  • AT&T "doubling" 3G network in anticipation of iPhone 3G data demands

If there's one thing that AT&T learned from last year's EDGE network-overload, it's that mobs and hoards of over-eager iPhone owners are apt to overload the No. 1 US wireless carrier's data network. So, on the eve of the US iPhone 3G launch, AT&T has announced that it is "doubling" the capacity of their 3G [...]

  • AT&T: 20Mbps 3G network by 2009 - HSPA release 7, here we come!

While many AT&T customers are enjoying the No. 1 US carrier's HSDPA (HSPA in some areas) 3G network, AT&T's 3G speeds are still relatively slow compared to their counterparts in Europe and Asia. Following AT&T's HSUPA upgrade to their 3G network this year (creating a true HSPA network), Big Blue has announced on Wednesday that [...]

  • AT&T 3G network slated for massive expansion in 2008 - preparing for 3G iPhone?

Love AT&T’s 3G network performance? Hate AT&T’s 3G network reliability and coverage? Right, us too. But, fear not, AT&T-fan. The No. 1 national wireless carrier has announced that they’ve got some massive 3G upgrades planned for 2008 - again . As expected, AT&T will be turning up the dial on their HSPA network and offering coverage in 80 new cities - bringing the grand total of HSPA-covered areas to 350. The announcement times perfectly with the FCC’s approval of the AT&T acquisition of Aloha’s 12Mhz slice of the 700Mhz spectrum. AT&T has ear-marked this extra bandwidth for “broadcast video or for two-way communications such as voice, data or multicast content,” and expanding their 3G HSPA network falls directly in the “data” category. The network upgrade will bring 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps downlink speeds and 500Kbps to 800Kbps uplink speeds to even more parts of the country. And, after most of AT&T’s network gets the HSPA-treatment, the AT&T 3G network will be ready for inevitable HSPA+ upgrades. Of course, all these upgrades are just milestones on the path towards AT&T’s eventual 4G LTE network rollout in 2009 at the earliest, with 2010/2011 being more realistic time-frames for a full commercial LTE network launch. Is AT&T upgrading their 3G network to get ready for the 3G iPhone? Well, AT&T upgraded its EDGE network ahead of and during the iPhone’s initial launch. So, it wouldn’t be a far-stretch to think that AT&T is making sure its HSPA-ship is in shape before Apple bows the 3G iPhone sometime this year . • AT&T data network outage?

What’s this? Another outage for AT&T’s data network? We’ve been getting reports (confirmed on our end) of AT&T data blackouts in the Los Angeles area. It looks like the EDGE and UMTS/HSDPA networks are out of commission as of the time of this posting. Anyone else having troubles pulling down data from AT&T? • IntoMobile's 3G vs EDGE webpage load-time shootout - just how slow is the iPhone?

Right, we all know just how much faster 3G data speeds are in comparison to EDGE speeds. Theoretical speeds are one thing, straight-up throughput numbers are impressive, but what about the most important aspect of any device’s wireless data connection - actual web-browsing performance? Unless you’re one of the harder-core mobile warriors that uses their mobile phone as a wireless modem (tethered to a laptop), chances are your cellphone’s data connection is predominantly used to serve up webpages on your handset’s display. So, just how much faster does a 3G data connection allow you to surf the web? Or, conversely, just how much does the iPhone’s EDGE-only data connection slow down the web-surfing experience? (Hint: not that slow) Well, we set to find out exactly what kind of load-times you can expect in real-world situations and with real-world devices. For this test we used an AT&T Tilt 8925 ( HTC Kaiser TyTn II ) on AT&T’s 3G network, and squared it off against an Apple iPhone on AT&T’s EDGE network. Webpage load-times were the focus of this test, and load-times were rounded down to the nearest second. Load-times were recorded from the moment the page started to load until the status-bar indicated that the page was finished loading (until the progress indicator-bar disappeared). Hit the link for the video. Hypothesis : Webpage load-times are bottlenecked by the device’s processing power and page-rendering technology. This should result in similar load-times between the iPhone and the Tilt. Results : What we found was completely expected. There’s more at play then just throughput. The iPhone’s web-kit based Safari browser allowed it to load pages almost as fast as the AT&T Tilt. We used the Pocket Internet Explorer that comes pre-installed on the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional-based AT&T Tilt - and it proved to be the device’s downfall. Both devices had similar processor speeds, so...
  • Apple bringing 3G iPhone to US market by late May, early June 2008!

