  • T-Mobile G1 coming to Walmart for $148.88

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Android Well, now isn't this something? Best Buy has its fancy little iPhone 3G , but it'll be Wally World offering up the G1 outside of official T-Mobile outlets. As we'd heard yesterday , 550 Walmart stores across the country will begin selling the Android-powered handset beginning tomorrow, and folks who opt to pick one up here versus a traditional T-Mob store will save $31.11. Yep -- according to company spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien, the new / upgrade-eligible customer price for a Walmart-sourced G1 will be just $148.88 with a 2-year agreement. Wait, what? You already purchased your G1 at the full price ? They always said the early bird pays the premium... or something along those lines. • T-Mobile G1 now available

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Android Now that T-Mobile's systematic discrimination against non-T-Mobile customers (how dare they?) has come to an end, we can all exhale, pull out our credit cards and get to maxin' out the plastic. That's right -- the Android -powered G1 is now available for sale from T-Mob's website to all comers, though we're only seeing the black and bronze models listed at the moment and both are tagged with an ominous "extremely limited availability" label which tells us they probably won't be there long. $179.99's the price on two-year contract, and if they do sell out online, don't sweat it just yet -- sweep your local stores today. • Google opens the floodgates, open-sources Android

Filed under: Software , Android Making good on a promise it made at the very beginning , Google has today announced that the source code underpinning its Android platform for mobile devices is available for free to anyone who wants a crack at it. The code is being provided through the newly-announced Android Open Source Project, which will give the public at large the opportunity to make contributions to the platform's all-important core -- a first for a mobile operating system with true mass-market appeal. Theoretically, the move should position Android to benefit from a fairly democratic, speedy evolution, and it'll also give anyone with a few spare chips lying around the chance to build a smartphone of their own without shelling out a dime in licensing fees. We're really looking forward to seeing Android pop up on a whole bunch of devices for which it was never intended -- but we have to admit, in a sick, totally twisted sort of way, we're looking forward to some truly deranged individual porting Windows Mobile to the G1 , too. • T-Mobile G1 pre-orders sell out (update: not quite yet)

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , Android If you're a T-Mobile customer who's been dozing off for the past few days, you've already missed your chance to pre-order yourself a G1 . With any luck, that won't be a problem and you'll just be able to march into a store on or around October 22 and pick one up the old-fashioned way, but the window of opportunity for an utterly stress-free Android buying experience is closed. We don't have hard numbers on just how many units were being offered through the pre-order program, but 60,000 is getting tossed around as a rumor, which would work out to about 10 percent of the total outlay HTC is said to be aiming for by year's end . Of course, if you're not a T-Mobile customer, this is all business as usual and you're just chuckling under your breath that everyone's stuck in the same boat now, aren't you, you sick puppy? [Via TmoNews ] Update: Well, that was quick -- the "Log in to order" button is working once again. Any bets on how long until they're out a second time? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • T-Mobile kills the 1GB data cap, takes a more friendly approach

Filed under: HTC , T-Mobile , Misc , Android digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/T_Mobile_kills_the_1GB_data_cap_takes_more_friendly_aproach'; It looks like T-Mobile is listening folks -- and they appear to be responding. In a statement we've just received from the company, they tell us that they're killing the hard-line approach to data capping, saying instead they'll reserve the right to cap a "small fraction" of users who abuse the network. In their words: "Our goal, when the T-Mobile G1 becomes available in October, is to provide affordable, high-speed data service allowing customers to experience the full data capabilities of the device and our 3G network. At the same time, we have a responsibility to provide the best network experience for all of our customers so we reserve the right to temporarily reduce data throughput for a small fraction of our customers who have excessive or disproportionate usage that interferes with our network performance or our ability to provide quality service to all of our customers. We removed the 1GB soft limit from our policy statement, and we are confident that T-Mobile G1 customers will enjoy the high speed of data access over our 3G network. The specific terms for our new data plans are still being reviewed and once they are final we will be certain to share this broadly with current customers and potential new customers." • T-Mobile G1 has push Gmail

