  • Analyst sez iPhone 3G production could fall 40% in Q4

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Misc , Apple , OS X No clue if you've been paying attention the past few months, but quite a bit of belt tightening has been going on. Granted, Apple's been making out just fine , but a fresh report from the doors of FBR Research asserts that it may be cutting its Q4 iPhone 3G production in the wake of a global spending slowdown. It should be noted that a 10% cut was already on the table, making this 30% larger than anticipated. According to the report, the firm's reported decision to scale back production "suggests that the global macroeconomic weakness is impacting even high-end consumers, those that are more likely to buy Apple's expensive gadgets." As we restrain ourselves from thanking Captain Obvious , we should also point out that this may not be nearly as big a deal as the numbers make it seem -- maybe it overshot Q3 production in order to guarantee 100% service levels in all markets, for instance. How's that for analysis? [Via Silicon Alley Insider ] Analyst sez iPhone 3G production could fall 40% in Q4 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 20:02:00 EST. • iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Storm and Bold compared on video: awkward...

Filed under: Handsets , RIM , ATT , Verizon Wireless , GSM , EDGE , EV-DO , HSDPA , CDMA , Apple , OS X One might think that the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Storm could get along together, but similar to twin brothers who both aspire to graduate Magna Laude from an Ivy league school, these two aren't exactly the most loving of siblings. Oh, and toss in that iPhone 3G -- which played a huge role in helping Apple sell more phones than RIM last quarter -- and you've got yourself a bona fide mess. Check out all three getting shoved up on one another in the name of comparison just after the break. It's a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll get used to it. • Keepin' it real WTF, Part II: Russian iPhone "boots up," does nothing else

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , EDGE , Apple , OS X It's been a long time coming, but we've finally found a KIRF suitable to become the one and only successor to our very first " Keepin' it real... WTF?! " This here iPhone -- which is little more than a familiar chassis with a lead weight and a small amount of internal hardware -- is reportedly used by scammers in Russia in order to barter for train tickets, grub, etc. In essence, the phone has just enough electronics within it to give the appearance of a "boot up" sequence, complete with the Apple logo; the scammer in possession of it then explains that the battery is simply drained, but that it will work perfectly fine once charged. After any given sucker hands over something quite valuable in exchange for this heap, he / she proceeds to crush it into a million pieces while cursing the unknown name of whoever fooled them in the first place. Moral of the story? Stay sharp , street traders. [Thanks, Abhijit] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • China Mobile could deactivate 3G / WiFi on iPhone 3G launch

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Apple , OS X , China Mobile Currently, over 400,000 unlocked iPhones are roaming around China. Now that China Mobile is about to officially launch Apple's latest handset in the world's most populous country, we can only imagine that figure going up. In a bizarre twist of trying to keep a homegrown 3G standard ( TD-SCDMA ) alive, the carrier has announced that it is intending to launch the mobile with WiFi and 3G disabled -- a move that would make it less appealing to those who may be considering buying one, unlocking it and using it on the expected W-CDMA network from China Telecom. Uncool, China Mobile. Very uncool. [Via mocoNews ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • AT&T talks about linking iPhone with U-verse, home control

Filed under: Handsets , Multimedia , Software , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Misc , Apple , OS X We've already seen that Apple's iPhone is a mighty fine home controller , but it looks as if AT&T bigwigs are just now getting wind of that. At a recent event where the company showcased some of its newly developed technology, it talked up eventually linking the iPhone and its fiber-based U-verse service. More specifically, the iPhone could be used "as a remote control," and iPhone owners could also listen to voicemails on their television or watch recorded shows on their handset. There's no word on when said features could eventually be rolled out, but may we implore AT&T to spend more on U-verse expansion before making it even more awesome for those lucky enough to have it? • Pre-owned iPhones fetching crazy prices post-iPhone 3G launch

