  • Nokia, Qualcomm to kick off patent trials

Qualcomm and Nokia are set to go to battle in the US over hundreds of millions of dollars in potential royalty fees. This Wednesday, Qualcomm will argue in a Delaware court that Nokia owes them royalties on CDMA technology patents, with Nokia will defend their position that they've doled out over $1 billion in payments [...]
  • MetroPCS intros MetroFlash service to port Verizon and Sprint handsets

There's nothing like a little friendly carrier-rivalry to give entrenched incumbents a good jolt. Competition ends up benefiting the consumer, after all. So, what better way to eat in to CDMA competitors' giant wireless subscriber-base than to offer their customers a way to bring their CDMA Sprint or Verizon handsets to MetroPCS's network? MetroPCS has introduced [...]
  • Sprint keeps riding the data-wave with CDMA/EVDO variant of HTC Shift

Sprint is really looking to expand its data-side services, and it makes sense, given their struggles in the traditional voice-call market. Sprint is apparently going to pickup the CDMA/EVDO version of the HTC Shift. We knew that the HTC Shift was a-comin' in GSMCDMA flavors (thanks, FCC) , and it seems that Sprint will have [...]
  • Sierra Wireless unveils Sierra Wireless Compass 597 USB EVDO Rev. A modem

Don't let popular opinion fool you. Sometimes size does matter - in this case, smaller is better. When you've got a USB dongle hanging out of your USB port, ready to break-off and kill that precious data port with one wrong slip of your laptop, you want to make sure that said USB dongle is [...]
  • Sprint CEO Dan Hesse hints at Clearwire partnership, dual-mode WiMAX / CDMA handset this year

We've said it before and we'll say it again. Sprint had better get their WiMAX/XOHM network lit-up right-quick, before they exhaust their financial means to do so. There's a lot riding on XOHM, and a couple wrong moves could spell the end for Sprint. So, it's refreshing to hear that Sprint CEO Dan Hesse say that [...]
  • Sprint's Samsung Ace gets reviewed

Sprint just announced their Samsung ACE as another world-traveling handset to add to their global-phone lineup. Engadget Mobile has had some time to play with the Sprint Samsung ACE and came away satisfied. The Samsung ACE isn't a whole new take on the QWERTY-keyboard toting Windows Mobile 6.0 Standard idea, but is rather a Sprint-branded [...]
  • FCC shows Samsung Z400 - Samsung's first Direct-Connect handset for Sprint

The FCC is always good for getting the down-low on un-announced, un-released handsets. It looks like Samsung is getting into the DirectConnect game. How Sprint managed to convince Samsung to hop on-board its struggling CDMA-based DirectConnect bandwagon is beyond us - although, it’s a better wagon to hop aboard than Nextel’s dying iDEN network. The Samsung Z400 will be rebranding Qualcomm’s QChat PTT technology for use as Sprint’s DirectConnect. We’re not used to seeing a DirectConnect handset on Sprint Nextel that didn’t bear a Motorola logo, but hey, times are a-changin’. The FCC has just dropped the ball on Samsung’s Z400, the company’s first DirectConnect handset destined for Sprint. With a rugged casing, OLED external display, dual-antenna setup, stereo speakers, Bluetooth, EVDO and camera, the Samsung Z400 looks to be headed to Sprint’s mid-range lineup - destined to pull duty as a blue-collar fleet-phone. Oh, and a quick peak at the user’s manual reveals a “Chat and Dating” service - interesting indeed. Pricing and availability are not yet known. • HTC Touch headed to Alltel

Fancy an iPhone but hate the prospect of giving in to that cult-of-Apple or jumping network-ship for AT&T? Well, if you’re a Sprint or Telus customer, then you likely already enjoying the CDMA alternative to the iPhone, the HTC Touch. Unfortunately, if you are on Alltel’s network, you’ll just have to find another way to quench your sleek, touchscreen thirst. That is, until the HTC Touch is offered on your particular flavor of CDMA. Well, you may not have to wait much longer. It looks like Alltel is set to pick up the HTC Touch – and it should hit your network in about a week. But, playing on the sharper edge of mobile technology doesn’t come cheap – expect to shell out a penny shy of $200 with 2-year contract and applicable rebates, or about $500 outright (sans contract). • MetroPCS planning 3G service in seven markets