Filed under: Messaging , Software , HTC , T-Mobile , Android Sure, there's a lot of to love about the open-source, Android-powered T-Mobile G1, but Google's Andy Rubin just confirmed what might be the new handset's killer app: push Gmail. While that's not a first, it could be a major differentiating feature for Android phones here on out, since it sounds like the app is advanced and partially web-based: it has the threading, search, and Google Talk presence features of the web client. We'll let you know more as soon as we find out. Permalink | Email this | Comments

  • Amazon: 6 million DRM-free songs on T-Mobile G1

Filed under: Multimedia var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Official_Amazon_MP3_comes_on_G1_Android_phone'; It's true , Amazon just announced that its MP3 music store will be pre-loaded as an application on the T-Mobile G1 . Users will be able to search, download, buy and play music from Amazon MP3 -- that's a selection of 6 million DRM-free MP3 songs from all four major labels and many independents. The pre-loaded Amazon MP3 application provides G1 owners with a phone-optimised view of the Amazon MP3 store -- WiFi is required to download music, but searching, browsing, and listening to samples can be done over 3G the T-Mobile network. Tracks cost around $0.89 with most albums priced between $5.99 and $9.99. How you like them Apples, Apple. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Meet the T-Mobile G1

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , UMTS , Android digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Meet_the_T_Mobile_G1_Engadget'; Uh, c'mon guys -- this is a little ridiculous. Now typically, you want to keep this sort of thing under wraps until the day of your event, but it seems like the cats and kittens at T-Mobile can't contain themselves. Yes, you're looking at the first official product shot of the G1 Android phone ever. Enjoy it. Update: TmoNews has just uncovered new specs and info on the phone. Here's what they've got so far: the phone is 4.6 x 2.16 x 0.63 inches, weighs 5.6 ounces, features a 480 x 320 HVGA display, sports 3G (obviously), GPS, has a 3.1-megapixel camera, supports up to 8GB of memory (though no format is mentioned), and will feature 5 hours of talktime with 130 hours of standby. Strangely, the phone won't do video capture (what?), won't have stereo Bluetooth, will require a Gmail account, and won't be sold at stores outside of a 2-5 mile radius of T-Mobile's 3G coverage area. That last bit sounds a little odd to us, but we're guessing a lot of the functionality of this device will be shot in non-3G areas. [Thanks, Luis ; Via TmoNews ] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • T-Mobile goes live with G1 website

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Android It's one thing to appear on a website before being officially outed. It's another to have a web portal designed specifically for a handset. On the eve of its official debut in the Big Apple, T-Mobile has launched the definitive G1 website, complete with a G1 logo, the time and date of tomorrow's press event, a few tabs sure to be chock full of juicy details just as soon as said event closes, and most importantly, a pre-order button (of sorts) in order to sign up for what we can only fathom to be a notification of availability. 10:30AM tomorrow morning -- we'll be there , you'll be there. • G1 appears on T-Mobile's site

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile Snap -- looks like the Android-powered T-Mobile G1 is peeking out a little early in the form of a non-working pre-registration link on the my.t-mobile.com customer portal. No specs or info, but if you had any doubt this thing was coming on Tuesday we'd say it just got cleared up. Get ready for the Googlephone, kids. • Android-powered HTC Dream to sell for $199 on T-Mobile

Filed under: Handsets , HTC , T-Mobile , GSM , EDGE , HSDPA , Android With under a week to go before the HTC Dream is officially unveiled in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal has given us something juicy to gnaw on for the time being: a price. Unsurprisingly positioned to compete directly with the iPhone 3G , the Android-powered HTC Dream / G1 will go for a cool $199 (with 2-year contract, obviously) when it launches on T-Mobile, though there's no word yet on what it'll run sans subsidization. So, how do you like dem Apples? [Via Fortune ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
