  • BlackBerry Curve 8900 get early video praise, T-Mobile Germany says November

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , GSM , EDGE Just when we're all geared up to get crazy corporate with a bunch of Bold purchases, RIM has to go and make our lives difficult by reminding us that the Javelin / Curve 8900 is out there -- lurking -- just waiting to make a grand entrance sometime in the next few months. A new video posted to CrackBerry goes through the 8900's finer points, noting that the handset clocks in just a bit more compact than its big brother, features a slightly smaller, higher dot pitch display, and carries over an original Curve-style keyboard with spaced keys rather than the flowing design employed on the Bold (for what it's worth, the narrator seems to like both styles equally). Interestingly, it's noted that this prototype employs an older trackball design that'll allegedly be replaced with a more bulletproof design by the time it launches. The lack of 3G is going to be a dream killer for many, but we could see this one getting some retail legs underneath it if the price is right -- it's got WiFi, after all. In fact, T-Mobile Germany is saying that it'll have the 8900 next month -- a claim we actually believe, since Germany is from the future. The trackball shown on its version of the handset is distinctly different than CrackBerry's, so it's looking like the claim of a redesign might hold water. • Formula 1 superstar finishes first in race to nab BlackBerry Storm

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA There are, shall we say, certain "advantages" to driving a race car sponsored by global wireless behemoth Vodafone . Fame, fortune, and a free account (seriously, all the minutes and kilobytes you can eat!) definitely rank high on that list, but it all pales in comparison to this. It seems that Formula 1 wizard Lewis Hamilton has been gifted with a Voda-branded Storm , a great publicity play for the carrier -- particularly as he's sitting in front of a camera describing how "wicked" it is. Clearly, the video is little more than a PR stunt, but the phone genuinely seems to be his, and at least we can get a clear look at how fast, fluid, and pretty the interface appears to be. So, anyone know where he leaves that thing when he's out racing? Check the full action after the break. • Telus claims BlackBerry Storm on behalf of Her Majesty's Canadian Dominion

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Telus Mobility , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA Seems that the bickering over which Canadian carrier would land the Storm has drawn to an end -- either that, or Telus is gearing up to jump the gun and just declare itself the preemptive winner in the hopes of elbowing Bell right out of the picture. Whatever the case, the CDMA giant now has a page up on its site encouraging folks to sign up to find out when the 9530 is available -- which according to Boy Genius Report's leaked press release, should be "just in time for the holiday shopping season." If that unnecessarily nebulous statement means November, that puts 'em right in line with Verizon to the south and Vodafone to the east; so much for preferential treatment on the home turf, eh? [Via Boy Genius Report ] Update: What's this -- a truce? Could it be? Bell has now also announced that it's getting the Storm, so if there's any sort of exclusivity going on here, it's for an awfully short period of time. Thanks, everyone! • BlackBerry Storm bows, comes next month to Verizon and Vodafone

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Verizon Wireless , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA , HSUPA A storm's arrival typically isn't something to celebrate, but we're going to make a notable exception here seeing how the BlackBerry Storm is less of a destructive weather pattern and more of an incredibly hot smartphone -- arguably RIM's hottest to date. Fit to its business-savvy roots, the long-rumored handset comes equipped with the most comprehensive global roaming capabilities of virtually any wireless device you'll find anywhere, featuring EV-DO Rev. A, quadband EDGE, and 2100MHz HSPA for Europe. Beyond that, the Storm becomes RIM's very first touchscreen phone, mounting a 3.26-inch 480 x 360 glass display on a unique clickable surface so that the entire thing can be pressed downwards -- just like a real button -- for tactile feedback when making selections. It includes a full HTML finger-navigable browser, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing capabilities, Bluetooth 2.0, 1GB of on-board storage with an 8GB microSD card bundled in the box, 3.5mm headphone jack, automatic orientation and ambient lighting sensors, and a 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam with dedicated flash, making it a legitimate jack-of-all-trades that seems likely to be able to handle even the most chaotic personal and professional lives users can throw its way. It'll allegedly do 15 days of standby or 5.5 hours of talk time on either GSM or CDMA networks. No word on pricing yet -- we're told all will be revealed "in the coming weeks" -- but it'll launch on both Verizon and Vodafone in November. • AT&T's BlackBerry Pearl 8110 gets pretty in pink

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , GSM , EDGE Pink Pearls are nothing new -- but a pink Pearl with a fancy silkscreen? That's another matter altogether. These 8110s imbued with a newfound sense of fashion are starting to show up in AT&T stores now, so get 'em while they're hot. [Thanks, Kal] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Telus and Bell in bidding war over BlackBerry Storm?

