  • Facebook Grows Mobile Team And Reports 15 Million Active Mobile Users

Facebook said on its blog today that it's beefing up its mobile team and making improvements to take advantage of a growing number of people who are using the social network while on the go. Since the beginning of the year, the number of active mobile users has jumped from 5 million to 15 million. One of the most recent features added to the mobile Facebook site is the ability to comment on your friends' status updates. "We didn't expect that we would receive nearly a million status comments in the first 24 hours," a mobile developer at Facebook wrote. "This may not seem like much, but it was actually part of a really important change. As people on Facebook share more and more information each day, status updates have become one of the most popular ways for people to connect quickly and easily on the site." The company said users can either access the mobile site by going to m.facebook.com, or if the users have a smartphone, they can go to an "extended site" at x.facebook.com, or they can download an application for some phones. Facebook also allows you to receive notifications or update your status via text messages. • Loopt Taps Qualcomm For Location Information; Report Says GPS On Phones Soars

When tapping into the GPS coordinates of a mobile phone, it can be costly, especially when a company is charged each time someone looks up their location. To combat that, the mobile-social network provider Loopt said it is partnering with a Qualcomm ( NSDQ: QCOM ) subsidiary, which provides GPS data for a monthly fee. The deal between Loopt and SnapTrack, will let Loopt to get social mapping and other location services without the heavy fees, GigaOm reported . This is obviously a critical step if location-based services are truly going to take off on the mobile phone industry. If it's too costly to provide location information, GPS will be limited to certain applications, rather than becoming a pervasive technology that can run in the background to deliver ads, find friends, or conduct local searches. Release . Smartphones are already getting into position to take over the location-based market from portable navigation devices (PND). In a report released today , Canalys VP Chris Jones said: "With GPS being built into the majority of smart phones, and users increasingly being given maps on their phone by default, and multiple reasons to use them, the threat to PND vendors is rising quickly." Canalys navigation is still seeing strong growth, especially in the North Amercia, where shipments grew nearly 50 percent. However, shipments fell 6 percent in Europe, where Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) is the third-largest navigation provider, trailing behind Garmin and TomTom. • 5.2B Mobile Subscribers By 2011, 1.7B On Mobile Web And 2.1B Mobile Purchases By 2013: Reports

A trio of new research reports detail the dramatic and swift rise of mobile in terms of subscription growth, mobile web usage and mobile payments for goods downloaded to mobile phones. On Pace For 5.2 Billion Mobile Subscribers By 2011 Last year there were three times as many people using mobile phones than land lines worldwide (3.3 billion and 1.1 billion respectively), according to Infonetics Research. Mobile subscriptions jumped 31 percent year-over-year while land line subscriptions declined 5 percent in the same period. Latin America and the Caribbean are the only regions where land lines are expected to grow. Strong growth, no surprise, is expected to be primarily driven by voice services in Brazil, Russia, India and China – countries where double-digit GSM subscriber growth rates are common, the firm concluded. Based on the current rate of growth, it predicts there will be 5.2 billion mobile subscribers by 2011, at which time there will also be one wireless broadband subscriber for every four wireline broadband subscribers. ( Release ). 1.7 Mobile Web Users By 2013 The number of subscribers using the internet on their mobile phones is expect to nearly triple from 577 million today to more than 1.7 billion by 2013, according to a new report from Juniper Research. Social networking, user-generated content, instant messaging, location-based services and search and discovery are all driving a more open environment where users can share, collaborate and exploit content free from carrier restrictions, the firm wrote. Asia is expected to be the largest market for mobile web where almost 416 million users are anticipated to be surfing the internet on mobile phones in five years. Currently, 190 million users are accessing the mobile web there in those regions. Juniper Research predicts South America holds the "greatest untapped potential for mobile web" because of relatively low wireline broadband penetration in those countries. • VCs Say The Focus Is On Mobile And Online Content For Next Two Years: Report

