  • THOUGHT: T-Mobile U.S. - not a bad option at all for Inbound Roamers

Sure, for more advanced smartphone users in the U.S., T-Mobile might be the worst option to chose since the Seattle-based carrier still lacks support of UMTS, not to talk about HSDPA but for inbound roamers like me, T-Mobile isn't that bad. Especially if you use a smartphone like the Samsung SGH-i600 which supports triband GSM at 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz and singleband UMTS/HSDPA at 2100 MHz only. Not sure what's wrong with AT&T's EDGE network here in Seattle but I don't get EDGE here (maybe it's available on 850 MHz only?) while T-Mobile's EDGE shows up everywhere: [ Permalink ] (c) 2008 by the::unwired - All Rights Reserved
  • Nokia and AT&T announce 6555 3G flip

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS Hey, we'd been told we'd see this next month -- but who are we to complain when the phone fairy drops in a couple weeks early? Nokia and AT&T today have announced the immediate availability of the 6555 , a rather attractive flip -- "smoothback design," as they call it -- sporting UMTS, a QVGA primary display, microSD expansion in case the 30MB onboard ain't enough, and the full spread of GSM / EDGE bands for global dominance. It hasn't shown up on AT&T's site just yet, but we're told we can get it today for $49.99 on a two-year agreement. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Tilt, Duo, Inferno, and Q9h to blow out AT&T's October?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Motorola , Nokia , Pantech , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , HSDPA , UMTS These are all devices we know folks have been waiting for, so we're delighted to finally hear some whipsers that launch windows are being put in place. First up, the AT&T Tilt -- alias 8925, alias Kaiser -- is rumored to be priced at $299 on a two-year or $374 on a one-year agreement. The Pantech Duo, which Amazon jumped the gun on over the weekend, will be launching for $199 on a two-year, which makes the Amazon pricing a bargain already. The Nokia 6555 "Inferno" gets priced at $49.99 on contract -- a steal for a sharp lookin' 3G flip, we figure. Last but not least, the Motorola Q9 global finally materializes for a cool $299, putting it head to head with the Tilt. All four of these are supposedly scheduled for shipment to stores on October 1, making for a very interesting month. Everyone know which of the four they're choosing yet? • Samsung's A737 slider for AT&T gets peeped

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS If there's one manufacturer you can't fault for failing to bring 3G devices to AT&T in full force, it's gotta be Samsung. These guys go all the way back to the very beginning (remember the ZX10 ?) and have managed to keep a pretty steady stream of handsets in the pipe through to the present day, most recently offering up the attractive (and mighty slim, may we add) A717 and A727 . That ain't all for the A7x7 series, though: as we'd mentioned before, there's an A737 in the pipe; since the series already has a flip and a candybar, this one's unsurprisingly a slider. phoneArena's scored an alleged shot of the phone, and although it appears to be a touch thicker than its siblings, that little indiscretion is made good for with an unapologetic red / black color scheme, a QVGA display (so we're told), and very likely HSDPA. No word on an exact release date for this sucker just yet. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Amazon gets impatient, offers Pantech C810 for AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , Pantech , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS You know, if it weren't for retailers and the FCC, manufacturers' and carriers' employees would lead relatively stress- and hypertension-free lives -- but in this heavily embargoed, NDA'd, confidentiality agreemented world in which we live, bean spillage is an inevitable occurrence. We're not saying that's what's going on here, but we find it odd that Amazon would start offering Pantech's C810 dual slider Windows Mobile smartphone for AT&T with nary a peep from the carrier itself. We're not saying Amazon jumped the gun on purpose, but it's entirely possible that they're selling it before AT&T intended (not that we're complaining in the least). Even better, they're offering it for a cool $180 which seems really reasonable for a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device with UMTS in such a creative and useful form factor. Give us a holler in comments if anyone grabs it! [Via Smartphone Thoughts ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • HTC website leaks AT&T Tilt, BlackBerry Connect support

Filed under: Handsets , Software , HTC , RIM , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS In case there was any lingering doubt that AT&T would pick up the Kaiser as the successor to its 8525 , this should put all those nasty thoughts to rest. Paul from MoDaCo has noticed that HTC's US site now rocks a guide to setting up BlackBerry Connect on the AT&T 8925 "Tilt," confirming several notable things: one, that AT&T is getting the device, two, that it's called the Tilt and its model number is 8925, and three, that it'll support BlackBerry Connect. Sadly, HTC's apparent misstep (or clever leak designed to get us all foaming at the mouth, depending on how you look at it) reveals nothing about a Tilt release date, but we've gotta think it's coming before too long now. • AT&T now offering Motorola RAZR 2 V9

