  • Mio kinda mimics Samsung's approach to phones - one side phone, other side GPS

You’ve probably already heard a number of stories that pure portable navigation devices (PND) are bound to die in the coming years. So it doesn’t surprises the leading PND manufacturers want to get into the handset market and release either its software for the popular smartphone platforms (something TomTom and Garmin already did) or even make their own GPS-equipped devices. That being said, Navigadget spotted the Mio’s upcoming GPS equipped phone at this year’s CES. Similarly to Samsung’s approach with the UpStage ( B’Phone ), the device pictured above has two faces. But unlike the UpStage which reserves one face for music and the other for phone, Mio’s device puts navigation instead of music. The end result is large screen navigation device that’s also the mobile phone. Cool approach, don’t you think? Finally, in case you’re wondering, we’ve no idea when the Mio GPS phone will be available nor which markets it will target… ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:Mio plans to go mobile next yearMiTAC Mio A702 - Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional smartphone with GPSMiTAC Mio A501 Digi-WalkerLG Wave brings A-GPS to Alltel - mid-range phone with assisted GPSThe world's luxury phones gallery
  • Motorola scores multiple awards at CES

Samsung may lead the pack with the number of awards won at this year’s CES , but Motorola’s products also scored few points. Among all MOTO products, it’s the ROKR E8 phone which shined the most, receiving four awards - including the prestigious CNET People’s Voice Award. Other Moto’s awarded products include, MOTOROKR S9 and Motorola T815 which took top honors in the 2008 CES Best of Innovations Design and Engineering Award and Bluetooth SIG Award, respectively. Additional eight Motorola’s products were also awarded, and in total the American handset maker took 14 awards… Full release follows after the jump. ROKR E8 received four prestigious awards including the CNET People’s Voice Award, while the MOTOROKR S9 and Motorola T815 each took top honors in the 2008 CES Best of Innovations Design and Engineering Award and Bluetooth Special Interest Group Award, respectively. • 13 Samsung handsets named CES Innovations 2008 Design and Engineering Awards

At this year’s CES, it was Samsung which shined more than any other handset manufacturer, as the Korean giant received 13 International CES Innovations 2008 Design and Engineering Awards. In the wireless handset accessories category, the Samsung UbiCell was named the Best of Innovations, which is awarded to the most highly honored products in each category. In addition, four of Samsung’s Bluetooth headsets were awarded as honorees — including the Bang & Olufsen designed WEP420 , WEP410 (the one I have), small quarter-sized WEP500 , and the WEP430 , a headset that wraps around the ear and holds the headset in a “smooth, flat place over the ear canal.” Eight of Samsung’s handsets received Design and Engineering Honorees in the wireless handsets category — including the UpStage (SPH-m620), Juke (SCH-u470), SCH-i760 , FlipShot (SCH-u900), SCH-u620 , Blast (SGH-t729), BlackJack II (SGH-i617) and Fin (SPH-a513). ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:Jabra showcases latest Bluetooth headsets; Receives award at CESLive pics of the new Sony Ericsson lineup from CES 2008 - W760, W350, Z555Samsung SPH-M800 getting primped for SprintSamsung F490 and Samsung P720 spotted in the wildIntoMobile in Las Vegas - CES 2008
  • iRiver preparing to launch its own handset; Shows some very "familiar interface" on CES

I do believe the pure media players are counting their last days. There may be room for video-centric devices with larger screens even in the future, but having a separate music/MP3 player is kinda obsolete these days. iRiver knows that, hence they’re working on their own handset. According to PC Magazine , they’ll be rolling out their first mobile phone in the coming months. The iPhone like device will feature the 3″ 480×272 touchscreen, 4GB of flash store, 2 MP camera that can also record video, built in GPS and some (unspecified) mobile TV receiver. We’ve no idea what radios iRiver will put inside the phone, but given the fact they’re competing with Apple, it’s better for them to bundle both 3G and WiFi radios inside. Finally, iRiver’s Owen Kwon promises the upcoming device will be “more affordable” than the iPhone. Now let’s just wait and see what these guys can do… [Via: Engadget Mobile ] ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:Apple Store starts prepping for iPhone launch with giant iPhone displays!Meizu's MiniOne M8 user interface looks too familiar?Symbian handset manufacturers at the CESAT&T to launch red BlackBerry Curve 8310?The Official Nokia CES Flickr Set
  • Samsung launches the Samsung SGH-F490

Samsung’s been movin’ and shakin’ to show of their TV’s, DVD players, and home theater what-nots during CES 2008 Las Vegas, but they hadn’t really done anything new in the mobile space. That is, until today. Samsung used this last day of CES to bring the Samsung SGH-F490 to reality. You may remember this iPhone-esque handset’s sibling, the Samsung F700 Croix that we mentioned a few times previously . With a 3.2 touchscreen display (with that pseudo-haptic feedback setup), 5 megapixel camera, 130MB on board storage, and 3.5mm headphone jack, the Samsung SGH-F490 is no slouch in the performance department. Unfortunately, it will be a slouch in the connectivity department - with a lowly tri-band GSM/EDGE (850/1800/1900Mhz) radio and HSDPA in the Euro-only (2100Mhz) band we’re going to have a hard time bringing the Samsung F490 into the mainstream US market. Thankfully, the Samsung F490 is outfitted with the company’s award-winning Croix interface - but we’re not sure if the F490 uses that fake haptic feedback system on the Samsung F700. We’d like a more accurate feedback system that actuates vibrations or clicks under the position of input or contact, rather than having the entire backside of the device vibrating in response to on-screen inputs. Look for this 115mm x 53.5mm x 11.8mm (4.5″ x 2.1 x .5″) device to launch in February for around €530 (about $780). • White Palm Centro does GSM at CES 2008 Las Vegas

