  • Blackberry Bold to Sell on Rogers for $299?

We just heard a tip from BlackberryCool that one source confirmed the price of the Bold, expected to launch July 25, will be sold initially for $299, the same price as a 16 GB iPhone 3G. It is quite possible, however, that prices could drop by Christmas down to a low $199. That kind of price [...]
  • Rogers extends $30 data plan to full 3G smartphone range

Filed under: Rogers Wireless Rogers' new $30, 6GB data plan -- unveiled at the collective relief of virtually every would-be Canadian iPhone 3G owner -- is going to end up seeing duty outside the Apple realm. Canada's largest GSM carrier (and only GSM carrier of consequence, really) has mercifully decided to let all devices in its 3G smartphone range in on the $30 party, a range that includes winners like the Nokia N95 , HTC TyTN , and Samsung Jack , among others. Good call, Rogers -- now let's just remove that limited-time offer label and make this a permanent part of your plan menu, shall we? [Via MobileSyrup ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Apple: More than 10M apps downloaded from App Store over weekend

Apple announced yesterday that users of Apple's iPhone and the iPod Touch downloaded more than 10 million applications from the company's new App Store over the weekend. The company already announced that it sold 1 million 3G iPhones over the weekend, which InformationWeek reckons would mean that individual customers likely downloaded multiple applications from the App Store. When Apple launched the iPhone 3G, it at the same time made the phone's operating system available on the 2G iPhones and the Touch as an upgrade, giving both devices the same functionality as the iPhone 3G, which includes access to the App Store. Apple launched the App Store with more than 500 applications built by third-party developers. By Monday, that number had grown to more than 800, with more than 200 available at no charge and 90 percent of the paid software costing less than $10. • iPhone 3G aftermath: Apple sells 1 million devices in 3 days

Glitches with Apple's iTunes activation server may have caused delays but it didn't stop Apple from selling 1 million 3G iPhones in its first three days of availability. This compares to the launch of the original iPhone, which took 74 days to sell 1 million devices. Of course, one major difference between the first-generation iPhone and the iPhone 3G is that the iPhone 3G was available in 21 countries on July 11. As FierceWireless reported on Friday, the Apple iTunes server apparently couldn't handle the demand from new users signing up for service and shut down. As a result, AT&T stores were telling iPhone buyers to go home and sync with iTunes later in the day. The activation process for the iPhone 3G was a stark contrast from the first generation iPhone which used Synchronoss Technologies to activate the devices. Apple and AT&T decided to bring this function in-house, cutting Synchronoss out of the process for the iPhone 3G. • Femtocell roll out in 2009?

  • iTunes glitch mars 3G iPhone launch

Problems with Apple's iTunes activation server has wreaked havoc on the first day of Apple's much-anticipated iPhone 3G debut. The Apple iTunes server apparently couldn't handle the demand from new users signing up for service and shut down. As a result, AT&T stores are telling iPhone buyers to go home and sync with iTunes later in the day. Customers who buy an iPhone still need to sign up for a plan at an AT&T store. But to actually use the device, it has to be activated through iTunes. As of mid-afternoon Friday, new iPhone buyers were still reporting problems connecting to iTunes for activation. • How I became the man with two 3G iPhones

Here’s a story to make you laugh / weep (delete as appropriate). On Monday, I spent the morning trying and failing to place an upgrade order for a 16GB iPhone on O2’s website. It crashed, hung, and at one point took me through to a ‘thanks for you order’ page, but with no email [...]
  • AT&T "doubling" 3G network in anticipation of iPhone 3G data demands

If there's one thing that AT&T learned from last year's EDGE network-overload, it's that mobs and hoards of over-eager iPhone owners are apt to overload the No. 1 US wireless carrier's data network. So, on the eve of the US iPhone 3G launch, AT&T has announced that it is "doubling" the capacity of their 3G [...]
  • Carphone Warehouse and the iPhone 3G

While we’ve heard multiple horror stories of O2 cocking up web pre-orders, I’ve not heard a peep from anyone ordering their iPhone 3G from Carphone Warehouse’s website. In fact, it claims that both the 8 and 16GB models are still in stock for new contracts (pop back on the 11th for upgrades, apparently). While we’re on [...]