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS What a refreshing change of pace! AT&T actually beat its estimate of "early September" for its variant of the Motorola RAZR 2 , the V9 -- albeit in a rather bizarre shade, "mahogany" (where we come from, that's called purple, but whatevs). Though it's not showing up on AT&T's online store just yet, it's showing up for their business "premier" customers (note the screen shot above) and seems to be filtering into brick-and-mortar locations as we write this. The premier site shows a rather shocking off-contract price of $749.99, though with a combination of discounts, rebates, and contracts, it should fall into a far more reasonable price range for pretty much everyone involved. Seriously, $750? Sheesh. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sony Ericsson's W580i Walkman lands on AT&T

Filed under: Handsets , Sony Ericsson , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE Just weeks after Sony Ericsson's sexy W580i Walkman phone went live on Rogers , AT&T customers can now get their hands on the mobile, too. According to AT&T's own listing of the handset, this svelte slider will (obviously) tout a two-megapixel camera, video recording / playback, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, a built-in pedometer, Memory Stick Micro support, quad-band connectivity, and even PacMan / Ms. PacMan games (huzzah!). You can snap it up right now for $269.99 sans a contract, or $79.99 after inking your name to a two-year agreement and waiting for a pesky rebate to return. • Some upcoming AT&T launches?

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We've received some information detailing phones that AT&T apparently plans to launch in the not-too-distant future; we don't even have dates or prices just yet, but a few of these are juicy enough so that we thought we'd pass it along anyhow. Samsung looks to be launching the A117 "Jayhawk" and A127 "Mbenz" (both on prepaid), the A517 "Lion," and the A737 "Peridot" in metal, orange, and lime. Nokia contributes the attractive 6555 "Inferno" and a refreshed N75 with stereo Bluetooth and a new UI. From LG we get the CU515 "Chiwoo" and CU720 "Saturn," while Pantech brings us that crazy dual slide Windows Mobile 6 device as the C810b. Good times! • Pantech C180, AT&T's homage to the Helio Ocean

Filed under: Handsets , Pantech , ATT , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS What would you get if you crossed a Helio Ocean , Windows Mobile 6 Standard , and UMTS? This here Pantech C180, naturally. Boy Genius Report has pictures of the AT&T-branded device being called "Mustang" and "Duo" internally, though it's not known whether either of those names will make it to production; features are said to include a 3G radio of some sort (either UMTS or UMTS / HSDPA), microSD expansion, that wild dual-slide action with a numeric keypad in one direction and a full QWERTY deal in the other, and a 65,000-color display -- but other than that, we're in the dark. It's rumored to be hitting as soon as next month for $250 on contract, and if this all checks out, we suspect AT&T may have a difficult time keeping 'em stocked. • AT&T adding Motorola V3xx color, Nokia E62 still hanging around?

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Nokia , ATT , Symbian , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS AT&T may be about to add the RAZR 2 V9 to its stable, effectively halving any remaining desire we had for the original RAZR V3 line of devices -- but that's apparently not stopping the carrier from trying to milk a few final drops from the played out design. According to the most recent dealer price sheet floating around, the HSDPA-capable V3xx will be offered in another color, the ambiguously named "platinum red." We can't recall the last time we saw platinum take on a reddish hue, but whatevs. Also interesting to note here is that the Nokia E62 -- a phone we'd previously heard had been killed off -- is seemingly alive and well; not only is it mentioned in the sheet, it has no sign of an "EOL" tag on it. Long live Symbian, we guess! Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • iPhone's latest update improving WiFi and camera?

Filed under: Handsets , Software , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Despite the fact that we had a bit of trouble with the latest iPhone update , some users are reporting drastically improved WiFi reception and camera performance since installing v1.0.2. Although Apple didn't exactly go into detail about what "bug fixes" were being addressed, a number of posters on various forums are apparently thrilled with the boost in WiFi reception and the "vast improvement in the camera's live video update." Of course, it's very possible that these betterments are simply due to differing circumstances in use before and after the update, so we'll leave it up you: have you noticed any drastic meliorations since the update, or is this stuff just all in our head?