Filed under: Handsets , ATT , GSM , EDGE , Apple , OS X This little phenomenon has been going on ever since lines were wrapped around buildings as consumers waited impatiently for the iPhone 3G, but even now, original iPhones are fetching wild prices on the secondhand market. In a weird twist of economics, Apple's iPhone actually maintained the majority of its value even after its successor hit the market. Why, you ask? Put simply, first-gen iPhones purchased from eBay or other pre-owned resellers arrives sans an AT&T contract, and of course, it can be (relatively) easily unlocked to work with some other carrier. PSA: if you're still sitting on your old iPhone for no apparent reason, now would probably be an excellent time to test the market. • AT&T sees massive data network outage on East Coast

AT&T has been struggling to keep up with demand on its data network since the launch of the iPhone 3G. Tests and speculation have all but absolved the iPhone 3G of any inherent defect as the root of sluggish data network performance on AT&T’s 3G network. At this point, AT&T’s recently upgraded 3G network is [...]
  • O2 announces iPhone 3G Pay & Go pricing / launch date

Filed under: Handsets , O2 , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Apple , OS X We've known that a pay-as-you-go iPhone 3G plan was in the works at O2 since June , but the carrier has at long last fessed up and provided the formal introduction. The iPhone 3G Pay & Go plan will be live on September 16th, enabling users in the UK to purchase the handset sans contract for £349.99 (8GB) or £399.99 (16GB). Yeah, it's quite a bit more than free on contract , but those prices do include unlimited browsing and WiFi for the first 12 months after the phone is activated. Once that honeymoon ends, you're looking at £10 per month to keep browsing. Also of note, Visual Voicemail is conveniently omitted from Pay & Go phones, but if you're cool with that, you can get going in a fortnight by heading to your local O2, Apple or Carphone Warehouse store. • India's Airtel claims "deadliest hackers" still can't crack its iPhone 3G

Filed under: Handsets , Software , GSM , EDGE , Apple , OS X Hey, hackers! Now that we've got the attention of millions upon millions of incredibly talented individuals, here's your next challenge. India's Airtel -- which is offering Apple's iPhone 3G at a near-stratospheric price -- has claimed that "even the most deadly hackers on the planet won't be able to crack the codes that support the iPhone's Airtel applications with rival company SIMs." Just so you know, it appears that Airtel worked with Apple to develop "operator-specific iPhone applications," which is an interesting tidbit in and of itself. But let's focus on the task at hand here, and that's proving that making ridiculous claims about impenetrability always comes back to bite ya . • Singaporean iPhone 3Gs drop visual voicemail, iTunes

Filed under: Handsets , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Apple Just how badly do you want the iPhone 3G , Singapore? Badly enough to do without two of its headline features? SingTel kicks off sales today (local time) along with a whole host of other countries , but neither visual voicemail nor the iTunes WiFi Store will make the cut. In the case of iTunes, the reason is kinda obvious: Singapore has no iTunes Store at all, and it never has. The explanation behind the mysterious absence of visual voicemail is less clear, other than carrier laziness in getting the feature implemented on its back end. The silver lining here seems to be pricing, though -- subscribers will be able to pick up the phone for diddly squat, assuming they sign up for a S$205 monthly package (about $145). • iPhone 3G starting at $700 in India, lines to be nonexistent

Filed under: Handsets , Vodafone , GSM , EDGE , Apple , OS X Though we can't definitively say this will end up being the priciest iPhone 3G this side of eBay, there's a good chance it will be. Word has it that Vodafone will be offering up Apple's latest 8GB handset for a mind-boggling Rs 31,000 ($712), or Rs 36,100 ($830) for the 16 gigger. Why so serious high? Because neither Vodafone nor Airtel will subsidize the phone, and to add insult to injury, there's not even a 3G highway up and running in India. • AT&T now hawking iPhone 3Gs online to biz customers

Filed under: Handsets , ATT , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Apple If you're fortunate enough to have access to a Premier (business, that is) account with AT&T, you're now able to forgo the charade of meandering down to your local store to buy -- or place an order for, more likely -- the iPhone 3G . All three varieties of the best cellphone Apple makes are now available directly through the carrier's B2B online store for the usual $199 / $299 pricing scale; if we had to guess, it's just a matter of time before they'll throw the doors open to the riff raff (read: us), too. We'll drink to that. [Thanks, Vasudev R.] Permalink | Email this | Comments
