  • FCC: CDMA variant of HTC Touch Diamond shows itself

We love a good FCC-blessing every now and again. It's always nice to know that the good folks in some non-descript government laboratory are working hard to make sure that the newest and coolest gadgets with radio transmitters don't fry our brains in to oblivion. And, to make sure CDMA users don't get zapped into [...]
  • FCC shows HTC NEON 400 - CDMA HTC Touch Dual on the way?

The CDMA market isn't exactly HTC's bread-and-butter market, what with GSM handsets being the way to go for most of the developed world, but that doesn't mean the Taiwanese smartphone maker isn't going to give the US some touchscreen Windows Mobile love. Spotted hanging out with the FCC's laboratory engineers, the HTC NEON400 hints at [...]
  • Nokia goes after US with “lots of devices”

The US has always been a bit of a thorn in the side of the US - it’s never managed to get a real foothold over there and it’s been losing market share hand over fist. But not one to give up, it’s revealed that it’s planning to get more handsets into the US, according [...]
  • Sprint keeps riding the data-wave with CDMA/EVDO variant of HTC Shift

Sprint is really looking to expand its data-side services, and it makes sense, given their struggles in the traditional voice-call market. Sprint is apparently going to pickup the CDMA/EVDO version of the HTC Shift. We knew that the HTC Shift was a-comin' in GSMCDMA flavors (thanks, FCC) , and it seems that Sprint will have [...]
  • FCC shows Samsung Z400 - Samsung's first Direct-Connect handset for Sprint

The FCC is always good for getting the down-low on un-announced, un-released handsets. It looks like Samsung is getting into the DirectConnect game. How Sprint managed to convince Samsung to hop on-board its struggling CDMA-based DirectConnect bandwagon is beyond us - although, it’s a better wagon to hop aboard than Nextel’s dying iDEN network. The Samsung Z400 will be rebranding Qualcomm’s QChat PTT technology for use as Sprint’s DirectConnect. We’re not used to seeing a DirectConnect handset on Sprint Nextel that didn’t bear a Motorola logo, but hey, times are a-changin’. The FCC has just dropped the ball on Samsung’s Z400, the company’s first DirectConnect handset destined for Sprint. With a rugged casing, OLED external display, dual-antenna setup, stereo speakers, Bluetooth, EVDO and camera, the Samsung Z400 looks to be headed to Sprint’s mid-range lineup - destined to pull duty as a blue-collar fleet-phone. Oh, and a quick peak at the user’s manual reveals a “Chat and Dating” service - interesting indeed. Pricing and availability are not yet known. • HTC Touch headed to Alltel

Fancy an iPhone but hate the prospect of giving in to that cult-of-Apple or jumping network-ship for AT&T? Well, if you’re a Sprint or Telus customer, then you likely already enjoying the CDMA alternative to the iPhone, the HTC Touch. Unfortunately, if you are on Alltel’s network, you’ll just have to find another way to quench your sleek, touchscreen thirst. That is, until the HTC Touch is offered on your particular flavor of CDMA. Well, you may not have to wait much longer. It looks like Alltel is set to pick up the HTC Touch – and it should hit your network in about a week. But, playing on the sharper edge of mobile technology doesn’t come cheap – expect to shell out a penny shy of $200 with 2-year contract and applicable rebates, or about $500 outright (sans contract). • Samsung launches first Indian CDMA handset on the open market - Samsung Max

Samsung’s going after the Asian cash-cow that is the Indian wireless market by releasing the CDMA Samsung Max as an open-market mobile phone offering. Hyundai Kim, Vice President and Head of the CDMA Division at Samsung Telecommunications India Pvt. Ltd., said, “We expect to fuel the growth of the Indian CDMA industry through the launch Samsung Max in the open market. Fully feature loaded Samsung Max is launched to serve the Multimedia needs of the CDMA consumer. The availability of CDMA phones in the open market will provide Indian consumers freedom to choose network operator’s of their choice.” The Samsung Max will be bringing a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, R-UIM card support, expandable memory, FM radio, voice recorder, MP3 player, and a 1.9-inch display to Tata Indicom and Reliance Mobile subscribers. Customers will be able to choose either CDMA carrier as their wireless provider - such is the beauty of an open-market phone. Indians in Delhi and Mumbai can get their hands on the Samsung Max for Rs. 7,500, with several other large cities expected to get the handset by December 2007. • Motorola RIZR Z6c clears FCC, headed towards Verizon

