  • Nokia N95-8GB version 30 update - umm… not much changed!

OK so that was rather dull…. I just updated the N95-8GB to the latest v30 software, and really not that much has changed at all! • The iPhone 3G battery is ***

My iPhone 3G is behaving like a total dog when it comes to battery power. I got on the train at 10:11am with full battery, right? I switched on the mp3 player, I checked some email, I arsed about on Facebook, I located myself a few times, blah de blah. I generally ‘used’ the device [...]
  • Twitterific hits iPhone

  • Apple's iPhone OS 2.0 beta firmware shows push email capability - iPhone OS 2.0 getting .Mac push email support?

While BlackBerry users are busting out emails in real-time with the BlackBerry push email service, iPhone users are left to deal with a few third-party applications to enable push-email over their Outlook Exchange servers. Oh, and there's also Yahoo's iPhone push email support, but that service has been notoriously unreliable in dealing with real-time email [...]
  • Motorola patent application shows foldable/rollable display/keyboard

Flexible displays and devices are the future. Rollable e-ink newspapers, flexible displays , we’ll be seeing a lot of them in the coming years. And, following on that READIUS foldable mobile device from Polymer Vision, an older Motorola patent application regarding a flexible display/keyboard has surfaced. Motorola’s taking the whole “flexible” idea to the next level. Not only is the display flexible/rollable, the keyboard rolls up with display as well. Since a rollable display does little good when the keyboard is as stiff as the stick keeping Steve Ballmer’s backside nice and rigid, Motorola has devised a method whereby the keyboard portion of the device is filled with an electrorheological fluid (a fluid that becomes semi-solid when an electrical current is applied to it) - allowing it to fold up along with the display. When an electrical current is passed through the keyboard (presumably when the keyboard has been unrolled), the fluid materializes into a temporary keyboard. Stop the flow of electricity, and the keyboard reverts back to its fluidic state. Genius. The flexible portion of the device will be housed in a rigid casing, but with the benefit of having a flexible display and keyboard, the casing need not be much bigger than a box of matches (in other words, really, really small). • Sprint and Microsoft announce new Live Search application that knows your location

Mobile search applications like Microsoft’s Live Search sure are handy, aren’t they? Well, they’re about to get a lot handier. Microsoft has teamed up with Sprint to roll out a new Live Search client that uses location-based information to help you find the nearest pizzeria or nail salon (for that emergency mani-pedi that you might find yourself needing). The trick thing about the new Live Search is the way location information is calculated. Sprint and Microsoft have extended the Live Search functionality to use cell-tower triangulation for calculating a user’s position. Without the need for GPS modules, cell-tower triangulation opens up the world of location-based mobile search to a wider array of mobile phones. Starting today, all Live Search mobile searches on Sprint’s network will incorporate location information. Users of Sprint’s five high-end mobile phones will also be able to use the new Microsoft Live Search client by speaking their search terms into the phone’s microphone - no more endless tapping away at the RAZR’s numeric keypad. The lineup of voice-compatible phones includes the Samsung a900 and a920, the Motorola RAZR, the Sanyo 840, and the LG 550. We’re expecting the location-based Microsoft Live Search to hit other carriers soon, so keep an eye out. Cell-tower triangulation really is the best way to get positional information without a cumbersome GPS module - it isn’t the most accurate way to get location data, but it’s close enough for mobile searches. Not to mention that location information can even be calculated in dense-urban environments where high-rise building can hinder GPS performance. We like it.
