  • Sprint outs Motorola i365 and V950 with Samsung M220, M320 -- no Touch Diamond yet

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Samsung , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Even though all signs are pointing to a release later this month, we'll admit -- we were still secretly hoping that the rumored September 2 date would somehow magically hold for Sprint's release of the Touch Diamond . Even so, the carrier is reeling in some decent -- if not totally expected -- booty today in the form of the Motorola i365 and Renegade V950 alongside Samsung's M220 and M320 flips. The i365 becomes the baddest-ass phone in Sprint's iDEN arsenal, sporting what they call a "monolith form factor" (badass speak for "candybar," we think), mil-spec everything, and GPS. As Direct Connect goes, the V950 is pretty much everything the i365 is not, eschewing iDEN for QChat and offering all the creature comforts of a modern featurephone -- music player, camera, external controls, and a pair of decent displays for starters -- and although Sprint calls this one "ultra-rugged" as well, we don't think we could heave it against a wall quite as many times as we could the i365. From Samsung, the M220 and M320 are simple 1xRTT flips with essentially the same specs as one another, though the M320 tacks on a VGA camera (so in other words, it really may as well not have a camera, either). All four handsets are available now. Read - Samsung M220, M320 Read - Motorola i365 Read - Motorola Renegade V950 Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Sprint prepping Motorola i365, Renegade, and a pair of Samsungs

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , Samsung , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Okay, Samsung, we get it: you're really good at pounding out the cheap clamshells. Point taken. Oh, what's that, you say? You still feel like you have something to prove? Oh, well then by all means, dump another couple $20 flips on Sprint! Please, we insist. As expected , it looks like we'll all have the fabulous opportunity to pick up our choice of the M220 or M320 for $19.99 come September 2, offering Bluetooth, speakerphone, and in the case of the M320, a VGA camera. Out of the Moto camp, we get the i365 ruggedized brickphone for iDEN fanboys and fangirls -- you know who you are, so stop looking around -- which will run $90 and include Bluetooth despite its early-90s appeal. Finally, the most exciting of the foursome has to be the V950 Renegade , but excitement comes at a cost: $199.99, to be exact. In this case, your pair of Benjamins is going to net you QChat capability, Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, and external music controls, which makes it just about the coolest Direct Connect phone going. Line starts over here, folks. [Thanks, anonymous tipster] Gallery: Sprint prepping Motorola i365, Renegade, and a pair of Samsungs Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Samsung Messager goes after LG Rumor crowd

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , CDMA You don't see terribly many low-cost horizontal slider dumbphones from Samsung, and that's left the market wide open for LG with its Rumor and Scoop -- until now, that is. Meet the Messager, a candybar whose sole reason for being is making your texting life a little easier thanks to a QWERTY keyboard that slides out to the side. The 1xRTT data (yipes!) and 1.3-megapixel sensor aren't going to bake any noodles, but at $199 with no contract whatsoever, there's not a lot of room for bellyaching, especially when you throw in A2DP and a microSD slot. Just a hint, though, Samsung: any phone + pretty colors = $$$. Seriously. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Motorola VE240 hitting an American carrier near you?

Filed under: Handsets , Motorola , CDMA Cellpassion has unearthed a new candybar from Motorola that it claims will find shelter on "a couple" US carriers -- and judging from the "MetroPCS" front and center on the display, we'd tend to agree. The so-called VE240 really isn't much to look at, but it obviously has a music slant and reminds us a bit of the W388 we first saw not long ago with an added bar of bright orange across the front for, oh... excitement and style, we guess? If the MetroPCS bit checks out, it'll be a CDMA handset, so put away those newfangled SIM cards, GSM fanboys and girls. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Leaked Sprint roadmap reveals slew of releases through September?

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , Motorola , Samsung , Sanyo , Sprint , Windows Mobile , EV-DO , CDMA Though the document doesn't exactly look magazine-quality, this is a case where we'd argue that it doesn't have to be to be real; it's clearly for internal use only, for one thing, and secondly, we don't know where else the picture of that new Sanyo Katana Eclipse would come from. The Eclipse is just one of several pretty nifty releases claimed to be lined up between now and September, with the Motorola VE20 Vegas and a pair of data cards joining it on August 17. September should bring the Motorola i365 and V950 Renegade , Samsung m220 and m320 , and the HTC MP6950 -- which we assume to be either the Touch Diamond or Touch Pro -- clearly in desperate need of an actual name by the time it launches. Go-go gadget, product marketing team! [Thanks, Owen] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Nokia 1508: CDMA, and that's about it

Filed under: Handsets , Nokia , CDMA "CDMA" and "Nokia" are two words that still don't feel like they belong in the same sentence, but the trickle of CDMA products keeps flowing out of Espoo, so we guess we're going to have to start readjusting our attitude at some point. The latest handset is the lowly 1508 candybar, lacking the style exhibited by the 1606 and 3606 flips but getting by with an integrated FM radio, speakerphone, and storage for 500 contacts and 400 text messages -- not a barn burner by any stretch of the imagination, but hey, it fills a niche. It'll ship in the third quarter to "select" CDMA markets. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • KDDI au announces Summer 2008 collection

