  • Earnings: Gameloft Q1 Revenue Rises 54 Percent

Gameloft has reported its first quarter earnings for the three months ending March 31st. The mobile game company generated revenue of 22.7 million euros (US$30.9 million), a 54 percent increase year-on-year. As a result Gameloft has finetuned its annual sales forecast to 95-100 million euros (US$130-136 million)—it had previously estimated between 90-100 million euros. On a comparable consolidation and exchange rate basis, growth would have reached 66 percent. Europe accounted for 44 percent of Gamelofts sales in the first quarter, and North America accounted for 39 percent. Gameloft said the sharp increase in sales is due to both its back catalogue (supported by the fact that the company released 45 games in 2006 compared to just over 20 in 2005) and the immediate success of games launched in the first quarter of 2007 (Desperate Housewives, Lost, sports licenses and so on). • Is Your Mobile Phone Driving Away the Bees?

It didn’t sound like a very techie story when it first made the news last week in the United States: bees are disappearing throughout the country, seemingly abandoning their colonies. OK, this might not seem like such a big deal either, but keep in mind that most of the world’s crops depend on pollination by [...]
  • Social Networking Moving To Mobile, With Teething Troubles

Social networking, becoming even more immediate and ubiquitous, is jumping onto mobile phones where it becomes even more immediate—but there are issues that have to be sorted out. The New York Times has a piece on the phenomenon, covering just a couple of the companies in the space, both of which raise issues that don’t apply to computers. Kyte.TV allows people to update an online “channel” with video from their cameraphone, and get instant feedback on the posts. The example given in the story is “Mr. Zai, a 37-year-old Swiss engineer, used his mobile phone to send out constant updates and images from his safari for an online audience”, and the article finishes with: “Of course, there is such a thing as being too in touch. Mr. Zai was disconcerted by the instant feedback to his safari photos that popped up on his phone..."Getting all kinds of communication in such a remote place is a bit confusing,” he said. “I kept responding, ‘I don’t really have the time to talk to you now. I have to make photos of these elephants’.” There was no mention made of what measures he had taken to avoid being bankrupted by roaming charges—there are ways, such as getting a local SIM, which doesn’t work if your handset is locked. The article also talks about the latest “Next Big Thing”, Twitter, which lets users update what they’re doing instantly and send SMS alerts based on that to others who have signed up. The Mobile Weblog has a post on Twitter suspending its SMS service in Australia citing high operating costs, in what we are assured is a “short term solution”. The issue is that in Australia (indeed, in many countries) the sender of an SMS pays the entire amount—so offering free SMS at that level of communication is infeasible. The problem is converting a service design for the PC web to mobiles. While the internet is mostly commoditized—if you connect to it that’s pretty much all you have to worry about, except for some speed issues in some places—each “mobile net” is still run by...

  • European Union tries, fails to agree on roaming rates

Filed under: Misc For a good percentage of chatters in these parts, roaming is very rarely a concern; modern rate plans have been constructed in such a way that even if you are roaming from time to time, you don't notice -- not even when your bill arrives. For Europeans, though, you can imagine that roaming might suck, seeing how you've got all those countries in pretty tight quarters. The European Union met recently in an effort to agree on caps for international roaming rates (and whether consumers should automatically be moved to the new pricing structures), but -- surprise, surprise -- representatives came away empty-handed. At issue seems to be the fact that the European Parliament wants rates capped at 40 euro cents (about $0.54) per minute for making calls and 15 euro cents (about $0.20) for receiving them, while constituent nations are gunning for something a little higher. Carriers, naturally, don't want hard caps at all, citing the stifling effect they'll allegedly have on infrastructure development, but at any rate, the EU's getting back together on May 2 to have another go at the negotiations. Good luck, guys! [Via textually.org ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

  • Amosu coats Sony Ericsson W880i in 24 karats of happiness

Filed under: Culture , Handsets , Sony Ericsson , GSM , GPRS , UMTS If you find the thickness of a Vertu positively offensive -- but the Sony Ericsson W880i isn't quite exclusive enough for you -- might we recommend a golden rendition of the same? A phone customization outfit, Amosu, is offering said golden W880i for a mere £569 (about $1135). The catch? Turns out the handset is merely plated in the precious stuff, which means you're really not getting a heck of a lot of gold for the surcharge. Finding a yellow Ai any other way is gonna be a challenge, though, so spend the dinero if you must. [Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog and E24.se ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
