  • Formula 1 superstar finishes first in race to nab BlackBerry Storm

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA There are, shall we say, certain "advantages" to driving a race car sponsored by global wireless behemoth Vodafone . Fame, fortune, and a free account (seriously, all the minutes and kilobytes you can eat!) definitely rank high on that list, but it all pales in comparison to this. It seems that Formula 1 wizard Lewis Hamilton has been gifted with a Voda-branded Storm , a great publicity play for the carrier -- particularly as he's sitting in front of a camera describing how "wicked" it is. Clearly, the video is little more than a PR stunt, but the phone genuinely seems to be his, and at least we can get a clear look at how fast, fluid, and pretty the interface appears to be. So, anyone know where he leaves that thing when he's out racing? Check the full action after the break. • Telus claims BlackBerry Storm on behalf of Her Majesty's Canadian Dominion

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Telus Mobility , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA Seems that the bickering over which Canadian carrier would land the Storm has drawn to an end -- either that, or Telus is gearing up to jump the gun and just declare itself the preemptive winner in the hopes of elbowing Bell right out of the picture. Whatever the case, the CDMA giant now has a page up on its site encouraging folks to sign up to find out when the 9530 is available -- which according to Boy Genius Report's leaked press release, should be "just in time for the holiday shopping season." If that unnecessarily nebulous statement means November, that puts 'em right in line with Verizon to the south and Vodafone to the east; so much for preferential treatment on the home turf, eh? [Via Boy Genius Report ] Update: What's this -- a truce? Could it be? Bell has now also announced that it's getting the Storm, so if there's any sort of exclusivity going on here, it's for an awfully short period of time. Thanks, everyone! • BlackBerry Storm bows, comes next month to Verizon and Vodafone

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA A storm's arrival typically isn't something to celebrate, but we're going to make a notable exception here seeing how the BlackBerry Storm is less of a destructive weather pattern and more of an incredibly hot smartphone -- arguably RIM's hottest to date. Fit to its business-savvy roots, the long-rumored handset comes equipped with the most comprehensive global roaming capabilities of virtually any wireless device you'll find anywhere, featuring EV-DO Rev. A, quadband EDGE, and 2100MHz HSPA for Europe. Beyond that, the Storm becomes RIM's very first touchscreen phone, mounting a 3.26-inch 480 x 360 glass display on a unique clickable surface so that the entire thing can be pressed downwards -- just like a real button -- for tactile feedback when making selections. It includes a full HTML finger-navigable browser, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing capabilities, Bluetooth 2.0, 1GB of on-board storage with an 8GB microSD card bundled in the box, 3.5mm headphone jack, automatic orientation and ambient lighting sensors, and a 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam with dedicated flash, making it a legitimate jack-of-all-trades that seems likely to be able to handle even the most chaotic personal and professional lives users can throw its way. It'll allegedly do 15 days of standby or 5.5 hours of talk time on either GSM or CDMA networks. No word on pricing yet -- we're told all will be revealed "in the coming weeks" -- but it'll launch on both Verizon and Vodafone in November. • Telus and Bell in bidding war over BlackBerry Storm?

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Bell Mobility , Telus Mobility , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA The Storm's a lock for Verizon stateside, but we're hearing the battle for the jewel in RIM's crown is far from over north of the border -- which would actually make a whole lot of sense, considering that we haven't yet heard anything definitive from any of the carriers up there. Telus is said to have tried to lock up the deal out of the gate, but Bell jumped in, upped the ante, and currently has the high bid for an exclusive Storm launch. Our tipster says "this won't be over any time soon," so we've got to ask: any Bell or Telus subscribers out there want to kick in some cash to get it on your network? • Verizon tells us all about the BlackBerry Storm's "WOW factors"

Filed under: Handsets , Features , RIM , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA Flashy new slides circulating among Verizon staffers are calling out the Storm for everything that makes it just so darned Stormy, and the list is pretty impressive -- particularly the bit about the radios. As we've heard before, the Storm will pack CDMA / EV-DO Rev. A, quadband EDGE, and 2100MHz HSPA, making it one of the most global phones ever to hit the market. The list of "WOW factors" (Verizon's verbiage, not ours) doesn't stop there, though: we've also got a 3.25-inch 480 x 360 display dubbed "1/2 VGA+," which puts it just a notch above the Bold's 480 x 320 setup. The screen offers tactile feedback and auto-rotation to boot, plus you've got that 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with flash, 1GB of onboard memory with microSD expansion -- an 8GB card is included in the box -- and "enhanced background noise cancellation." Turning our attention to software, RIM calls the Storm's web browsing experience "best in class," which is a good sign if those guys really know their competition, and we've got AGPS and visual voicemail (post-launch, sadly) in the pipe. Still no solid date on a launch for this blasted thing, but we'll be listening for... ahem , thunder. • BlackBerry Storm 9530 for Verizon gets boxed

