  • HP's iPAQ 610 gets demonstrated on video

Filed under: Handsets , Windows Mobile , HP , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Those hoping to get to know HP's iPAQ 600 series a bit better can start celebrating, as the folks over at Notebooks were able to sit down with Raj Bhavani, an iPAQ product manager, and record a brief demonstration describing its features. Notably, the built-in WiFi, Bluetooth , HSDPA, click-wheel, three-megapixel camera, integrated GPS, and Windows Mobile 6 operating system were all highly praised, but the lackluster 320 x 240 resolution display looked to be a (critical) weak point. Nevertheless, the device does look pretty sharp (or maybe we're just suckers for all that connectivity), so be sure and click through for a look at the interview. • Australia gets HTC P3600i, complete with Windows Mobile 6

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Looks like those that call Down Under home have been blessed with yet another option in the smartphone department, as HTC has apparently launched the P3600i in your neck of the woods. Deemed an "HTC P3600 with a faster CPU and more ROM," this Windows Mobile 6 device looks to be an Asia-Pacific exclusive for now, and touts quad-band GSM, 802.11g, a two-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0, 160MB of internal memory, a miniSD expansion slot, and UMTS / HSDPA to boot. Best of all, it's available right now on 3. [Via UnwiredView ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Nokia N95 with American 3G gets FCC'd!

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , Symbian , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS We're speechless. In fact, we think we might cry -- but rest assured, they're tears of joy. Rumors of a Nokia N95 packing American HSDPA have been spreading like wildfire as of late, and we're ecstatic to see that they were totally true. Though this sucker gets down with the 850 and 1900MHz bands, it doesn't get in on the 1700MHz action, suggesting that if the T-Mobile rumor is still true, this ain't it. Though arguably not quite as attractive as the decidedly non-US 8GB N95 in black that we saw this morning, this phone's innards are pretty much the most beautiful thing we've seen all day. Nokia, we turn the floor over to you to answer questions about pricing and availability. [Via Wirelessinfo.com ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • HTC's P5500 'Nike' slated for September launch?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Windows Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA Although the most recent hunch about a handset release did indeed prove true , we're not so sure about these HTC claims. DigiTimes has it that High Tech Computer is "expected to launch its second touchscreen-controlled smartphone supporting a 3.5G standard perhaps as soon as September," and while it didn't confirm, the site did insinuate that the mobile in question is the P5500 "Nike." Additionally, the rumors suggested that the phone will be "built using a CPU from Samsung and chipsets from Qualcomm ," while also supporting W-CDMA. Of note, these same "sources" claimed that a device codenamed Vogue would be hitting North, Central, and South American shores, and we certainly can't find any room to argue with that. • Apple's iPhone functioning with Vodafone?

Filed under: Handsets , Vodafone , GSM , GPRS , HSDPA , Apple , OS X Here's an interesting one. While just about every citizen in Europe twiddles their thumbs and awaits an iPhone announcement for their side of the pond, more than a few impatient souls have been looking for ways to utilize the device in their homeland right away. Most recently, however, is an intriguing report that a US-sourced iPhone is functioning fine (save for the lack of visual voicemail) on Vodafone after a user swapped an AT&T SIM card into an O2 XDA, had the carrier add it to his current contract, and then stuffed the now-Vodafone-compliant AT&T SIM back into the iPhone. Interestingly, hordes of IRC participants are balking at the story, suggesting that SIM numbers are network specific and that Vodafone should not have been able to pull off the aforementioned feat of magic. Hmm, we wonder if Vodafone's bubbling excitement to get ahold of Apple's handset could have anything to do with it? • FCC approves Samsung SGH-T639, T-Mobile's first 3G phone?

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , T-Mobile , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS Well, what have we here? The oh-so-informative depths of the FCC have seemingly disclosed what appears to be the "first 3G handset approved for T-Mobile." Judging by the tested bands and the obvious model number, it looks like the SGH-T639 (Alltel flavor pictured) may be a sign of things to come (and hopefully soon) for T-Mobile. Of course, we did see a similar coincidence earlier this year when Nokia's N90 got its own shiny approval sticker, but there's no harm in hoping. The clamshell device supports quad-band connectivity and Bluetooth, but until T-Mobile or Samsung fess up to exactly what's going on here, speculation is still all we've got in regard to T-Mobile's forthcoming 3G rollout. • Jobs, Stephenson sound off in iPhone interview

