  • BlogMailr

This post originated as an email. BlogMailr is in beta and provides a blogger access to their blog simply by sending an email. Work on the UMPC Buzz main site design continues. There are a few ideas for making the site look unique again. However, there are challenges to keeping the site content unique and not simply a repeat of news or opinions found on other sites. The link to the new forums is now complete. I have not finished synchronizing the blog posts with the forums but hopefully that will be completed soon. This will make commenting easier.
  • The Midas touch

Lora and I have been talking about the best way to use the touch screen on the UMPC. My initial attempts failed and Lora pointed out that the best results occur, by using the back of the finger and not the front. front: not sensitive back: much better response Another angle Conclusion : For best results, use the back of your finger. if the area is small or in a corner, you may also tilt the finger to an angle for the nail to have a smaller surface area. Hope this helps others achieve a better feel for the UMPC.
  • Setting up a new ASUS R2H UMPC

After spending the last 48 hours setting up an ASUS R2H UMPC, I am finally able to surf the web and write blog posts. The Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system was installed when the system was first turned on. The system was not connected to the Internet during the installation, however, there were 47 updates to be installed before being able to use the mobile pc on the web. In addition, .Net 2.0 and several dlls were installed. Plus, Live writer was installed. I did not remove any software but decided the screen rotation was not worthwhile because the spacing was not right. I will stick with 800x480 so that I can read the screen. I will also stick with the TIP and stylus rather than Dial keys and touch. The ink experience is very smooth. I made a dramatic mistake at the beginning of using the UMPC by leaving the ASUS site as the default. After launching the IE 7.0 browser, the site would take 15 minutes to load and allow the TIP to put in a new domain. I almost gave up and was cursing the UMPC for the slow performance. The key to success involved removing the ASUS website as the home page. Simply changing the default allowed a fast and normal browsing experience. I do not know why this default site caused a problem but this was a major problem solved. Party time ! -- Layne P. Heiny
  • Happy Birthday Frank

I apologize for the lateness! Frank's birthday was yesterday and he celebrated last night. Happy Birthday and the Heiny family wishes you many more birthdays.

  • UMPC Stories Flourish in 2006

A google search with the term UMPC returns over 7.67 million webpages representing a 7 fold increase over a search for Intel Apples . Both stories were worthy of the 2006 tech year but the interest in the Origami PCs far exceeded interest in Apple using an Intel. Why do you think this is true? People are ready for mobile systems. They do not want to be locked down to a desktop PC. Instead, they want to take their information with them. In fact, the UMPC is so popular that the 2006 in review story from What PC? lists the UMPC systems in the headline. • Sharing the ASUS UMPC Love

Dennis O'Reilly is enjoying the ASUS R2H . The jam-packed Asus device's connectivity and security are hard to beat. The R2H has 802.11g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless built in (the Samsung Q1B comes with only 802.11g Wi-Fi), and USB 2.0 ports are located on either side and on the top of the device. I agree that the ASUS feature list is more than many PCs on the market. After installing the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition on a new ASUS, the amount of software loaded by default was surprising.
  • Vistagami? What the heck is that?

Lately I've been seeing more and more articles appearing in the press about " Vistagami ", but these references generally misrepresent what it actually is. First let me say that Vistagami is just an internal code name my team came up with to name the Windows Vista version of Origami. More precisely, it is the internal code name of the next version of the Touch Pack. What is included, what it will be named and how it is different from the XP version, etc. has not been disclosed yet. Vistagami isn't intended to represent any new UMPC hardware, or improvements on things such as battery life, lower prices, etc. That's not to say these issues aren't being worked on by OEMs, it's just not part of Vistagami. Rebember that Microsoft as a provider of software to OEMs actually has little control over the actual hardware designs, specs and prices of UMPCs that actually come to market. We of course meet with OEMs often, give them feedback on their designs, recommend performance targets, hardware specifications, etc. but in the end a manufacturer has the final say on what they deliver to the market. So, what is Vistagami? I can only say you'll find out in January. Thanks, Dustin
  • Free Notebooks but Not UMPCs

Long Zheng writes that several bloggers were lucky to receive a Christmas present from Microsoft . No, I did not receive a notebook, nor the Vista marketing package that Loren and Lora received . I am not terribly upset by this action because I am holding out for a free UMPC. Uhm. Anyone? Actually, the gifts from Microsoft are a great way to produce some product buzz. They might consider free Windows Vista shirts, jackets, socks, and shoes because I need a new wardrobe. Also, a nice new UMPC with Windows Vista preloaded would be wonderful gift I could use to blog and blog and blog about the platform. Oh, guess they figure I will do that anyway .. LOL.