Following on MetroPCS’s successful launch in the c oveted Los Angeles market , the “unlimited” carrier has announced that they’ll be working with Alcatel-Lucent to bring 3G data service to seven key markets in the US. MetroPCS won the 3G spectrum in last year’s AWS spectrum auction, and will be upgrading their CDMA network from 1xRTT to EV-DO speeds in Los Angeles, Detroit, and Dallas. MetroPCS also plans to launch in four new markets with 3G from the get-go - New York, Las Vegas, Bostson, and Philadelphia will see MetroPCS’s 3G EVDO network go live in the near future. “Our customers want the most value for their dollar and our unlimited flat-rate service offers a compelling value proposition, which is evident by the remarkable continued growth of our subscriber base,” said Roger D. Linquist, MetroPCS’ Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. The upgraded 3G MetroPCS network will bring advanced data solutions to its subscriber-base. MetroPCS customers can expect the same “unlimited” rate plan model with even more service options - services like “advanced multimedia, mobile data, unified communications, video mail, speech-enabled and real-time voice portal applications.” MetroPCS did not outline their 3G-rollout timeline, but we assume it’ll be completed before the end of 2008. Unlimited wireless plans just got a bit more interesting. We’d love to see a 3G GSM network with an unlimited rate-plan model - now that would get us to bite. Samsung’s going after the Asian cash-cow that is the Indian wireless market by releasing the CDMA Samsung Max as an open-market mobile phone offering. Hyundai Kim, Vice President and Head of the CDMA Division at Samsung Telecommunications India Pvt. Ltd., said, “We expect to fuel the growth of the Indian CDMA industry through the launch Samsung Max in the open market. • Motorola RIZR Z6c clears FCC, headed towards Verizon

Talk about a truly global-capable phone. The Motorola RIZR Z6c has just gotten the green-light from the FCC , and should be bringing all that GSM and CDMA goodness to Verizon’s network sometime soon. GSM and CDMA on Verizon’s network? Did Verizon launch some sort of undercover GSM network while we weren’t looking? Not a chance. Verizon’s more than happy with their CDMA stance in the US wireless landscape, but with most of the world using GSM technology, it makes sense for Verizon to bring a world phone on board with the ability to surf those GSM airwaves abroad. The Motorola RIZR Z6c slider (as the name would suggest) will be rocking the same 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, microSD card slot, and QVGA display from its MediaFLO and VCAST TV sporting sibling - the Motorola RIZR Z6tv . Verizon will be adding the Moto RIZR Z6c to its “World Edition” stable (alongside the recently released BlackBerry 8830 ) - the dual-band CDMA radio with EVDO and dual-band 900/1800 MHz GSM radio ensures that the Motorola RIZR Z6c “World Edition” will be comfortable in pretty much any country on this planet. We’re not sure when this thing’s going to go live on Verizon’s network. But, with the holiday season rapidly coming to a close, this FCC approval might expedite the Motorola RIZR Z6c’s launch. With that cool-looking, embossed rear (it’s all about the little details), we can’t wait to get our hands on this thing. • Alltel picks up the BlackBerry 8130 Pearl with GPS

It looks like Alltel’s keeping up with its larger wireless rivals. The recently launched CDMA BlackBerry 8130 Pearl with that glorious integrated GPS receiver will be making its way to Alltel’s network sporting an “amethyst” color scheme. Expect the Alltel BlackBerry 8130 Pearl to pack in all the same hardware as its Sprint and Verizon kin - which is to say that it’ll rock GPS, EVDO, 2 megapixel camera, microSDHC card slot, and that SureType keyboard. Alltel says they’ll be launching their BlackBerry 8130 Pearl in time for the holiday shopping season (which is quite literally upon us), so look for this new Pearl to drop fairly soon. Oh, and it’ll cost you $150 after a $100 rebate (2-year contract required, of course).