Venture capitalists, executives and investment bankers said over the next two years they expect to increase their investments in entertainment content with a focus on mobile and online applications with more mergers and acquisitions expected this year. The survey polled 300 people and was conducted by KPMG , an audit, tax and advisory firm. The survey doesn't mention this, but this seems like a logical conclusion that investments will increase with the creation of such specific funds, such as the $100 million iFund, and the $150 million Blackberry/mobile application fund. Here's a summary of some of the stats the survey found: -- On investment and M&A increases: 52 of the respondents said investments in digital content creation will increase over the next two years and 25 percent indicated that the increase will be more than 20 percent. On M&A, 59 percent said they expect M&A to increase with 18 percent saying they expect it to jump by more than 20 percent. -- On the hot sub-sectors: 31 percent said mobile applications will be hot. -- On which mobile applications will make revenue in 2009: social networks (31 percent); gaming (20 percent), video (14 percent), music downloads (20 percent) and user-generated applications (10 percent). -- On mobile video: 90 percent of VC respondents said mass adoption of mobile video will take off in the five years, and 60 percent expect it will happen within the next three years. -- Who will take the lead in leveraging social media?: 44 percent said the social media sites; 22 percent said content owners; 20 percent said brand advertisers and 14 percent said wireless operators. • Demand For Mobile Social Networks Will Grow; Revenues Will Be More Difficult: Report

Mobile social networks will experience a steady growth curve, but making money on them will remain difficult, according to a report published by In-Stat . It estimates that by 2012, there will be about 30 million "millennials," or gen-yers in the U.S. using a mobile social network. Internationally, that number will soar from 525 million this year to 975 million in 2012, reports ComputerWorld . But the big problem is not in adoption, but in finding a way to make money. In-Stat concluded that the three primary ways to generate revenue on mobile social networks is advertising, subscription services and premium upgrades. Still, with those options available, In-Stat estimates that advertising revenue in the U.S. will only total $1.5 billion this year, increasing by less than 50 percent to $2.2 billion in 2012.

  • Mobile Entertainment Forum Launches Initiative To Spur Mobile Social Networking

Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF), the London-based trade association, is launching a new initiative today that will explore mobile social networking in the U.S., France, India, Italy and the U.K. to determine ways to generate revenues, discover new business models and establish a way to protect consumer protection. The organization said 60 percent of its members identified social networking as a top priority, and a 2006 survey with Informa, forecasted that mobile communities and user-generated content would be worth $13.2 billion by 2011 worldwide. In this initiative, MEF said it will develop best practices for different geographies to ensure members meet local regulatory standards. In each country, three members will study social networking and generate a plan, schedule and communications outreach. To date, most social networks have started off online and moved to mobile. It will be interesting to see if the MEF can clearly outline the unique opportunity in mobile. Release.

  • Mobile Web 2.0 Revenues To Reach $22.4 Billion By 2013: Report

The global market for Mobile Web 2.0 (social networking, user-generated content, mobile search and mobile instant messaging) will be increase from $5.5 billion currently to $22.4 billion in 2013, according to Juniper Research (the $5.5 billion seems a little high to me, I've asked for some more details). This will come mainly from social networking/user-generated content, which is predicted to grow from $1.8 billion this year to $11.2 billion in 2013, while growth in mobile search and mobile IM will be more measured. Most of the money will come from service revenue, although mobile advertising will be significant. While the Far East, Western Europe and North America currently dominate the global market for these services, Juniper predicts they will be surpassed by developing regions over the forecast period. "Combining the power of the social network map – namely: 'who I know, how I know and where I know' – with that of mobility, presents the greatest opportunity for revenue generation of any of the applications as defined within Juniper's Mobile Web 2.0 framework," according to Juniper analyst Ian Chard. • Quarter Of UK Social Net Users Go Mobile: Research

Just 1.7 percent of all UK mobile subscribers (812,000) used a mobile social network in Q108, according to new Nielsen research. Even so, the research firm said the space could be "could be the next big thing". It said 44 percent of mobile phone users belonged to web-based social networks, and a quarter of them used such sites whilst mobile. So whilst the takeup from the overall pool of mobile users is low, it was never a given that all mobile users would take to the social nets. Convincing a quarter of all mobile-owning social net users to try out the services whilst wireless is not bad going at this early stage. Identifying the leading sites is pretty easy - they're exactly the same as in the desktop web world, with Facebook's m.facebook.com getting over 557,000 hits (nine percent of all UK mobile web users) in the quarter. But travel net Where Are You Now? fares much better on mobile (seventh against 21st on desktop). • Over 2 Trillion SMS In 2008; Social, Search And Ads Needed For Further Growth: Report

2.3 trillion SMS will be sent in major markets worldwide in 2008, Gartner predicts. That's up nearly 20 percent from 2007, while messaging revenues will grow about 16 percent to $60.2 billion. North America will see significant growth, with Gartner saying more than 300 billion messages will be sent in 2008, up from a predicted 189 billion this year. In Western Europe, though, growth is slowing, and the firm says that person-to-person SMS revenues there may peak in 2007, thanks to price cuts and message bundles. To combat this slowing growth in P2P messaging, Gartner says operators should look to social-networking services to drive traffic , as well as mobile search and advertising.