Filed under: Handsets , Interviews , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Thankfully for us all, the iPhone launch is but hours away, and what better way to make those last second decisions on braving the crowds (or not ) than to read over what's likely to be the last pre-iPhone-launch interview with both Apple and AT&T's head honchos? Sitting down with USAToday , Steve Jobs and Randall Stephenson faced a number of dutiful questions, and a few of the answers were intriguing to say the least. Besides bragging about revolutionizing the mobile phone industry and finally producing "a phone people like," the duo noted that the 6:00PM launch time was chosen to give "everyone the same shot" at nabbing one, and they both made it seem like shortages wouldn't be too much of an issue . Most noticeable was the dodging of the inevitable EDGE inquiries, as both execs spent more time boasting of the iPhone's ability to "fluidly switch from EDGE to WiFi" than actually responding to the "sluggish" criticism received thus far. Furthermore, Jobs noted that Apple was already working with a number of companies in regard to corporate email, and while he wouldn't budge when questioned about an overseas release , he did state that "selling 10 million" during its first year was a "realistic goal." • European operators not keen on Apple's demands

Filed under: Handsets , ATT , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , Apple , OS X Ah, the plot thickens. Just days ago we got wind that Apple could be facing a few hurdles in the European market, and considering that operators are now referring to the company as "unbelievably arrogant," we'd say the two have some serious issues to work through. According to Avi Greengart, a principal analyst at Current Analysis, Apple is making demands that "simply cannot be justified no matter how hot the product is," but failed to note exactly what these were. Interestingly, it was even noted that several carriers felt adamant that "they would never offer the iPhone ." C'mon, who are these guys kidding -- somebody will end up bending to Apple's demands if it means offering up the oh-so-coveted handset. At least, we sure hope so for you folks across the pond. • LG's "3G for all" KU250 on sale this month

Filed under: Handsets , LG , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS What you're looking at here, LG's KU250 , might be the first 3G phone some folks in developing nations ever see. Chosen to lead off the GSM Association's "3G for all" campaign to bring high-speed data outside its typical industrialized comfort zone, the 15mm candybar goes on sale this month in parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East on a variety of carriers. Pricing will likely vary from market to market, but the goal is to keep it cheap -- pretty impressive considering the phone's video calling capability, media player with support for AAC+ and WMA, microSD expansion, and 1.3 megapixel cam. • T3G, NXP develop automatic handover between TD-SCDMA and GSM

Filed under: GSM , GPRS , EDGE , CDMA , Misc It sounds like the days of dropped calls and endless frustration when leaving TD-SCDMA coverage and entering a GSM realm are nearing an end, as Beijing's T3G Technology and NXP Semiconductors have introduced the "world's first voice automatic handover of multi-mode TD-SCDMA and GSM/GPRS/EDGE in a handset." Just as it sounds, the technology will provide bi-directional on-the-fly, automatic handovers between TD-SCDMA and GSM networks, and any equipped mobile can "automatically scan for available networks" and switch over when necessary "without any adverse effects." Apparently, the two firms have already validated the claims on a number of Chinese network environments, but we've no idea how soon this peace making creation will get rolled out to the masses. • Nokia 6267 hits FCC

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , UMTS We'd caught wind of rumors of a Nokia 6267 in the past; normally, a four-digit Nokia doesn't really catch our attention -- at least in unsubstantiated rumor form -- but it turns out that this one'll feature some North America-friendly 3G. FCC documents released today indicate that the phone, said to feature a QVGA screen and comprehensive media support, will sport WCDMA 850 in addition to GSM 850 and 1900 (though strangely, we weren't able to track down any mention of WCDMA 1900). We also know from the filing that Bluetooth is in the cards, and in all likelihood, it'll rock Series 40. Could this be AT&T's successor to the never-released 6282 ? • Teltonika's HSDPA USB modem accepts SIM cards and OS X

Filed under: Peripherals , Others , GSM , GPRS , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS While PCMCIA and ExpressCards certainly fit the bill at times, the convenience of popping any ole SIM card into a USB adapter and hopping on a 3G network can't be denied. Teltonika's HSDPA USB modem just so happens to provide such a luxury, as the versatile device supports speeds up to 1.8Mbps via GPRS / EDGE / HSDPA, is entirely USB powered, and provides the ability to "text from your PC" and use VoIP. Furthermore, the TELTUSB3G manages to support both Windows and OS X right out of the box, and the company even allows you to customize the enclosure with colors and logos of your choice if you cough up the required surcharge. Unsurprisingly, you won't be snagging this one in the US without some importing help from the other side of the pond, but Europeans can grab one right now for around £165.00 ($329).
