  • Interview: MocoSpace CEO Justin Siegel: "We'll Generate Millions Of Dollars In Ad Revenue This Year"

In 2013, more than 140 million subscribers will be part of a mobile social network, and that they will generate $410 million from subscriptions alone, which doesn't include revenues from mobile advertising, according to a report recently released by ABI Research . To get a sense of where things stand today in mobile social networks, I caught up with Justin Siegel, CEO and co-founder of MocoSpace , a free mobile social network. (The "moco" stands "mobile community," not "mobile content," as it does in our name). Siegel said since launching MocoSpace in the fall of 2005, the site has been on an upward trajectory, and now has 3.5 million registered users and receives more than 2 billion page views a month, mostly from the U.S. and some from Canada. To be sure, the company attracts the curious, looking for photos and profiles of strangers and friends while on the go. "If you work in retail or construction, and occupations like that, you do not work in front of a PC. A mobile social network will be much more integral to your needs," said Siegel, who points out that Facebook and MySpace make you register online first before you can view profile information on the phone. "It's not about starting over [with a new social network]. It's about starting." Headquartered in Boston, with development offices in Israel, MocoSpace has 25 employees and has raised $7 million in two rounds of venture capital. Here's highlights from my conversation with Siegel, who covered everything from the company's roots to the mobile advertising market: -- History: Siegel started the company with Jamie Halls, who he has been friends since childhood. Together they previously founded JSmart, a mobile game company that was bought by the SK Group for an undisclosed amount in 2004. The two worked at the company through Skyzone, the U.S. group, before leaving to start MocoSpace. -- The opportunity: Siegel said they started the company because...

  • Citi Tech Conference: Google's Armstrong On Mobile Ad Revenue: Keep Waiting

Citibank analysts don't think mobile will be a material source of ad revenue in the U.S. this year, but perhaps it will in Asia. Tim Armstrong, Google's ( NSDQ: GOOG ) president, Advertising & Commerce, North America, appearing at the Citi Investment Research Technology Conference in New York, when asked how Google regards the potential of mobile advertising to grow significantly this year sounded a cautious note and declined to offer any stronger predictions along the lines of "wait until next year—maybe." Among the issues he identified as holding Google and marketers back from greater mobile ad activity was scalability. He also wondered whether the iPhone will grow more quickly and if that will translate to more mobile ads sooner rather than later. Armstrong: "I think the non-iPhone analog devices will see search grow. Typically, we don't scale all of our resources until we see movement on the consumer side. We've been selling ads on mobile for the last 18 months. You should expect to see more over time. But it took a number of years for search to get going, and it will be the same for mobile to pick up as well, from an ad revenue perspective." Armstrong didn't have mucb to say about Android or the possible mobile version of Google's new browser, Chrome, but he did discuss the state of the search ad business and the quality (or lack thereof) of YouTube videos. More from Armstrong's Q&A at the conference is here on our sister site, paidContent.org. • Wireless Carriers Are Increasingly Interested In An App Store-Like Business, GetJar Says

GetJar , which distributes free mobile applications to consumers on the Internet and over the phone, said it is branching out its business by building application storefronts for wireless carriers. A few months ago, that would have been unheard of because carriers typically want to own the relationship with their subscribers. But with the success of Apple's ( NSDQ: AAPL ) App store, which Steve Jobs said made $30 million in its first four weeks, copycats are really starting to take off. For example, earlier this month, I reported that T-Mobile will create an open storefront this Fall that would allow developers to sell their applications freely to their subscribers, and yesterday Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ) announced the Android Market, a store for Android phones when they become available later this year. Of course, there's other app stores too, including Handango, which sells apps to smartphone users. When I met up with Bill Scott, GetJar Network's VP of sales and business development in Seattle this week, he said GetJar is seeing the same trend and is starting to work with carriers to distribute free apps on their decks. The numbers are convincing. So far, GetJar claims that consumers have downloaded 300 million applications in total from its site, with a monthly average of about 13 million downloads worldwide and more than 500,000 in the U.S. It distributes everything from Google Maps and Yahoo's ( NSDQ: YHOO ) Go to nifty, but also less useful items, such as Disco Light, which makes your phone flash, and Battery Drainer, which makes your phone flash and beep until it's dead. Adult entertainment is also fair game. The company initially had no intentions of being an app store, but Founder Ilja Laurs of Lithuania stumbled into it. As a game developer, he always had a hard time getting his games tested. One day he posted it on a Web site, asking people to download it for free and report any bugs (That also explains the company's name...Jar is the suffix...

