  • Mobile Messaging Provider Berggi Raises $9 Million Second Round

Spanish telecom Avanzit put in $8 million of a $9 million second round for Houston-based mobile messaging provider Berggi. The company specializes in smartphone-like apps for the non-smartphone set, which still means most handset users. The investment is part of a strategic partnership as Avanzit plans to expand its Navento unit outside Spain. Current VC investor Adara Ventures added $1 million to the round. The company raised $3 million in a first round led by Adara in late 2006 when its first product Berggimail soft launched; that product is free in the U.S. and operates on Sprint and AT&T. Berggi plans to introduce a "downloadable consumer portal for mobile messaging" in August. Release . (Via VentureBeat ) Related Start-up Round-up: Pitch TV; Berggi

  • iPhone 1.0.1 update out, kills all hacks

Apple has released a 1.0.1 software update for the iPhone to fix a number of security issues with the device. Be warned that the software update checks the validity of your phone's operating system, and if it detects a hack will put the phone in restore mode. In restore mode, it'll download the update and restore the firmware, but any modifications made through iFuntastic will be over-written. Also realize, all your settings go as well. Thusfar, we can't find any changes made to the core OS, but we'll keep looking.
  • iPhone Saga - Removing the Sim Card

OK, this past saturday, I removed my sim card from the iPhone and placed it into my Palm Treo 750. I made a post about why I chose to do this and 3 days later, a firmware update comes out. How Ironic. Anyhow, if you wondered how to remove the sim card from your Apple [...]

That’s according to the Independent, which may have recycled rumours from earlier this month that O2 had won the rights to partner with Apple for UK iPhone operations. • Mobile Email: Are We Getting The Message Yet

Two new pieces of research into mobile email reveal some interesting stats about the service, even if widespread use is still yet to come. AOL , in its annual "Email Addiction" survey, claims: -- that email use on portable devices has doubled since 2004, with the average user checking email around five times a day. -- 59 percent of people with portable email devices are using them to check email every time a new message arrives -- 43 percent of users keep their devices near them when they sleep to check for incoming messages. Separately, Gartner predicts that there will be 350 million business and consumer users with access to wireless email by 2010, equating to one-fifth of all email accounts. The analyst firm believes that increasing device interoperability, and messaging convergence (between, say, a PC and a mobile, and between IM and email) will mean that email will be much more common than other forms of mobile messaging. But as an article in VNUnet points out, around 114 million text messages are currently sent every day, so it may be quite some time until mobile email completely overtakes SMS.

  • Rumor: O2 appears to have clinched Apple iphone contract, again

In yet another round of “ Deal, or No Deal ” rumor regarding the UK launch of the Apple iPhone, it seems that O2 has secured the exclusive rights for UK distribution of the iPhone - again. Speculation has already pinned the UK iPhone carrier as O2, so we’re not too surprised by this report. Nic Fildes at The Independent writes, “O2 expects the launch of broadband and Apple’s iPhone to maintain its momentum during the second half of the year, after it outperformed the market over the past three month,” adding that “Peter Erskine, chief executive of O2, said: ‘We’re excited about this product and we certainly hope to be marketing it later in the year when it launches.’” When O2’s head honcho alludes to marketing the iPhone, the deal is most likely at least in the works. We’re going to put our money on O2 for now. As long as that wheel keeps spinning, we can still change our bet.
