  • Download Origami Experience and passing of the torch

Hi all, I'm happy to announce that Origami Experience has been published to the download center for UMPC users who install or upgrade to Windows Vista. If you don't know what Origami Experience is, read some of the previous blogs and check out the video demo we have. So, when you are all ready, click on the link below to download the Origami Experience Pack. It includes Origami Experience, Sudoku, and Windows Vista Touch Settings. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AC349E84-C109-4AE7-A973-411C1DE2457F&displaylang=en Note that DialKeys is not included in the download version. DialKeys is only available pre-installed on new UMPCs so if you wipe your UMPC or upgrade to Windows Vista, DialKeys will be unavailable. Keep an eye out on the Download Center ( http://microsoft.com/downloads ) for the international versions of the Origami Experience Pack later this week. Ink Desktop and Experience Pack for Windows Vista will be published this week as well. Finally, MS Reader - Optimized for Origami will go live later in February. I was personally amazed at how great of a reading device UMPCs really became once a good software implementation was created. On a completely seperate note, I wanted to formally announce that my entire team and I (with the exception of Jeremy) have been asked to move off of UMPC and go to work on a new secret project. The new Product Unit Manager (PUM) for UMPC at Microsoft will be Oscar Koenders. Moving forward you can expect to see some new faces from Microsoft blogging and responding to forum posts, but I'm sure Sears, Emily, myself and the rest of the team will still be checking in from time to time. Launching this site has been a lot of fun for me. I had the vision to create a community site for UMPC enthusiasts and new users alike to meet other people and to have a direct communication with the software engineering team as Microsoft. The team and I have learned a ton from running this site and have really enjoyed...
  • .Net Compact Framework Application and Library Catalog Updated

I've posted an updated .NET Compact Framework catalog to the internet. The catalog has outgrown the capabilities of our blog editor so it's now posted as a stand alone web page that will be updated periodically. When it's updated, I'll post another entry here, to the team blog. This update includes a number of applications that we learned about thanks to a paragraph included in a recent http://www.Handango.com developer newsletter. Click on this link to see our application catalog . The catalog contains applications that I find out about through web searches and emails from developers. We're always looking for applications and libraries to add to our catalog. Applications and libraries we discover are used for posting updates to our team blog (you are here!) to show what types of applications are being built with .NET Compact Framework. This page gets thousands of visits monthly, so having your app listed here can be an effective supplemental means of publicizing your application and company. candidates for basic compatibility testing with new versions of the .NET Compact Framework under development. This helps us do our best to ensure that existing applications – like yours – continue to work well with new versions of the .NET Compact Framework. If your application isn't on the list, I'd love to include it if you send an email to cfapp@microsoft.com (include name of application, which platforms it targets, required version of NETCF and URL). If you need product support, please use the MSDN Feedback Center as this will ensure your issue gets into our databases where we can respond to it and track it. • Yahoo!-keitai replaces Vodafone-Live!

SoftBank replaced Vodafone-Live! by Yahoo!-Keitai. SoftBank phones have a "Y!"-button which links to Yahoo!-keitai. Yahoo-Keitai! offers a list of official sites, new services (e.g. a new communicator service), and also access to free mobile internet sites through the YAHOO directory, as well as access to YAHOO services, such as YAHOO-auctions. YAHOO!-keitai is a fresh start to revive the mobile internet service, previously known as Vodafone-Live!, and which had been losing market share to competitors i-Mode and EZweb for about 4 years. Previous to the Vodafone-Live! period, Jsky had been successful in gaining market share both from i-Mode and EZweb. Read more in our "Softbank-Report"

  • Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in Japan

Mobile number portability created winners and losers in only two months - the main business challenge for Japanese operators is to avoid a price war. KDDI is the clear winner in the first round, DoCoMo suffers a setback, and SoftBank did better than expected. Today we released the 23rd edition of our JCOMM-Report - about 250 pages of overview and analysis of Japan's telecom sector. KDDI gains 524,000 subscribers in Oct & Nov 2006. DoCoMo for the first time ever since it was founded experienced a net loss of subscriptions. KDDI gains 600,000 new EZweb subscribers, Japanese operators earn much from mobile internet - subscription data show even better results for KDDI 's EZweb.

About 100 investors and investment bank analysts were invited to attend. I was given the opportunity to share the lunch table with CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg and had a fascinating discussion. Recently Ericsson won major contracts from SoftBank and eAccess/eMobile.
