  • Broadcom Wins Federal Injunction Against Qualcomm 3G Chips

A US district court judge has allowed Qualcomm to continue selling some chips whose designs infringe patents held by Broadcom until the end of January 2009, but has banned the sale of 3G WCDMA chips that infringe patents, reports Reuters . For the chips it can continue selling Qualcomm must pay Broadcom mandatory royalties, and can only sell EV-DO chips it was offering as of May 29 2007, and only to customers it had at that time. "U.S. District Judge James Selna ruled, however, that Qualcomm must immediately stop selling third-generation, or 3G, WCDMA cellular chips that infringe on the Broadcom patents." The various legal battles are complicated, but this seems to be an effective replacement to the ITC ban which was overturned in September . • E-Lead Mobile PC

Pocketables provided the specifications for the E-Lead Electronic NoahPad mobile pc and several bloggers have been discussing the system. I decided this morning my thoughts were not clear on the need for another Linux-based mobile pc and decided to think awhile about the product before posting a link. A Negative Before going further, I decided my thoughts were very negative. I enjoy Linux but choose to work in Windows Vista. I don't need a small Linux machine. Yes, Windows XP is an option but the hardware is not robust enough for Windows Vista. Windows Vista is vital to the future viability of any new mobile pc. In fact, I came to accept my negative thoughts are based on the premise the hardware being released is not forward thinking but atune to closet cleaning; How many more crappy slow processors are still in the closet? Once I accepted the negative thoughts were keeping me down, my mind slowly opened. Several interesting trends happened this year in mobile pcs - some are noteworthy. (1) New vendors introduced small mobile pcs this year. The more vendors releasing product provides options for the consumer. Additionally, new products reinforces the concepts. (2) Many vendors moved away from a slate only mobile pc. Some people are convinced a keyboard is required - but it is not if Vista is the OS. Additionally, the small keyboards released on several models are too small for fast typing. Interestingly, the argument continues that a keyboard is faster than the TIP - I doubt it. If a mobile pc is used while at a desk then use a docking station. (3) Screen sizes are getting smaller. Smaller might be nice for some people but I prefer at last a 7-inch screen. The best news is 2008 is only a few hours away and that means CES 2008 begins in a few short days. Hopefully, we'll see Some fantastic mobile pcs being introduced.

  • Sprint halts sales of LG Rumor amid firmware-wiping fears

Talk about getting off on the wrong foot. The Sprint Rumor , made by LG, has seen launch-delays and stock shortages since before it was even available to Joe-cellphone-shopper. Now, it seems that Sprint has hit another wall with the LG Rumor - leading the struggling carrier to halt sales of the uber-popular handset until the problem is fixed. The Sprint LG Rumor was apparently shipped with a less-than-finalized version of the firmware. Engineers use a special debug command that is built into the firmware’s boot-up process. Unfortunately, this debug mode was left intact and accessible by Joe-cellphone-shopper with a combination of key-presses during the startup process. Even more unfortunate is the fact that this debug mode causes the firmware to self-destruct and wipe itself clean from the phone’s onboard memory - requiring nothing short of a trip to the factory for repairs/reflashing. Sprint has stopped selling the LG Rumor until the problem can be fixed and applied to its stock of Sprint LG Rumor handsets. Current LG Rumor owners can expect an OTA (Over-The-Air) fix once Sprint and LG have plugged the hole in the current firmware. Sprint had better get and stay on top of this issue right quick. The LG Rumor has the potential to boost Sprint’s subscriber numbers, but only if they can keep the handset stocked and problem-free. Just don’t go pressing random keys while your Sprint LG Rumor is booting up, ‘kay? • Nokia N95 advertisement shows slightly tweaked design

The boys over at Engadget Mobile spotted this interesting advert on Yahoo! today. Like so many yuppy mid-lifers that have gone under the knife in search of vanity and youth, the Nokia N95 you see pictured here just looks a bit strange. It’s an N95, that much we’re sure of. But, take a look at the edges of the device - they look strangely beveled for some reason. Clicking on the ad takes you to Nokia’s USA Nokia N95 page, so we’re assuming the “8GB expandable memory” claim is referring to the microSD card slot. The Nokia N95 8GB NAM should be an all-black handset without a microSD card slot, so this ad is most likely referring to the already-launched Nokia N95-3. Sloppy advertising aside, what’s with the tweaked look of this Nokia N95-3? • Scrapbook: Scrap your old note-taking method

"In day-to-day life, there are all sorts of little bits of information that you might want to make note of for future reference. However, the sheer number of such notes could clutter up or clog a basic note-taking application such as "Memos" (which comes built into the Palm os device). If you were to make a note of 3 interesting tidbits per day, after 5 years, you would have almost 5,500 notes. Distributing these among the 15 categories that are available in Memos would result in an average of 365 notes per category – and there could easily be twice that many in some categories (and far fewer in other categories). Instinctively, users of Palm os devices know this and, as a result, probably don’t use Memos in this fashion."