While Palm is working hard to keep their next Centro under wraps, a little-known accessory vendor at CES 2008 Las Vegas managed to let slip a White Palm Centro. The handset is GSM and most likely headed for AT&T, but doesn’t look like the other Palm Centro that we believed was headed to Big Blue . It stands to reason that Palm would bring a Centro to AT&T, and with the Black and Red color schemes already tapped by Sprint, the new White color scheme seems like a lock for the GSM version. We’re not fans of the White and Gray color scheme that you see here, however. A dash of color (maybe some Orange or Green) would do the GSM Palm Centro some good. What do you say, Palm? • Bluetooth SIG's Best of CES Contest winners announced

Bluetooth SIG announced the winners of its third annual Best of CES Contest to highlight the “hottest, most innovative and consumer friendly Bluetooth enabled products,” and to get some media attention, we might add. Anyway, 48 new Bluetooth products were submitted in categories focusing on what consumers can do with the technology - talk on a headset, input information, listen to music, transfer information, or use in an industrial or other vertical environment. After “carefully testing” each of the products, Bluetooth SIG picked the winners: Overall - Samsung P2 Widescreen Music Player Headset - Plantronics Voyager 855 Bluetooth Stereo Headset (finalist: Motorola MotoPURE H12) Input - Logitech Cordless Desktop MX5500 Revolution Keyboard (finalist: Newton Peripherals MoGo Mouse X54 Pro) Music - Parrot DS1120 Bluetooth Speakers (finalist: Samsung P2 Widescreen Music Player; honorable mention Motorola RAZR2 V9) Transfer - Motorola T815 (finalist: Samsung SGH-i617 Blackjack II) Vertical - Ford SYNC, powered by Microsoft Auto (finalist: Baracoda ScanWear; honorable mention Motorola MotoROKR T505) It’s not exactly the “pure” mobile phone news, but it’s cool enough… The official release is available from here . ---Related Articles at IntoMobile:e61life's Theme Contest 2006 winnersAnnouncing the winners of our IntoMobile Bluetooth Giveaway!Wireless Innovation Contest 2007Wireless Innovation Contest 2007Flash Lite Contest 2006
  • Panasonic Lumix wireless digital camera to upload photos to Google's Picasa using T-Mobile hotspots

This isn’t exactly the “pure” mobile phones news, but since the big carrier is involved, we’re publishing it nevertheless. Panasonic has teamed up with T-Mobile for its new wireless digital camera called Lumix. The idea is to allow users to upload photos directly from the camera to Google’s Picasa service using T-Mobile HotSpot service. We like how it sounds, as with this kind of camera you won’t have to worry about the lack of space on the memory card — simply upload photos to Picasa, delete them, and voila… more space is available for new photos. And best of all, once released — and we don’t know the release date nor price — the Lumix will come bundled with T-Mobile HotSpot service subscription for 12 months. Nice! PRESS RELEASE - Panasonic, the leading brand by which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is best known, today highlighted the development of a LUMIX digital camera with wireless network connectivity, complete with integrated access to T-Mobile HotSpot service and the ability to send photos directly to Picasa Web Albums, a free online photo-sharing service from Google. Panasonic collaborated with T- Mobile Hotspot and used Picasa Web Albums’ APIs to develop a new and optimal online environment for photo sharing. After taking digital photos with the new LUMIX, users will be able to upload their photos directly to Picasa Web Albums through the T-Mobile HotSpot service. The LUMIX comes with complimentary access to T-Mobile HotSpot service for 12 months. After uploading, they can receive an email with a URL link to their photos, which they can then share with family and friends. In addition, users can confirm photos have been successfully loaded to Picasa Web Albums and can delete photos directly from the digital camera, eliminating the concern that photos have or have not been uploaded. Panasonic has collaborated closely with T-Mobile to enable quick and easy digital photo uploading...

  • Sony Mylo 2 officially announced

Sony’s Mylo 2 is officially out and it looks just the way we thought it will . And while it’s perceived as a direct competitor to Nokia Internet Tablet series, Sony will most probably market the new Mylo to the different audience. The price seems right (about $300), so this time Sony may actually have a winner. As for the specs, there’s the 3.5″ 800×480 touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 1.3 MP camera, WiFi, 1GB of internal memory, and of course the Memory Stick Duo storage expansion slot. We’ve no idea how much RAM nor which CPU Mylo 2 uses, but in its release, Sony’s mentioning Mylo 2 can play YouTube videos, hence we think the CPU’s clock works at 400 MHz or higher. In terms of pre-installed software, there’s a web browser (not sure which one though), RSS reader, widgets, Skype, instant messaging client (AIM, Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, and Google Talk are supported), media player app, text editor and other basic applications. Later this year, Sony will create a developer website and provide an SDK, which should lead to more applications available in the future. Finally, the availability - Sony Mylo 2 will start selling at the end of this month for about $300. The package will also include a free access to Wayport’s WiFi network that includes 9000 McDonald’s, hotels, airports and other venues… Full release after the jump. PRESS RELEASE - For anyone who lives their life online with multiple social circles and struggles to get enough time on their home computer, Sony’s mylo communicator supports the popular web entertainment applications of a PC, in a pocketable broadband device.