We love us some juicy 3G iPhone rumors . As with most things Apple, there’s nothing from Cupertino that would indicate that this latest report from CNBC’s Jim Goldman has any more credibility than any other “report” that cites “inside sources.” But, Goldman believes that the 3G iPhone will hit the US market in late May, early June 2008. This latest rumor is in line with AT&T CEO Stephenson’s confirmation of a 2008-release for the next-generation iPhone , as well as other rumors that the 3G iPhone has been delayed from an early 2008 (Q1) release to a mid-2008/Summer launch window . It makes sense for Apple to hold off on the next-gen 3G iPhone until at least a year after the iPhone’s initial launch in the US market. Hopefully by the time the 3G iPhone launches, AT&T’s 3G network will have the ubiquity that Europeans enjoy so much. • AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson spills confirms 3G iPhone for 'next year'

We’ve been talking about the next-generation iPhone for almost as long as the current iPhone has been on-market. The 3G version of the Apple iPhone has been rumored time and again for a launch in early 2008 . And, we’re expecting Steve Jobs to drop the 3G-bomb on us during his January Macworld keynote. But, all that talk about a 3G iPhone has been rumor and hearsay. That is, until AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson slipped up and uttered those precious few words - “You’ll have it next year.” Stephenson confirmed the existence and near-term arrival of the next-generation iPhone with 3G data speeds at a meeting at Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. As far as price is concerned, AT&T’s Chief could only say that Steve Jobs “will dictate what the price of the phone is.” And, as any good CEO should do, Randall Stephenson took the time to undermine Verizon’s recent announcement that they’ll be opening up the CDMA network to “ any app, any device ” in 2008. The AT&T CEO said that Verizon’s plans were “overblown” and that AT&T is “probably one of the most open networks in the world, not just the U.S.” Take that , Verizon. Apple’s doesn’t usually talk about future product developments or releases, and keeps those in-the-know on a tight leash. So, that begs the question - did Steve Jobs give Stephenson the go-ahead to confirm the 3G iPhone’s launch-window? Or did Randall Stephenson goof-up and let the cat out of the bag? Either way, we’re already saving up our couch-change for that 3G iPhone in 2008! • LTE gets a boost with GSMA support - 4G is now LTE

The GSM Association is set to push the next-generation Long-Term Evolution (LTE) standard into the hearts and minds of people around the world with the association’s recent vote to support the emerging 4G standard as the next step after HSPA. Following on recent successes in LTE’s field-tests and Verizon’s consideration of the technology for their next-gen mobile broadband network, the GSMA has granted the LTE standard an official position as the 4G successor to the 3G HSPA networks currently used by AT&T in the US and Rogers in Canada. This move signifies the GSM industry’s official support of the LTE standard over the UMB and WiMAX standards that are being backed by non-GSM carriers. Rob Conway, CEO of GSMA, has called upon the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to ensure that the industry will win the necessary spectrum to carry out their LTE plans. With the backing of the United Nations’ telecom regulatory body, LTE has a bright future ahead. The GSMA “will work with other companies and organizations developing LTE technology, and start working with the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) initiative.” We should start to see LTE applications pop up around the end of the decade, so we’ve still got a way to go before we see LTE mobile broadband speeds of 100Mbps hit the US. WiMAX could very well have a future in the US’s mobile broadband environment if it gets off the ground before 2009 . Like the saying goes, “first to market, first in your hearts.” Okay, we made that up, but if WiMAX does make it to market before LTE goes online, it could gather enough support to remain viable well into the future - even if it is a 3G technology . • AT&T preparing to upgrade 3G network with faster upload speeds

While iPhone owner’s are still working with the EDGE upgrades that AT&T rolled out to make EDGE-speeds more bearable (and surveys seem to indicate that iPhone owners are happy with the iPhone’s EDGE data speeds), AT&T is preparing to rollout an upgrade to its 3G network. President of AT&T network services, Richard Burns, told Reuters that the company is planning to boost upload speeds on their 3G network by six-times - taking the current 129Kbps upstream limit to 500-800Kbps. The upgrades are expected to happen in October and November, in response to increased customer demand for higher upload bandwidth. “The ability to upload is becoming more important,” Burns said. “Everybody in the street is becoming a reporter so the desire to be able to upload is growing. That’s become a much bigger part of consumer demand than it was just a few years ago.” When the iPhone launched on AT&T’s network, the carrier upgraded its EDGE infrastructure to maximize the iPhone’s appeal. Could the No. 1 US carrier be upgrading their 3G infrastructure in light of the AT&T Tilt ’s (aka HTC Kaiser/ TyTn II/P4550) impending launch ? Maybe. Maybe not. In either case, faster upload speeds are just a bonus for anyone that will be calling the AT&T Tilt their own. • First pics of AT&T Samsung 737 slider-phone

It looks like Samsung is bringing yet another 3G phone to AT&T’s stable. Phone Arena managed to get their hands on the first pics of the newest Samsung 3G slider to hit AT&T. The Samsung SGH-737 will complement AT&T’s recently released Ultra Edition SGH-717 and Ultra Edition SGH-727 clamshell and candybar phones. However, unlike the previous 3G entries, the Samsung 737 won’t be thin enough to carry the Ultra Edition moniker - but it’s still pretty slim for a slider phone. We’re expecting the 737 to be a music-oriented phone (judging by the music-shortcut-key next to the conspicuous red dial on the front face) and 3G UMTS (likely HSDPA). We’re diggin’ the red/black color combo, and the cool red accents really make this slider-phone shine. Hopefully, we’ll see the same 3 megapixel autofocus shooter that the European Samsung D900 and U600 get. We’ll bring you more details as they emerge. This thing definitely looks like a 3G-winner.
