  • Get a Storm for a C-note less than usual

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA If the BlackBerry Storm's $199.99 retail price on contract after rebate isn't sitting particularly well with you, there's an alternative you may want to investigate. LetsTalk, purveyors of the free Bold , have outdone themselves with a rebate-laden $99 Storm; granted, the catch is that you've got to sign up for a plan package of $69.99 or higher, but let's be honest -- plenty of Storm buyers are going to be doing just that anyway. • Verizon schedules Storm for November 21 release, $199.99 on contract

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA It may not be the iPhone-beating pricing we'd been hoping for, but $199.99 on a new two-year contract after $50 mail-in rebate will probably still be enough to sell a Storm or two (or billion), especially considering that it becomes both RIM's first touchscreen set and Verizon's first phone with global 3G when it finally floods the market (a bundled 8GB microSD card doesn't hurt, either). Speaking of flooding the market, it'll be available both online and in-store starting November 21 -- just a week from this Friday -- so get ready to finally say goodnight to that grungy BlackBerry 950 you've been using since 1978. • Verizon locks in BlackBerry Storm launch for November 24 at $199.99?

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA Murphy's Law dictated from the very beginning that Verizon's claim of a November launch for the Storm meant late November (at best), and indeed, it now looks like that's where we're headed. Boy Genius Report has picked up some juicy documentation that seems to suggest that November 24 is the zero day with a $199.99 retail price after rebate; what's more, stores will be opening an hour early to accomadate the throngs of rabid, frothing-at-the-mouth businessmen and businesswomen in Zegna suits looking for their latest BlackBerry fix. It looks like there'll also be a "pre-launch" on the 20th, meaning customers Verizon reall cares about -- not us, by any stretch of the imagination -- will have a chance stroll into one of 123 extra-special corporate stores to tool around with a demo unit and place their order in person. Either way, stores are expected to have tons of units available for sale on the 24th, so don't show up at 8pm the night before. Unless you're into that sort of thing. • BlackBerry 9530 Storm pricing revealed on VZW staging server

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Ah, now this is a bit more solid pricing information. Verizon's testman pre-launch site now lists the BlackBerry 9530 Storm for $219.99 under a 2 year contract. Not quite below the $199 threshold set by the iPhone 3G as predicted by some analysts . Then again, the fat lady isn't singing yet so maybe we'll see some kind of mail-in rebate before this gets officially official. Without contract, we're looking at $520 according to the staging server. Pretty close the prices we saw hinted at early last week. See that screen grab and another for the $290 one-year contract after the break. • Verizon promo hints at possible BlackBerry Storm pricing

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA It's a little absurd that Verizon Wireless still hasn't come out of the woodwork to announce an official price on its BlackBerry Storm , but it seems an approximate sticker has been found in a most unusual place. If you peruse the absolutely enthralling fine print in the carrier's NYC Storm Hunt contest, you'll notice a disclosing line that details the grand prize. 50 individuals will win a BlackBerry Storm 9500 handset and a $50 Verizon Wireless gift card with an approximate retail value of $549. After consulting with our trusty abacus, we're left with a retail Storm price of $499. In other words, the 2-year contract price on this could theoretically be mighty delicious . • iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Storm and Bold compared on video: awkward...

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , CDMA , Apple , OS X One might think that the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Storm could get along together, but similar to twin brothers who both aspire to graduate Magna Laude from an Ivy league school, these two aren't exactly the most loving of siblings. Oh, and toss in that iPhone 3G -- which played a huge role in helping Apple sell more phones than RIM last quarter -- and you've got yourself a bona fide mess. Check out all three getting shoved up on one another in the name of comparison just after the break. It's a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll get used to it. • BlackBerry Storm rumbles through the FCC

