Love AT&T’s 3G network performance? Hate AT&T’s 3G network reliability and coverage? Right, us too. But, fear not, AT&T-fan. The No. 1 national wireless carrier has announced that they’ve got some massive 3G upgrades planned for 2008 - again . As expected, AT&T will be turning up the dial on their HSPA network and offering coverage in 80 new cities - bringing the grand total of HSPA-covered areas to 350. The announcement times perfectly with the FCC’s approval of the AT&T acquisition of Aloha’s 12Mhz slice of the 700Mhz spectrum. AT&T has ear-marked this extra bandwidth for “broadcast video or for two-way communications such as voice, data or multicast content,” and expanding their 3G HSPA network falls directly in the “data” category. The network upgrade will bring 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps downlink speeds and 500Kbps to 800Kbps uplink speeds to even more parts of the country. And, after most of AT&T’s network gets the HSPA-treatment, the AT&T 3G network will be ready for inevitable HSPA+ upgrades. Of course, all these upgrades are just milestones on the path towards AT&T’s eventual 4G LTE network rollout in 2009 at the earliest, with 2010/2011 being more realistic time-frames for a full commercial LTE network launch. Is AT&T upgrading their 3G network to get ready for the 3G iPhone? Well, AT&T upgraded its EDGE network ahead of and during the iPhone’s initial launch. So, it wouldn’t be a far-stretch to think that AT&T is making sure its HSPA-ship is in shape before Apple bows the 3G iPhone sometime this year . We’ve been talking about the next-generation iPhone for almost as long as the current iPhone has been on-market. The 3G version of the Apple iPhone has been rumored time and again for a launch in early 2008 . And, we’re expecting Steve Jobs to drop the 3G-bomb on us during his January Macworld keynote. But, all that talk about a 3G iPhone has been rumor and hearsay. That is, until AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson slipped up and uttered those precious few words - “You’ll have it next year.” Stephenson confirmed the existence and near-term arrival of the next-generation iPhone with 3G data speeds at a meeting at Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. As far as price is concerned, AT&T’s Chief could only say that Steve Jobs “will dictate what the price of the phone is.” And, as any good CEO should do, Randall Stephenson took the time to undermine Verizon’s recent announcement that they’ll be opening up the CDMA network to “ any app, any device ” in 2008. The AT&T CEO said that Verizon’s plans were “overblown” and that AT&T is “probably one of the most open networks in the world, not just the U.S.” Take that , Verizon. Apple’s doesn’t usually talk about future product developments or releases, and keeps those in-the-know on a tight leash. So, that begs the question - did Steve Jobs give Stephenson the go-ahead to confirm the 3G iPhone’s launch-window? Or did Randall Stephenson goof-up and let the cat out of the bag? While iPhone owner’s are still working with the EDGE upgrades that AT&T rolled out to make EDGE-speeds more bearable (and surveys seem to indicate that iPhone owners are happy with the iPhone’s EDGE data speeds), AT&T is preparing to rollout an upgrade to its 3G network. President of AT&T network services, Richard Burns, told Reuters that the company is planning to boost upload speeds on their 3G network by six-times - taking the current 129Kbps upstream limit to 500-800Kbps. The upgrades are expected to happen in October and November, in response to increased customer demand for higher upload bandwidth. “The ability to upload is becoming more important,” Burns said. “Everybody in the street is becoming a reporter so the desire to be able to upload is growing. That’s become a much bigger part of consumer demand than it was just a few years ago.” When the iPhone launched on AT&T’s network, the carrier upgraded its EDGE infrastructure to maximize the iPhone’s appeal. Could the No. 1 US carrier be upgrading their 3G infrastructure in light of the AT&T Tilt ’s (aka HTC Kaiser/ TyTn II/P4550) impending launch ? Maybe. Maybe not. In either case, faster upload speeds are just a bonus for anyone that will be calling the AT&T Tilt their own.