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Bell Mobility , Telus Mobility , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA The Storm's a lock for Verizon stateside, but we're hearing the battle for the jewel in RIM's crown is far from over north of the border -- which would actually make a whole lot of sense, considering that we haven't yet heard anything definitive from any of the carriers up there. Telus is said to have tried to lock up the deal out of the gate, but Bell jumped in, upped the ante, and currently has the high bid for an exclusive Storm launch. Our tipster says "this won't be over any time soon," so we've got to ask: any Bell or Telus subscribers out there want to kick in some cash to get it on your network? • NTT DoCoMo to launch BlackBerry Bold next year

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , NTT DoCoMo , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS In a land of colorful, pivoting flips with TV tuners, VGA displays, and contactless payment systems, an uptight business beast like the Bold doesn't really seem like a natural fit -- but maybe that's exactly why it's needed. NTT DoCoMo and RIM have announced that the HSDPA-capable BlackBerry Bold will be heading to Japan in "early 2009," and from the spec sheet DoCoMo has provided, it looks like they're not planning on changing anything from the Bolds that have launched elsewhere around the world. Of course, this isn't the first time a BlackBerry has made an appearance in those parts , but still, doesn't it all feel just a little out of place? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Welcome to the DNC, featuring Barack Obama and the T-Mobile Bold

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE This could've come straight out of Germany where the BlackBerry Bold is already alive and well on T-Mobile's airwaves, but let's pretend for a moment that it didn't. Instead, let's assume that there are a select few copies of T-Mobile USA's Bold floating around in the wild, and one such example just happened to turn up at the Democratic National Convention a few weeks ago. We're not saying that's what's going on here, but... hey, are those beads of sweat forming on your forehead there, AT&T ? [Thanks, Vince C.] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Das BlackBerry Storm: Vodafone Germany sets up a waiting list

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS The list of carriers around the world with designs on selling both the Bold and the Storm is a pretty small list indeed. Actually, as far as we know, there's only one name on it right now -- Vodafone -- and a new page on Voda's German site confirms that the Storm is getting ready to unite with its keyboarded sib for a one-two punch of zesty BlackBerry flavor in the coming months. Verizon's presumed exclusive means that we won't likely see a similar lineup materialize in the States any time soon, but even from afar, it's got to give you a warm fuzzy to see two RIM models in a tearful reunion, doesn't it? • Verizon tells us all about the BlackBerry Storm's "WOW factors"

Filed under: Handsets , Features , RIM , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , UMTS , CDMA Flashy new slides circulating among Verizon staffers are calling out the Storm for everything that makes it just so darned Stormy, and the list is pretty impressive -- particularly the bit about the radios. As we've heard before, the Storm will pack CDMA / EV-DO Rev. A, quadband EDGE, and 2100MHz HSPA, making it one of the most global phones ever to hit the market. The list of "WOW factors" (Verizon's verbiage, not ours) doesn't stop there, though: we've also got a 3.25-inch 480 x 360 display dubbed "1/2 VGA+," which puts it just a notch above the Bold's 480 x 320 setup. The screen offers tactile feedback and auto-rotation to boot, plus you've got that 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera with flash, 1GB of onboard memory with microSD expansion -- an 8GB card is included in the box -- and "enhanced background noise cancellation." Turning our attention to software, RIM calls the Storm's web browsing experience "best in class," which is a good sign if those guys really know their competition, and we've got AGPS and visual voicemail (post-launch, sadly) in the pipe. Still no solid date on a launch for this blasted thing, but we'll be listening for... ahem , thunder. • RIM's BlackBerry Javelin 8900 gets pitched through an early review

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , GSM , EDGE The zany folks at CrackBerry have done the planet a kindness by posting up a short review -- though, it's anything but -- of RIM's newest unannounced set, the BlackBerry Javelin 8900. If you skim through the bit, you'll see words that hint they may like it, like "tight, sexy package" or "outperforms', though, reading more closely, we think they've completely fallen in love. The Javelin is compared to both the Curve and the venerable Bold and solidly trounces the Curve everywhere from screen, speed, OS, functionality, camera, form, and well, you get the idea. Even compared to the Bold it still stands out as being smaller, packing a better camera, more device memory, and even a higher resolution display. All these impressions are based on an early revision of the set, so we expect it'll get "awesomer" -- or something -- once it gets to retail. Follow the read link to get to the dirt, in this, the first of two parts on this new set. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T's BlackBerry Curve 8320 (and friends) make an appearance

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , RIM , Samsung , ATT , Symbian , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS If you've been jonesing for a few more shots of that trippy Samsung a637 that's starting to trickle into AT&T stores... well, here you are. We also have additional footage of Nokia's carrier-branded 6650 and 2600 classic , and new to this photo batch is the Curve 8320 , one-upping AT&T's existing 8300 with WiFi (not to say you'd really know it from a dummy model). A little something for everyone here, really. [Thanks, Andy C.] Gallery: AT&T's BlackBerry Curve 8320 (and friends) make an appearance Permalink | Email this | Comments