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA We're still sitting around waiting for an official release date from RIM, but perhaps this will help things along: the BlackBerry Storm has been OK'd by the FCC and is ready to send harmful radiation straight into your head. That's about all the info we've got from this fairy secretive approval report -- which doesn't even specify the name of the device -- but the label placement diagram shows off the back of the phone, with appropriate lines, button placement and world-roaming SIM slot that all point to Storm. "November-ish" can't come soon enough! Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Verizon tours America with hands-on BlackBerry Storm events

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , EV-DO , CDMA Are you eager to get your paws around one of Verizon's much ballyhooed BlackBerry Storms ? No, we mean are you really eager? If so, you can hit the read link (or just look at the image above, on second thought) and find the locale nearest you, pencil in a vacation day and get ready for the best few hours of your entire life. VZW will apparently be hitting the road in late October and into November in order to showcase its soon-to-be-flagship touchscreen phone, and it's even luring you harder with food and drinks on the house. Mmm, cookies and push e-mail. [Via BlackBerry Sync ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Formula 1 superstar finishes first in race to nab BlackBerry Storm

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA There are, shall we say, certain "advantages" to driving a race car sponsored by global wireless behemoth Vodafone . Fame, fortune, and a free account (seriously, all the minutes and kilobytes you can eat!) definitely rank high on that list, but it all pales in comparison to this. It seems that Formula 1 wizard Lewis Hamilton has been gifted with a Voda-branded Storm , a great publicity play for the carrier -- particularly as he's sitting in front of a camera describing how "wicked" it is. Clearly, the video is little more than a PR stunt, but the phone genuinely seems to be his, and at least we can get a clear look at how fast, fluid, and pretty the interface appears to be. So, anyone know where he leaves that thing when he's out racing? Check the full action after the break. • Telus claims BlackBerry Storm on behalf of Her Majesty's Canadian Dominion

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Telus Mobility , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA Seems that the bickering over which Canadian carrier would land the Storm has drawn to an end -- either that, or Telus is gearing up to jump the gun and just declare itself the preemptive winner in the hopes of elbowing Bell right out of the picture. Whatever the case, the CDMA giant now has a page up on its site encouraging folks to sign up to find out when the 9530 is available -- which according to Boy Genius Report's leaked press release, should be "just in time for the holiday shopping season." If that unnecessarily nebulous statement means November, that puts 'em right in line with Verizon to the south and Vodafone to the east; so much for preferential treatment on the home turf, eh? [Via Boy Genius Report ] Update: What's this -- a truce? Could it be? Bell has now also announced that it's getting the Storm, so if there's any sort of exclusivity going on here, it's for an awfully short period of time. Thanks, everyone! • BlackBerry Storm bows, comes next month to Verizon and Vodafone

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA A storm's arrival typically isn't something to celebrate, but we're going to make a notable exception here seeing how the BlackBerry Storm is less of a destructive weather pattern and more of an incredibly hot smartphone -- arguably RIM's hottest to date. Fit to its business-savvy roots, the long-rumored handset comes equipped with the most comprehensive global roaming capabilities of virtually any wireless device you'll find anywhere, featuring EV-DO Rev. A, quadband EDGE, and 2100MHz HSPA for Europe. Beyond that, the Storm becomes RIM's very first touchscreen phone, mounting a 3.26-inch 480 x 360 glass display on a unique clickable surface so that the entire thing can be pressed downwards -- just like a real button -- for tactile feedback when making selections. It includes a full HTML finger-navigable browser, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing capabilities, Bluetooth 2.0, 1GB of on-board storage with an 8GB microSD card bundled in the box, 3.5mm headphone jack, automatic orientation and ambient lighting sensors, and a 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam with dedicated flash, making it a legitimate jack-of-all-trades that seems likely to be able to handle even the most chaotic personal and professional lives users can throw its way. It'll allegedly do 15 days of standby or 5.5 hours of talk time on either GSM or CDMA networks. No word on pricing yet -- we're told all will be revealed "in the coming weeks" -- but it'll launch on both Verizon and Vodafone in November.