Filed under: Handsets , Features , Pantech , Sanyo , Sharp , Sony Ericsson , KDDI , EV-DO , Kyocera , CDMA , Casio , Toshiba In Japan, carriers tend to release new models in giant, blockbuster batches -- seasonal "collections" that leave the rest of the world green with envy. KDDI au is no exception, having just announced its predictably spectacular Summer 2008 lineup with entrants from Kyocera, Sony Ericsson, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba, Casio, and Korea's Pantech. Here's the rundown: Hitachi Wooo W62H. KDDI is emphasizing this one's video and 3D gaming capabilities, both of which are assisted by the presence of a 2-way hinge for flipping out the screen in a landscape orientation. Comes in blue, silver, and black. Sharp W62SH. The FM transmitter's kinda cool, and the three-inch WVGA screen should be perfect for watching Spiderman 2, which comes bundled with the phone. Purple, white, and gold are the color choices. Sanyo W63SA. Global CDMA roaming and an integrated English-Japanese dictionary makes this one a solid choice for world travelers. Get this one in red, silver, or black. Toshiba Sportio. As the name implies, this one's all about burnin' those calories with an integrated calorie counter. The candybar form factor is a refreshing change of pace in the lineup, but too bad about that QVGA display! Five colors to choose from here: orange, black, white, green, and red. Casio G'zOne W62CA. Like its counterparts on Verizon, the W62CA is designed to take a beating without falling apart. It's impact resistant and waterproof, features a compass, thermometer, and GPS, and naturally, one-seg TV. Get it in green, black, or white. Sanyo W64SA. This fashionable flip has some crazy light effects to go along with its crazy selection of colors, but other than that, it seems pretty pedestrian. If you can call a 2.8-inch WVGA display "pedestrian." It's available in pink, white, yellow, and black. Sony Ericsson Full Change re. The...
  • Samsung's simple r410 QWERTY phone now available from MetroPCS

Filed under: Handsets , Samsung , CDMA We've been monitoring MetroPCS' pages for a while now waiting for this thing to become available to purchase, and finally, here it is. The r410 candybar from Samsung features a VGA camera (MetroPCS calls it "high-resolution," pshaw), Bluetooth, and a slide-out QWERTY keypad for ridiculously easy messaging with a no-nonsense design. In fact, the fanciest thing about this phone seems to be the fact that it's available in both black and red. Grab it now for $199 before rebates. • Sprint launches entry-level Sanyo S1 for the masses

Filed under: Handsets , Sanyo , Sprint , CDMA From Sprint's roadmap to the FCC to a Radio Shack shelf near you, Sprint has decided to launch the entry-level Sanyo S1 right on time. Equipped with nothing more than a dual-band CDMA radio, speaker phone, and Bluetooth 2.0, it leaves much to be desired for all but the most basic tastes. You can catch the uber-thin candybar at Radio Shack now $220 full retail, $95 on a one year, or free after a two year contract. • KDDI's Infobar 2 announced for Japan

Filed under: Handsets , KDDI , CDMA KDDI is back to show LG , Apple , and Samsung that a keypad totin' candybar can still bring the sex-ay. Meet the Infobar 2 for KDDI's CDMA-based au network, first peeped as a concept back in November as a possible followup to the wildly popular (in Japan anyway) first generation Infobar launched in 2003. Measuring 47 × 138 × 15.5-mm / 104-grams, it packs a 2.6-inch 240 x 400 pixel OLED display, stereo speakers, microSD expansion, EZ FeliCA support, 2-megapixel camera, and built-in 1Seg mobile TV tuner. It'll squeeze in about 290 minutes of talk time or 350 hours of standy when these hit Japan in November. Call us spoiled, but we still can't help but to think that it would look better without those dedicated keys . %Gallery-7810% [Via Impress ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Sanyo S1 hits the FCC

Filed under: Handsets , Sanyo , Sprint , EV-DO , CDMA Remember that Sprint roadmap we mentioned not long ago? There was talk of an SCP-4930 replacement dubbed "S1" reportedly dropping in October, and what we're seeing now in the FCC would pretty much back up that statement. Sanyo's got a confidentiality agreement in full effect here, sadly, but we can make out from the ID label documentation that we're pretty clearly dealing with a candybar of some sorts. Despite the naming convention, we've been hearing that the S1 will slot in lower than the high-end (at the time, anyway) M1 , so don't get your hopes up that Sanyo's going to blow us all away here with some 8GB music monster. Still, though, good to see that the beleaguered manufacturer is still reppin' strong on Sprint. Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
  • Virgin Mobile intros Super Slice, its first Bluetooth phone

Filed under: Handsets , UTStarcom , Virgin Mobile , 1xRTT , MVNOs , CDMA Would ya believe Virgin is just now getting down with that whole Bluetooth fad? No, seriously, it's true, and it has a name: Super Slice. As the moniker implies, the 10.2mm thick candybar is the successor to last year's Slice , a phone also sourced from UTStarcom . Features include a VGA cam, up to 270 minutes of talk time, speakerphone, a fresh user interface, and a refreshing price: $59.99 contract free (Virgin's prepaid, after all) when it rolls out to shelves in the middle of the month.
