  • iPhone update will enable WiFi iTunes Store on iPhones, will cripple unlocked handsets

It’s official. Apple has announced that they will indeed be releasing another iPhone update later this week. The iPhone firmware v1.1.1 (1.0.3) is slated to enable the WiFi iTunes Music Store that will give iPhone owners the ability to purchase and download any music from Apple’s premium music service. Of course, you’ll have to have a WiFi connection handy (you wouldn’t want to download a 5MB track with EDGE speeds, would you?). There’s one more detail that’s sure to get early iPhone unlockers in a tizzy. Apple has also announced that applying this forthcoming update to any unlocked iPhone may cripple/disable/damage your precious handset’s firmware, permanently. Apparently, according to Apple, the unlocking software that is currently available does permanent and irepairable harm to the iPhone’s firmware. So, if you’re one of those brave souls that took the plunge and unlocked your iPhone already, you might want to “re-lock” (reverse the unlock process) your iPhone before running the iPhone update. If you’re daring enough, you might want to check out Into iPhone’s guide to re-locking your iPhone, or just wait for the iPhone Dev Team (you know, the same guys that brought us the iUnlock solution ) to release their re-lock tool within a week. We recommend waiting on the iPhone Dev Team’s re-lock solution. • iPhoneSIMfree starts selling wholesale licenses for iPhone unlocking software

It looks like iPhoneSIMfree has made good on their promise to deliver their iPhone unlocking software solution. Too bad it’s only available in bulk to resellers. Apparently, iPhoneSIMfree wants to help keep its third-party reseller partners in business by ensuring that anyone wanting an unlocked iPhone will likely have to buy either a new, unlocked iPhone from them, or pay for the unlocking service. iPhoneSIMfree has started to send out emails to resellers, offering them the opportunity to buy wholesale lots of software licenses that would allow them to unlock iPhones. The process requires the unocking agent to install the “.app” unlocking software onto the target iPhone, register the iPhone’s information with iPhoneSIMfree’s back office system, and then have the iPhone connect to iPhoneSIMfree’s servers over a WiFi connection. The process is mostly automated and should result in an iPhone that’s freed from AT&T’s evil grasp. The day of the AT&T-less iPhone is nigh! Hit up our sister-site Into iPhone to take a gander at the email that has been sent out to resellers. • Apple iPhone gets software unlocked - finally!

It’s finally happened. Not even a day after we brought you that hardware unlock solution for the iPhone (from geohot), the intrepid iPhone hackers over at iPhoneSIMfree.com announced their full software unlock solution for the Apple iPhone. Unlike geohot’s hardware unlock, there are no risky circuit solders to deal with - an unlock iPhone is just a few mouse clicks away. We knew the software solution was on the way, but we had no idea that we’d have an actual, working method so soon. Engadget got their hands on a preview copy of the unlocking software, and they can confirm that the unlock is 100% functional - everything works perfectly, with the exception of AT&T’s proprietary Visual Voicemail feature. The Engadget test-iPhone was freed from AT&T’s evil grasp and signed on to the T-Mobile network. The iPhoneSIMfree.com software unlock is restore resistant, but we’ll have to wait and see if Apple will be able to update the iPhone in such a way as to render this unlock solution useless. Stay tuned, we’ll keep updating this space as more information becomes available! • Stop calling the specially formatted mobile websites on the iPhone applications!

Blogging about the iPhone is a popular thing to do, for many reasons. You have the people who think the iPhone is a gift from god without realizing it is probably the most locked device to ever be released on to the market, you have the people who think that the mobile websites built on jawsome Web 2.0 scripting languages are cool and then you have the people who know about the first two groups and try to build something that will get them written about on TechCrunch and increase their Adsense revenue at the end of the month. Yes the iPhone is beautiful, yes the iPhone has a large screen which makes these “applications” work well, but to call the iPhone a revolutionary product because of that is simply false. The iPhone’s web browser is built on the WebKit browser engine , something that every Nokia owner running the the last few versions of the S60 operating system have had for some time now. Nokia published a press release on April 16 of this year announcing their new “widgets” platform for S60 that uses their WebKit based browser implementation. I put the word widgets in quotation marks because at first I thought what you’re probably thinking right now, who the hell cares about widgets, right? Widgets is Nokia’s way of saying that they are letting web developers build applications in scripting and mark up languages (AJAX, HTML) that they already know, instead of having to learn how to program in Symbian.c++ which can cause your brain to explode. Nokia’s widgets = iPhone’s applications. Did I mention that unlike the iPhone they can run offline? There are two podcasts that developers and enthusiastic users alike should listen to, the first one being an interview with Ganesh Silverman about what S60 Widgets can do and what the future holds in terms of added functionality such as interfacing with the data and hardware in your mobile phone. The second is a panel discussion with Niklas von Knorring and Petrus Lundqvist...
  • Apple prepping first iPhone software update for release

IntoMobile It’s been about a month and Apple is prepping the first release of iPhone updates. We’ve been looking for the first update to enable iChat features and possibly even MMS support, so imagine our excitement when we heard that the upcoming update might include new widgets, chat client, location-based services, MMS support, and maybe even some Mac OS X Leopard integration! Greg Joswiak, Apple VP of iPod Product Marketing, told RBC Captial Markets analysts Mike Abramsky that “An iPhone update patch is expected shortly.” However, there’s no word on Microsoft Exchange integration - but that doesn’t mean it’s not coming, or slated for a subsequent update. Now, if only we could get 3G enabled on the iPhone. Alas, there are no hidden 3G chips to enable, and Abramsky believes that the 3G version of the iPhone will not be available (even in Europe) until Spring of 2008. Thanks, Apple! We love the fact that our iPhones can be easily updated through a simple download, rather than waiting months for a whole new firmware version. When Steve Jobs said the iPhone would be the first cell phone to bring the full internet experience in the palm of your hand you could hear millions of S60 users around the world producing a faint moan. • Apple iTunes will sync your existing data to the iPhone!

That's right, not only will the iPhone be activated through Apple's iTunes music software, iTunes will be used to transfer your contacts, email, calendar, music, photos, podcasts, and video to your iPhone! We were somewhat skeptical on Apple's requirement to use iTunes with the iPhone. But, with features like convenient, at-home activation and contact transfers, [...]
