you can use this week to brush up on your soldering skills. We're gonna be all over this in the coming days so know that the minute we know more, you will too. Peep the vid after the break. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Unlocked iPhones now available in Hong Kong -- cost arm, leg

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple Just how bad do ya want an iPhone, punk? Yeah, we're talking to you, Mr. Hong Kong Resident, because they're now available in your neck of the woods -- if the price is right, anyway. Supposedly unlocked examples of Apple's mobile gem (which we're starting to believe is really possible , even if this picture doesn't definitively prove it) are floating around the territory for a stiff $2,000, though that number falls to $750 if you can supply the phone yourself and bring it in just for the unlocking service. Still, though, you'd better really want one. [Via Gearfuse ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Filed under: Handsets , Software , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X For those not courageous enough to give the SoonR Talk workaround a go, fret not, as Skype has finally arrived (for realz) on the iPhone . SHAPE Services has introduced IM+ for Skype for iPhone, which is simply a Safari web application that enables one to "access the Skype ecosystem from the mobile environment." Reportedly, the app was "designed especially for the iPhone's touchscreen," and best of all, it's being offered up gratis "for a limited time." So go on, point your iPhone to SkypeforiPhone.com and get to to yappin', ya heard? Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • New Parallels Desktop beta supports iPhone

Filed under: Handsets , Software , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Trust us, the irony of someone needing to sync an Apple device through Windows that's running on a Mac is glaringly obvious, but hey, some folks just can't escape Outlook no matter how hard they try. Nevertheless, the new Parallels Desktop beta (which is available now) does add iPhone support in Windows XP and Vista along with a newly fortified Image Tool / Explorer and coherence windows that now work with Expose. Of course, you should recognize that this stuff is indeed still in beta, but if you're the daring (or overly trusting) type, feel free to hit the read link and get your download on. • Apple employees' free iPhones arriving?

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X The free iPhones seem to be flowing for the Apple employees promised them at the Apple town hall meeting last month. Thinksecret is reporting that the first bunch to get the lootbags are Apple retails folks. We have to admit, we're pretty envious of "Generous Jobs" move to hand these out to all the staffers at Apple. Of course, we're hoping that at least a few of em have some programming skills and are inspired enough to hop on over the iPhone Dev Wiki to aid in the effort to tame and unlock their shiny new gift. • AppleCare for iPhone now available

Filed under: Handsets , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X We're aware that not everybody feels the need to jump on the AppleCare bandwagon, but if you worry that the one year warranty isn't going to cut it for you, for $69 bucks, you can have two -- unless you live in Alabama, Connecticut, Nevada, and Wyoming, of course. We knew most of the details on this guy at launch time , but were pleasantly surprised to see that this'll cover your Apple Bluetooth headset as well as the handset. So if you've been itching to get at this added bit of security, take a deep breath, then hit the read link to wander over to the Apple Store. • Stephen Colbert gets an iPhone, warns of impending iEye release

Filed under: Culture , Handsets , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Although it's still not clear if Stephen Colbert was forced to actually shell out some hard-earned cash in order to procure his very own iPhone , one thing is certain: he finally owns one. The comedic talking head announced (and shamelessly boasted about) his new toy in a clip dubbed "March to Enslavement," where he made the not-so-wild prediction that one day we'd all bow to the robots we eagerly create. 'Course, that may be somewhat of a stretch, but the potentially forthcoming Apple iEye contraption may be closer to reality than we humans would like to believe. Frightened? Wait 'til you take a peek of it after the break... [Thanks, Dylan] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Apple's iPhone functioning with Vodafone?

Filed under: Handsets , Vodafone , GSM , GPRS , HSDPA , Apple , OS X Here's an interesting one. While just about every citizen in Europe twiddles their thumbs and awaits an iPhone announcement for their side of the pond, more than a few impatient souls have been looking for ways to utilize the device in their homeland right away. Most recently, however, is an intriguing report that a US-sourced iPhone is functioning fine (save for the lack of visual voicemail) on Vodafone after a user swapped an AT&T SIM card into an O2 XDA, had the carrier add it to his current contract, and then stuffed the now-Vodafone-compliant AT&T SIM back into the iPhone. Interestingly, hordes of IRC participants are balking at the story, suggesting that SIM numbers are network specific and that Vodafone should not have been able to pull off the aforementioned feat of magic. Hmm, we wonder if Vodafone's bubbling excitement to get ahold of Apple's handset could have anything to do with it? • iPhone set to launch on O2 UK in September? Round X

Filed under: Handsets , O2 , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X As previously mentioned here , here and here , we know iPhone is coming to the UK and if the rumor mill is on target -- and it seldom is with this device -- the newest frontrunner is (and likely was) O2 UK. A source close to Apple revealed to PC Advisor in the UK that iPhone paraphernalia's ready to go and that he "would bet" it will finally land in September. Of course , Would bet is pretty weak business, but after seeing this handset bounce from Vodafone to T-Mobile and then O2, we have now covered the gamut and one of them should just out the thing. Either way, September isn't far off, so lets hope we hear more then. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • iPhone Dev Wiki team gets closer to unlocking

Filed under: Handsets , Software , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Well, the team over at the iPhone Dev Wiki is claiming to have made some inroads into unlocking the mysteries of the iPhone. While a complete unlocking solution isn't yet available, they updated the Wiki this morning to let us all know that by using iASign -- a bit of software they have created -- the phone can purportedly be made to work with prepaid Cingular, AT&T, and AT&T's MVNO's SIM cards. Where's the beauty you ask? Well, this lets you pick up an iPhone sans contract, slap in your current SIM, and enjoy. We're really feelin the love they are tossing about freely, and are looking forward to the full unlocking solution that they reportedly will not be giving up on any time soon. At the request of the iPhone Dev Wiki team, we aren't including the link. Google is your friend. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