  • Industry Moves: Two Senior Execs Depart From Yahoo's Mobile Ranks

Yahoo's ( NSDQ: YHOO ) losing two more of its senior executives, this time from its mobile division, which falls under the heading of Yahoo's Connected Life. Steve Boom , SVP of Connected Life, who reported to EVP Marco Boerries, and Gary Roshak , VP of mobile advertisers and publishers, are both leaving the company to pursue other opportunities, a Yahoo spokesman confirmed. Boom will leave at the end of the month, following CTIA. Roshak left Aug. 1. Roshak was immediately replaced by David Katz , formerly Yahoo's VP of corporate strategy. When contacted, Roshak confirmed his departure, but declined to say what he was doing next. Meanwhile, no replacement has been named for Boom, who's been at the company for a decade. "He's been with the company for 10 years and wanted to look at new opportunities," a spokesman said. "We are continuing to push forward and have strong momentum. Steve believed he could leave us in the capable hands at the company." Boom's departure was first reported by TechCrunch . In June, Yahoo announced a broad reorganization , but said that Yahoo's Connected Life division would stay untouched, so likely these departures are outside of any internal decisions. Besides, Yahoo's mobile division has been continuing to make strides in both mobile search and advertising. In an interview earlier this year at the company's headquarters, Boom walked me through the company's mobile strategy , and in two weeks, Yahoo will make a big splash at CTIA with Boerries kicking off CTIA with a keynote and separate press conference. Last spring, Yahoo keynoted at CTIA in Las Vegas, where it unveiled voice-enabled search for OneSearch. • Interview: Pelago's CEO Jeff Holden Maps Out Vision For Mobile Social Networks

Last week, I caught up with Jeff Holden , the CEO of Pelago , which is developing Whrrl , an application for mobile phones that lets people share opinions about events and restaurants and organize meet-ups with friends. Pelago has the distinction of being the first investment of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byer's iFund, which is dedicated to funding iPhone applications. It subsequently also raised funds from T-Mobile's investment arm, among others. But Holden, who is a former Amazon exec, is distinctive in his own right. From his office in downtown Seattle, where he was wearing cargo shorts and a polo shirt on a rainy day, he covers ground quickly, and makes whopping predictions. One is that Amazon ( NSDQ: AMZN ) will become a hardware company and the second is something he's banking on—that Apple's ( NSDQ: AAPL ) iPhone will evolve from a niche device to one that gains double-digit market share. When it comes to explaining his company's vision, he references scenes from sci-fi movies and uses made-up words and phrases, like "foot-streaming" and the "digital augmentation of the physical world." He addressed the challenges they faced with the first iPhone app, the new version; integration into Facebook and Twitter, and the carriers Whrrl will launch with soon. Holden summarizes his excitement by drawing parallels between Pelago and Amazon: "Whrrl makes people's lives a lot better. Amazon made their lives a lot better, too. I get charged about that." Here's a summary of our conversation: -- The iPhone app: The Whrrl application launched In July with the App store, but received hundreds of complaints on its landing page for not using GPS and not being able to zoom to find restaurants. Holden said it still was downloaded more than 100,000 times over the first few days, and that iPhone users have been more active and engaged than users on the Blackberry platforms. A new iPhone version launched in the last week solves...

  • Mobile Ads Will Be Worth $12 Billion By 2011; Carriers Must Work Hard To Get A Piece: Report

The worldwide mobile advertising market will be worth more than $12 billion by 2011, Gartner forecasts, but cautions that carriers must be careful if they want to get a piece of the pie, especially since well-established players such as Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ), Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ), Yahoo ( NSDQ: YHOO ), MySpace and Microsoft ( NSDQ: MSFT ) are all pursuing the mobile revenue opportunity as well. King-Yew Foong, a Gartner research director, said operators should take advantage of their position, and use SMS and MMS, email, mobile search, location-based services to deliver targeted advertising messages, while at the same time regulating spam and a user's privacy. The report also found that they have to convince advertisers and marketers of how they are different from the internet search giants such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, and other traditional advertising mediums, such as newspapers and TV. The report concludes that right now, carriers are not credible players, but they can successfully leverage their relationships with customers, knowledge of local markets, extensive customer databases, network control and multiple channel access. • U.S. Elections May Be Second Big Event For Mobile After The Olympics