Talk about a truly global-capable phone. The Motorola RIZR Z6c has just gotten the green-light from the FCC , and should be bringing all that GSM and CDMA goodness to Verizon’s network sometime soon. GSM and CDMA on Verizon’s network? Did Verizon launch some sort of undercover GSM network while we weren’t looking? Not a chance. Verizon’s more than happy with their CDMA stance in the US wireless landscape, but with most of the world using GSM technology, it makes sense for Verizon to bring a world phone on board with the ability to surf those GSM airwaves abroad. The Motorola RIZR Z6c slider (as the name would suggest) will be rocking the same 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, microSD card slot, and QVGA display from its MediaFLO and VCAST TV sporting sibling - the Motorola RIZR Z6tv . Verizon will be adding the Moto RIZR Z6c to its “World Edition” stable (alongside the recently released BlackBerry 8830 ) - the dual-band CDMA radio with EVDO and dual-band 900/1800 MHz GSM radio ensures that the Motorola RIZR Z6c “World Edition” will be comfortable in pretty much any country on this planet. We’re not sure when this thing’s going to go live on Verizon’s network. But, with the holiday season rapidly coming to a close, this FCC approval might expedite the Motorola RIZR Z6c’s launch. With that cool-looking, embossed rear (it’s all about the little details), we can’t wait to get our hands on this thing. • Alltel picks up the BlackBerry 8130 Pearl with GPS

It looks like Alltel’s keeping up with its larger wireless rivals. The recently launched CDMA BlackBerry 8130 Pearl with that glorious integrated GPS receiver will be making its way to Alltel’s network sporting an “amethyst” color scheme. Expect the Alltel BlackBerry 8130 Pearl to pack in all the same hardware as its Sprint and Verizon kin - which is to say that it’ll rock GPS, EVDO, 2 megapixel camera, microSDHC card slot, and that SureType keyboard. Alltel says they’ll be launching their BlackBerry 8130 Pearl in time for the holiday shopping season (which is quite literally upon us), so look for this new Pearl to drop fairly soon. Oh, and it’ll cost you $150 after a $100 rebate (2-year contract required, of course). • Nokia launches low-end CDMA candybar for North America - Nokia 2135

It looks like Nokia is really starting to take the North American mass-market seriously. The Finnish handset giant has just launched their entry-level CDMA monoblock in the Nokia 2135. As a “low-ender,” the Nokia 2135 doesn’t really shine in the feature-department, but it gets the job done. With 1xRTT data, speakerphone, 3.5 hours of talktime and 11 hours of stand-by time, the Nokia 2135 is “not too much, not too little, but just right.” We’re looking for this super-affordable Nokia candybar to hit US CDMA carriers in the near-term - as in this month. We need more power from our handsets, but as a low-cost, or even free, offering from the likes of Sprint or Verizon, the Nokia 2135 could be an attractive option to the mass-market. Oh, and get this, we’re hearing that the Nokia 2135 wasn’t made by Nokia. Sure, Nokia designed the hardware and UI, but the component integration was handed off to an unknown company. Anyone know who actually manufactured this thing? • RIM announces CDMA BlackBerry Pearl 8130 - the BlackBerry Pearl 2.0 with GPS

Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the venerable BlackBerry lineup of smartphones, has finally announced their anticipated BlackBerry Pearl 2.0 as the CDMA BlackBerry Pearl 8130. The update to the Pearl lineup is the first BlackBerry Pearl for email addicts on a CDMA network (Verizon/Sprint). We’re expecting the BlackBerry 8130 to bring some updated software to the CDMA-table. The new OS will feature a new Browser (with a “ Page View” option that displays the entire website and a magnifying glass that let’s you zoom in on different sections) , new font-rendering (making smaller fonts easier to read), and a revamped Inbox application. But it doesn’t end there. As expected , the BlackBerry Pearl 2.0 (8130) will rock integrated GPS and navigation with BlackBerry maps. And, the SureType keyboard, stereo Bluetooth, microSD slot, and 3.5mm headphone jack will be complemented with a new, 2 megapixel camera. Look for CDMA carriers to pick up this new BlackBerry Pearl 8130 next month - which bodes well for our leaked information that Sprint will be launching this BlackBerry Pearl 2.0 over the Thanksgiving Day Weekend . Pricing is not yet available. • Motorola reveals two new Nextel phones - i335 and ic602

Following on the heels of news that Sprint has made a major breakthrough in integrating the Nextel “chirp” feature into it’s CDMA network, Motorola has released a couple new iDEN phones - the ic603 being a hybrid iDEN/CDMA handset. The i335 is marketed as an entry-level candy-bar with a rubbery finish. Not much else to mention on that front, other than the i335 bears a striking resemblance to the i290 that we showed you a little while ago . The rubbery finish and sleek styling are a welcome departure from the normally staid designs we’ve seen in the past - even if it is on a low-end handset that lacks a camera. The ic602 is a mid-range hybrid Nextel/Sprint combo-phone. The clamshell is bulky and even has an ugly antenna, as we have come to expect from iDEN phones - but it will work on CDMA and iDEN networks, dramatically increasing the coverage range of the phones. The ic602 is reported to be packing EVDO, and a 2 megapixel camera, but no memory card slot or music-player. Both handsets are expected to launch later this year. Pricing is not yet known. We’re a bit surprised to see Motorola still pumping out iDEN phones, considering the iDEN network is rumored to be slated for commercial shutdown in the near future. And, speaking of which, why would Sprint want to merge the “chirp” feature from a network that is rumored to be doomed for re-purposing?