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , Vodafone , Rogers Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA So we might not have a physical device here, but these packaging renderings are pretty solid evidence of exactly what BlackBerry fans on Verizon -- particularly those jealous of the Bold -- can expect in a few weeks' time. It looks like RIM's first foray into the scary world of touchscreens will be officially branded the 9530 Storm , will be global (it includes a SIM card, after all), and will feature an 8GB SanDisk microSD card preinstalled. Wondering what happened to the Thunder name? Turns out that'll apparently be reserved for the version of the phone launching on Rogers up in Canada and on Vodafone across the pond. Those Storm users on the screen there sure look happy, don't they? Gallery: BlackBerry Storm 9350 for Verizon gets boxed Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola's worldly Q9: "Napoleon" breaks cover for Verizon

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Verizon Wireless , Windows Mobile , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , CDMA It looks like Motorola and Verizon are getting ready to take a third crack at the Q9 form factor, following up the Q9m and Q9c -- and this time around, there's a little something extra in store. On top of the EV-DO Rev. A radio, the so-called "Napoleon" (codename, of course) features GSM, because -- surprise, surprise -- businesspeople who use Windows Mobile devices tend to do just a bit of traveling. It looks like Moto has taken this opportunity to give the Q9 meme a little nip-tuck job, too, with a rounded body and a tastefully-applied ring of chrome around the top edge. They've even tossed in a fingerprint scanner for good measure, a tip o' the hat to the suits who'll undoubtedly populate the upper 90 percent of this sucker's client base. No word on a release date or price, but can we cautiously submit a thumbs-up for the design direction here? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Alltel tried to buy Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T as a public company

Filed under: Alltel , ATT , Sprint , T-Mobile , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , CDMA , Misc Unless you've been camped out under a Rhode Island-sized boulder for the past few weeks, chances are you know that Verizon has announced its intentions to acquire Alltel . During a recent interview with CEO Scott Ford, Talk Business host Roby Brock was able to get quite a few talking points out of the exec that didn't involve the most recent transaction . More specifically, Mr. Ford noted that prior to Alltel becoming a private company , it had "tried to buy Sprint three times, tried to buy AT&T Wireless [and] tried to buy T-Mobile." He continued by saying that "some of those times it went with partners, [while] some of those times it didn't." Essentially, Alltel was "doing everything it could to get to a national platform." Believe it or not, those quotes really are just the tip of the iceberg, but the full spill is entirely too detailed for this space. • Coolpad showcases dual-band, dual-SIM handset at CommunicAsia

Filed under: Handsets , Others , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , CDMA Dual-band? Check. Dual-SIM? Check. One phone? Triple check. Believe it or not, Coolpad has reportedly crafted a phone that's multifaceted like no other -- one that not only includes room for a pair of SIM cards, but includes GSM and CDMA radios. Furthermore, the unit can purportedly switch between GSM and CDMA accounts on a whim, making you wonder why on Earth this didn't arrive before you plunked down for a second handset. The mobile is supposedly going for anywhere between $100 to $1,000 (depending on model and "who you know on the inside"), but you'll have to trek to Indonesia, China or Africa in order to acquire one. • Tranzda shows four Linux smartphones -- GSM or CDMA, your choice

Filed under: Handsets , Others , Linux , GSM , EDGE , CDMA Tranzda is starting to step up its game and really push its Newplus Linux stack in earnest, debuting four new models on its site -- plus a fifth, the T818, that it's being a little more secretive about. The TGP-369, TFX-326, TGP-802, and TFX-320 cover both the CDMA and GSM bases, and include some notable features like a fingerprint scanner on the 802, GPS, and RFID capability on certain models. In terms of appearance, all of the shown models seem to be modest upgrades from the Newplus-powered PM328 we've seen in the past, though the UI still looks like it could use a little more work. • Verizon to launch Samsung Glyde on May 9

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , Verizon Wireless , EDGE , CDMA We've learned from a trusted source that one of the jewels in Verizon's summer 2008 crown, the Samsung Glyde, will finally freaking launch on May 9. Despite a wealth of both in-the-wild and press quality photography of the phone over the past few weeks, it's been less and less clear when exactly Verizon was planning on actually offering it, so we're glad to finally have a date -- particularly considering that it's less than two weeks away. That'll give the Glyde a few comfortable weeks atop the heap ahead of the Dare's arrival , so enjoy it while you can, Samsung. Permalink | Email this | Comments