Now that the 2008 Summer Olympics have come to a close, the mobile industry is looking for the next big news event that could drive traffic and create long-term users for the new medium in the U.S. And based on just a handful of events and announcements that have occurred within hours of the huge fireworks display at the closing ceremonies in Beijing, they have their hearts set on the U.S. presidential election. Based on early findings, it could be a good pair. The Pew Internet And American Life Project found that a record-breaking 46 percent of Americans have used the internet, email or text messaging to get news about the campaign. Here are some other indications that make the case: -- Barack Obama announces his running mate via text : As many of you may know, Obama said he'd announce his VP by sending a text message to his loyal followings. It did not end up working out exactly according to plan, with both traditional media outlets, like the LA Times and The NY Times breaking the news first that Joe Biden was going to be his running mate, but it was close. Read more about it in Matt Kapko's post . -- MediaFLO launches news channels : MediaFLO, which provides broadcast content to some phones on both AT&T ( NYSE: T ) and Verizon Wireless' ( NYSE: VZ ) networks, said it will be adding three new news channels in time for the elections and democratic and republican national conventions. The three additions are: CNBC, MSNBC and Fox News. We have more details here . -- Google launches mobile election site : Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ) said on its blog today that it has launched a a site at m.google.com/elections to allow people to stay up-to-date on the elections from their phone. At the site, users will have access to mobile search results from keywords "obama" and "mcCain" so you don't have to type in the info each time. • Australian Firm SMSpup Launches Ad Subsidized Mobile Phone Service

Australian telecom firm ComTel is making a brave move: it is launching SMSpup Mobile , a new prepaid MVNO service offering AU$130 of talk and text value for AU$29 per month but customers who agree to receive five SMS or e-mail ads per day will only be charged AU$10, a 65 percent discount. The MVNO runs on local Vodafone ( NYSE: VOD ) network, and follows ComTel's integration of its pre and post-paid MVNO businesses with Empowered Communications, a local permission-based e-marketing group that it acquired in October 2007 for AU$23.7 million. PCWorld AU : One of the catches of the new service for subscribers is that if they do not view 50 percent of the advertising messages they are sent, then SMSPup Mobile reserves the right to remove the discount. ComTel says its service is modeled on the Blyk service launched in the UK in late 2007...which itself is in an early stage and remains to be seen it these experiments pan out. • iPhone Round-Up: 3G Lawsuit; Yahoo Search; Russian Availability; LinkedIn And Other New Apps

-- 3G Lawsuit: A lawsuit has been filed against Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ), alleging that the iPhone 3G is defective. The plaintiff hopes the suit will become a class-action complaint, reports ArsTechnica . The story goes that Alabama resident Jessica Alena Smith filed the complaint this week, calling out the iPhone 3G's performance issues, "despite the claims made by Apple's aggressive marketing campaign." The plaintiff had problems with the iPhone's data connection, which seemed to only connected to the 3G network 25 percent of the time. She had problems with dropped calls, too. -- Yahoo ( NSDQ: YHOO ) Search for iPhone: A Yahoo developer writes on his blog this week that he has just finished the full Yahoo search for the iPhone's Safari browser. It includes SearchMonkey, Search Assist, shortcuts, and other features. The post details who was involved and how it even meant a developer spending his time in Paris, head-down in front of a computer. If you don't already know, Search Assist is the nifty technology that completes your queries before you've finished typing them; SearchMonkey modules will follow you from your desktop browser to your iPhone (but you have to be logged in to your account); and there's movie times, weather, local results, breaking news, Flickr photos, and other stuff. If you don't have an iPhone, they provided screenshots here . -- Russian Availability: Apple has agreed to let Mobile TeleSystems, Russia's largest mobile phone operator, sell iPhones in Russia and retail sales will begin in October, a source told Reuters . There's no word on how much the devices will cost, or if there will be any special circumstances. A spokeswoman for MTS declined to comment. Apple also declined to comment. -- New iPhone Apps: Several new apps said they were launching in the Apple App store, including San Francisco-based Stitcher , which creates a personalized news and talk radio application.
